Matter Notes

Matter• Anything that has

mass and takes up space.

• Five States of Matter– Solid, Liquid, Gas,

Plasma, – Bose Einstein

Condensate

Atoms

• Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter that make up everyday objects. A desk, the air, even you are made up of atoms!

• There are 90 naturally occurring kinds of atoms. Scientists in labs have been able to make about 25 more.

Law of Conservation of Matter

•Matter can not be created or destroyed, it only changes form

Law of Conservation Demo• Pour about 50 mL vinegar into Flask• Using Funnel – Place three spoonfuls of

baking soda in the balloon• Carefully Place balloon over the spout of

Flask making sure the baking soda does not fall out.

• One balloon is secure Flask person should hold bottom of balloon and allow baking soda to drop into the Flask.

• Write observations and describe what happened to the matter.

Properties

Physical Properties an observation you

can make without changing the

substance into something new.

– Size, shape, density, melting

point, boiling point, state of matter

Chemical Properties an

observation that alters (changes) the substances into something

new.– Flammability and

reactions to other substances

Changes• Physical

• A change that will not turn the molecules into something new.

• Tearing, changing states of matter, separating

• Chemical

• A change that will turn the molecules into something new.

• Burning, Rusting, Reacting.

• Usually involves releasing a gas or changing color
