Fillintheform.MakesuretouseyourofficialOleMissemailaddress(ie,onethatendsin@olemiss.edu).Infield3,selectyourcomputer’soperatingsystemfromthepulldown.Whenfinished,clickSubmit.Youshouldseeascreenlikethis.Youwillbedirectedtoapagethatlookslikethis:

ClickContinuetoyourWolframUserPortal.Youwillthenseeascreenthatasksyouforlogininformation.

AtthispointyouneedtoopenyoucampusemailandlookforanemailfromWolfram.3.Todownloadyoursoftware,openyouremailInboxinanewwindow.YouwillhaveamessagefromWolframthatlooks(roughly)likethis:

NowyoumustCreateanAccountbyclickingtheredbuttoninthelowerleftcornerofthescreen4.Nowyoushouldbelookingatthisscreen:

FillinallfieldsandthenclicktheCreateAccountbutton

ClickOKtodismissthepopup.You’renowreadytoregisteranddownloadtheproduct.FillinallthefieldsandclicktheFinishbutton.

AtthispointyouclickOKtodismissthepopup.5.TodownloadMathematica8,scrolldownandclicktheDownloadbutton:

Youwillbeaskedifyouwanttosavethediskimage:

ClickSaveFile.

Chooseaplace(weusuallyusetheDesktop)tosavethefile.ClickSavetostartthedownload.Thedownloadwilltakealongtime,withthefamiliarprogressbar:

Whenthedownloadiscomplete,diskimagewillappearonthedesktop.

6.Installtheprogrambydouble‐clickingthedownloadedfile.Yourcomputerwilltakeamomenttoanalyzethedownloadedfile.

Whenthathasfinished,thediskimagewillappearasamounteddiskonthedesktopandshouldopeninanewFinderwindow:

(IfitdidnotopeninaFinderwindow,youcanopenitbydoubleclickingthemounteddisk.)Toinstalltheprogram,draganddroptheMathematicaiconintotheApplicationsfolder.IfyouareinstallingMathematica8onacomputerthathasapreviousversionofMathematicainstalled,youwillbeaskedifyouwanttoreplacetheoldversion:

Asfarasweareaware,Mathematica8isfullybackward‐compatiblewitholderMathematicafiles;so,thereshouldbenoneedtomaintainseparateversionsofMathematicaonasinglemachine.ClickReplacetocontinuetheinstallation.WaitwhiletheInstallercopiesfiles.

ClickFinishtocompletetheinstallation.7.StartMathematica8fromtheApplicationsFolder:

YourcomputerwillcautionyouaboutrunningarpogramyoudownloadedfromtheInternet.

ClickOpentocontinue.You’llbepromptedforanActivationKey.FinditintheUserportal:

TypeinyourActivationKeyandclickActivate.You’llbepromptedtoreadandaccepttheEndUserLicenseAgreement.Readit,checkthebox,andclickOK.

Atthispointtheprogramwillstart.

Thisactivationonlyhastobedoneonce;fromnowon,youcanstarttheprogramfromtheApplicationsfolderanduseitdirectly.Note:oncetheprogramhasbeeninstalled,thediskimageyoudownloadedtothedesktopisnolongerneededandcanbedeleted.Happycomputing!
