Math Literacy Module

The Alabama Quality Teaching Standards (AQTS) require that prospective teachers exhibit proficiency in the following areas of math literacy

1. Knowledge of the role that mathematics plays in everyday life

2. The ability to communicate with others about mathematical concepts, processes, and symbols

3. Knowledge of the concepts and relationships in number systems

4. Knowledge in the appropriate use of various types of reasoning

5. Knowledge of metric and customary measurement and fundamental geometric concepts

6. The ability to solve problems using different strategies

Think of ways you have used math today:

• What’s the latest time I can get up and still get to work or school on time?

• Do I have enough change to purchase a newspaper?

• Check the temperature – do I need a jacket?

• How much over the speed limit am I driving?

• Task for Standard 1 and 2

Find two lesson plans in your content area in which math

is an integral part of the lesson. Write a paragraph about

each lesson plan explaining what math is involved in the

lesson, and why that math is important in everyday life.

Submit lesson plans and paragraphs to your instructor.

There is another set of numbers known as

imaginary numbers. Imaginary numbers were

conceived in response to the question of whether

or not we could think about the square root of

negative numbers, like √-81

√-81 is imaginary because there is no number

that can be multiplied by itself and result in a

negative product ( 9 x 9 = +81 and -9 x -9 = +81,

there’s no way to get -81 by squaring a number)

• i is used to represent √-1

– This is how we write imaginary numbers:

√-49 = 7i

√-100 = 10i

√-25 = 5i
