riverbedPROJECT: housing megastructure in dried channel of zayandeh river
LOCATION: esfahan, iran
YEAR: 2015
TUTOR: jan kubec, arch. PhD
RIVERBED project attempts to solve the problem of dried channel of Zayandeh river in the heart of Esfahan. Proposed concept is a river’s metaphor, vast structure which combines with the place’s spirit and urban context. Hipothetical return of the river in the future is a core concept of this design and the reason of tripartite division. This solution allows portioning the future river flow into three channels on different levels of the structure, achieving the weave, urban-nature symbiosis. Ground level consists of housing development, so important for the growing city; upper part serves as a green cover and public park, connecting two sides of the river; while underground level is a place for parking lots. Channels on three levels have separate functions, which don’t depend on the presence of the river. Project combines traditional vernacular techniques and materials with the latest achievements in green technologies to create new, alternative icon for the city.

photosyntesisPROJECT: housing high-rise with photobioreactive shell
LOCATION: durban, rsa
YEAR: 2015
cooperation: magdalena halat, arch. msc
PHOTOSYNTESIS project is the answer to the growing problem of pollution in Durban. Located on the crossroad of two main city avenues it has to deal with enormous amount of fumes and noise. However the point of this project was not only to isolate the inhabitants from the harmful environment, but also to take part in the regenerative process. Photobioreactive net surrounding the building utilises algeas to produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. Natural algaes’ process of photosynthesis is extremely efficient, while very quick growth makes them a great source of biomass, which can be used as a fuel later on. System requires a large volume of water for the microorganisms to grow, so a recovery system is necessary. It is located on the roof of the ground floor, where grass and canes naturally filter the water, which after additional chemical treatment can return to the loop. Building’s construction is made entirely out of mass timber panels, which are high sustainable materials. Timber panels are cheap, durable, easy to build with and surprisingly more resistant during fire than steel, which makes them a great, new material of the future.

hospital maktubPROJECT: bone-marrow transplant center in nino jesus pediatric hospital
LOCATION: madrid, spain
YEAR: 2012
architects: elisa valero, arch. phd, leonardo tapiz buzarra, arch. phd
The goal of this project (finished in Febraury 2013) was to furnish old hospital department with the finest installations and technology for bone-marrow transplants. Besides the projects technical aspects, it has the added goal of softening, as much as possible, the sense of isolation to which immunosuppressed children are subjected to, so that the quality of the space makes their stay and that of their families more pleasant. The unit has six boxes, all located on the south side of the wing, facing the glass-walled gallery for family visits. Service areas are located between that gallery and the rooms in boxes of different sizes. Simplicity, comfort, colours, avoiding the “hospital atmosphere” were the most important design guidelines of the project.Author joined the project in the final stage of drawings’ preparation and was responsible for drawing the elevations, correcting ventilation and electrical systems, creating 3D visualisations and making the physical model with the rest of the team (photos above).

SPORT FACTORYPROJECT: Industrial hall’s adaptation for sport & leisure centre
LOCATION: Nysa, Poland
YEAR: 2013
TUTOR: Teresa Adamczyk, arch. PhD
Historic industrial hall from the beginning of the 20th century has been left unused for several years, making it a perfect revitalisation subject, given the central location in the city. Hall has been expanded with new, diagonal nave which swiftly merges with the building structure and uses maximum space of the unusually shaped plot. Triangular space between the old and the new building creates quiet courtyard for the visitors, effectively isolating them from the noisy surroundings.Functionwise, object has been divided into two areas - sport in the old hall and entertainment in the expansion. Basilic shape was used to create ‘sport gallery’ - after leaving the dressing room on the first floor, visitors can observe all the available activities from above and pick the one they like. Expansion part, with separate entrance, includes cafeteria and rentable space for small events on the ground floor, and gaming area on the first floor. Project also includes children area, located between the old and the new part, therefore available for the visitors of both areas.

exhibitition hallPROJECT: exhibition hall for academic campus of silesian university of technology
LOCATION: gliwice, Poland
YEAR: 2014
TUTOR: marek wenklar, arch. msc
Exhibition hall is strategically located at the end of the main pedestrian axis of Silesian University of Technology. The plot is also very close to the regional highway, ensuring easy access to the visitors with cars. Project concept is the direct result of analysing possible pedestrian and cars movement, creating dynamic form, which properly closes the spacial axis. Wide ‘cuts’ in the building create entrance square in the front, suitable for exterior exhibitions and smaller square on the back of the building, opened into the park. Interior is clearly divided into three sections - main exhibition area, cafeteria and services, like conference room and administration offices. The visual aspect of the building is based on the exposed steel construction made of red trusses, which are visible from the outside through vast glass facade.

niwka reshapedPROJECT: urban masterplan for new center of niwka-modrzejów district
LOCATION: sosnowiec, Poland
YEAR: 2014
TUTOR: jerzy pocisk-dobrowolski, arch. msc
Project plot is one of many examples of postindustrial areas in the Upper Silesia region which used to be full of factories and mines in the previous century, but now what is left, is just a vast unused land surrounded with densely populated multi-level housing. The core concept of the project is to connect the neighbourhoods located on both sides of the plot, invite new citizens and create rich, mixed-use living environment. Layout of the urban plan refers to unexisting historic axis. All the public and commercial buildings are located along the irregular stream of walkways and squares, which ends in the park leading into the existing forest. Housing quarters are divided into three types of density and height and are located depending on the proximity of the central stream (the closer the denser).Technology park and commercial buildings provide work places attracting new, educated citizens to the area, resulting in higher land value and further development of the entire area, also beyond the project boundaries.

wieluński squarePROJECT: revitalisation concept for historical wieluński square
LOCATION: częstochowa, Poland
YEAR: 2014
TUTOR: marek janik, arch. phd
cooperation: michał wołek, arch. msc; SZYMON HELICKI, ARCH. MSC
Wielunski Square is a place of rich history and tradition, currently sadly exploited by chaotic transportation and parking lots. Purpose of the projects was pto repare the complex social, economical and spatial programme of revitalisation. Spatial aspect of the project is focused on ‘fixing’ the frontages of the square by proposing multi-purpose building, which provides closure and new proportions. Long, rectangular area is divided into three parts with increasing greenery percentage and enriched with mobile pavilions which can be used by street performers, food vendors, shopkeepers or as a bike rental.
Project was a part of cooperation with Municipal Urban Planning Agency in Czestochowa and was presented during two-stage public plenary and consulated with the inhabitants of the area.

urban springPROJECT: multifunctional city bus stop
LOCATION: gliwice, Poland
YEAR: 2014
TUTOR: janusz poznański, arch. msc
COOPERATION: MICHAŁ WOŁEK, arch. msc
Urban spring is a small-scale pavilion easily adjustable to the current needs of the city. Modular construction and placement flexibility makes it an ideal replecament for incoherent kiosks, bus stops and public toilets. Spring can be created using any amount of modules divided into three types. Module A is designed for street vendors, selling vegetables, breads, newspapers or flowers and provides them with small storage and sanitary area. Module B can be used as a public transporatation stop with lots of different sitting spots. Finally, module C is a public toilet combined with advertising space.Modules are made of prefabricated elements supported with curved steel construction, which is easy to transport and arrange on site. Dynamic spring form grants the object visibility and landmark effect.
