PMU-Based Design of Power System Stabilizers in

Electric Power Systems

Officious disturbances in power systems cause large oscillations and

consequently losing system stability which justifies the necessity of using Power

System Stabilizers (PSS). Using Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) in designing

PSS, is a solution to increase observability in previous monitoring systems.

Global PSSs receive signals produced by PMUs which are installed on the buses

of power plant.

In this report preliminary actions of designing global stabilizers were provided

by designing local PSSs and surveing Sequential Orthogonalization and Modal

Analysis methods of Input/Output selection. But since the number of selected

Inputs and Outputs derived by these methods, and consequently the number of

needed control devices to realize the purpose of network's observability and

damping, was too much and also the results illustrates the demand for

improvement of response qualities, an algorithm was suggested to resolve the

mentioned problems.

Suggested algorithm is based on reducing the number of I/O candidates by using

a combination of Bus/Generator Clustering with ICA, besides utilization of PCA

technique and finally Modal analysis.

And eventually the design of global Power System Stabilizers was performed by

using PMU data, optimized I/O selected by the suggested method, GA

optimization method, and LMIs.
