I have a bias:

“If you only have a hammer in your toolbox, all you see is a nail.”

TRUE, however, having a tool in your toolbox doesn’t tell you WHEN and HOW to use them and toward what goal.

“Toolbox” approaches are practitioner-centered.

“To me, a toolbox or ‘eclectic’ concept is a disorganized approach centered around applying different tools or products without consistent reasoning process or thinking model behind them oftentimes starting with preferred methods first then working downward.” – Jason Silvernail

What is DNS?

“DNS is a new and unique rehabilitation strategy based on the principles of developmental kinesiology and the

neurophysiological aspects of maturing locomotor system.”

Developmental Kinesiology

Developmental Kinesiology

DNS Principles

Regulation of IAP (Intra-abdominal pressure) in isolated movements & global movements.

Functional joint centration

Integration of multi-sensory influences on movement.

Levels of Motor Control

Quick recap….

1. Spinal & Brain Stem Level (0-6 weeks) Primitive reflexes present

2. Subcortical Level (~12 months) Initiation and implementation of ipsilateral and contralateral patterns.

3. Cortical Level

Sagittal Stabilization

- Proceeds ANY movement

- Initiated by diaphragm contraction

- Followed by eccentric abdominal activity and isometric pelvic floor activity.

*Important Functions of the diaphragm.

1. Respiration

2. Postural

3. Sphincter, will not be assessed today

Start with Breathing

DNS Assessment

DNS Assessments

“Any movement can become an assessment; any assessment can become an exercise.”

DNS in Sport

The best sport performance requites maximal loading.

Functional Capacity = The point at which a person is no longer able to maintain ideal locomotion strategies due to the magnitude of the ‘strain’ on the movement system.

Load Strain

Fatigue Strain

When the duration of the movement exceeds the athlete’s capacity to main proper movement strategies; not enough “endurance”.

Speed Strain

When the athlete’s joint motion speed exceeds the athlete’s capacity to maintain proper Movement strategies.

Quick Thought

*Any exercise becomes a “DNS exercise” if the principles are maintained. No movement is off-limits = Only limited by your own creativity.

And even with family…
