Executive Summary
BI, Analytics, DW and Big Data is a booming market. In particular Big Data and the analysis of it, is becoming increasingly important to organisational decision making as technology records more and more ecommerce and behavioural data. However organisations no longer want just reporting, they want insights on data to forecast and predict future demand.
In particular, the next 12 months will see advanced analytics become more ingrained in the Australian business landscape. The financial services, retail and telecommunications sectors are expected to activate analytics projects they have been planning for some time. Those industries with the wheels of advanced analytics already in motion, including utilities and large media companies, will begin putting strategies in place for future activity. Australia’s mid-market i.e. banking & finance and retail will continue to mature in their business intelligence capabilities, but are likely to remain further behind the industry leaders in terms of analytics. The importance of information as a corporate asset is growing exponentially with the need to leverage accurate insights to counter threats from new competitors.
Key skills shortages look likely to be in the decision science area. The Australian financial services, retail and telecommunications industries are comparatively advanced, with large companies already developing and implementing strategies to gain a competitive advantage. Customer micro targeting is becoming particularly common in these industries, with organisations using
data on specific customer history and wider demographics to determine likely buying patterns, behaviours and additional sales opportunities. Consequently there are significant skills shortages for people with predictive and propensity modelling skills (PHD maths/statistics level backgrounds) and those that can interpret data and provide insight to the business in a non-technical manner.
Rates look likely to increase for those with both technical and business facing skills as these candidates remain in short supply. The survey found that 12% had received an increase of more than 15% of their salary in the past year and two thirds had received a salary review in the past year – the highest of all the sectors surveyed.
Unsurprisingly, job seekers within the BI and DW space are looking to advance their skills in Big Data with 77% stating this was their focus area for development.
Over half (59%) of these jobseekers are intending to change jobs in the next 12 months. Flexible working is the most valued benefit within this sector; those employers who offer this will have a competitive advantage in what will be a tight candidate market over the next 12 months.
