Giving as dutyMind the gap!

Mind the gap between what you do

and why you do it.

How can we keep our thoughts and actions pure and pleasing to God?

Mark 7:1-23This passage shows two ways to keep

the thoughts and the actions pure.

I. We can keep the thoughts and actions pure by obeying the Scripture (1-13).

Mark 7:5-8

5 The Pharisees and scribes asked, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the traditions of the elders, but eat with impure hands?”

Mark 7: 5-8 (cont)

6 And he said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:‘This people honors me with their lips, but

their heart is far away from me.7 ‘But in vain do they worship me, teaching as

doctrines the precepts of man.” 8 Neglecting the commandments of God, you

hold to the traditions of men.”

I. We can keep the thoughts and actions pure by obeying the Scripture (1-13).

A. Wrong instructions lead to wrong acts.B. Right instructions guide us to right acts.

Bill Gates(Agnostic scientist)

“The specific elements of Christianity are not

something I'm a huge believer in. There's a lot of

merit in the moral aspects of religion. I think it can have a very, very positive impact.”

Right instructions lead to right actions

I. We can keep the thoughts and actions pure by obeying the Scripture (1-13).

II. We can keep the heart pure by totally devoting it to God (14-23).

.

Mark 7:15-23

15 There is nothing outside of man which can defile him if it goes into him…20 That which proceeds out of man, that is what defiles him.

Mark 7:15-23 (cont)

21For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, 22deeds of coveting and wickedness, as

well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. 23All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.

I. We can keep the thoughts and actions pure by obeying the Scripture (1-13).

II. We can keep the heart pure by totally devoting it to God (v14-23).

A. A misplaced heart leads to all kinds of evil.

Duty is heavy.

I. We can keep the thoughts and actions pure by obeying the Scripture (1-13).

II. We can keep the heart pure by totally devoting it to God (14-23).

A. Misplaced heart leads to all kinds of evil.B. We must devote our heart to God.

Mind the gap!

It is for your own safety.

Conclusion

1. We can keep our thoughts and actions pure by obeying the Scripture out of a totally devoted heart to God.

2. Purity comes from obeying the Scripture out of a totally devoted heart to God .

Apps1. Rejoice in the lordship of Christ over your life.2. Surrendering your heart to him.3. Delight in following and obeying him.
