Archdiocese of GalvestonHouston Prayer
in the Time of the Coronavirus

Comfort us, O Lord, for we are like
your disciples on the storm tossed seas,
unsettled by what lies ahead.
We turn to You, our Healer and Guide,
to still our hearts in our time of need and
hear our prayer: Heal those who are sick
with the coronavirus and protect the elderly
and most vulnerable. Give strength to all who
tend to our health and wisdom to researchers
who work toward a cure. Open our eyes
and hearts, as you did during Hurricane Harvey,
that we may look beyond our immediate needs to care for
others who need help.
Through the Holy Spirit, guide our leaders to make wise
decisions for the welfare of all the people
they serve. Grant eternal rest to those who
have died from the virus. May Mary,
Our Mother, who has heard our pleas in
the storms of our lives, intercede to her Son,
that we may find healing and a prompt end to this illness.
Mary, Star of the Sea, pray for us.
Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior, heal us. Amen

From Pope Francis:

Tonight before falling asleep
think about when we will return to the street.

When we hug again,
when all the shopping together will seem like a party.

Let's think about when the coffees will return to the
bar, the small talk, the photos close to each other.

We think about when it will be all a memory but nor-
mality will seem an unexpected and beautiful gift.

We will love everything that has so far seemed futile
to us. Every second will be precious.

Swims at the sea, the sun until late, sunsets, toasts,
laughter. We will go back to laughing together.

Strength and courage.
Spiritual Act of Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most
Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I
desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at
this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least
spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were
already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never
permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

During these difficult times, men need spiritual
sustenance more, not less: “Man does not live by bread
alone, but by every word that falls from the mouth of
God” (Matthew 4:4).

As such, many of our men our friends and neighbors
are not able to receive the spiritual sustenance they need
and have traditionally found through That Man is You!

To continue to serve the Men of Mary Queen, we will
continue to meet on Wednesday mornings from 5:45
7:00 AM for the TMIY sessions "virtually". Obviously, this
can never fully replace inperson meetings, but it can
provide the spiritual sustenance needed when we don't
have other options.

I know that the coronavirus is placing increasing
demands on all of us. Let us trust that God's grace will
always be sufficient: "God ... will not let you be tempted
beyond your strength" (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Lenten Alms Giving Charity is a frequent and
important theme of the Gospels. As individual members
of Mary Queen, each of us is called to focus more
closely on almsgiving during Lent. Almsgiving is the
outward action of donating money or goods to the poor
as a reflection of your love for Jesus. This year during
Lent we are asking every person/family to donate the
following items to our Food Pantry.

It is better to give alms than to store up gold; for
almsgiving saves one from death and expiates every sin.
Those who regularly give alms shall enjoy a full life" (Tob
12:8 9).

The Food Pantry at Mary Queen is still open our
regular hours (Monday Friday, 10:00 AM 2:00 PM)
and regular boundaries (Zip Codes 77546, 77581,
77511).The only reason we would close would be if we
are told to by the Archdiocese or if we run out of
groceries. Normally, we order groceries from the
Galveston County Food Bank and from Kroger. The
Food Bank still has plenty of groceries but the selection
is limited. Kroger has told us that we cannot place an
order anytime soon. So, we are asking individuals to
donate groceries. Donations can be dropped off Monday
Friday, from 10:00 AM 2:00 PM at the back of the
Food Pantry.

We also gladly accept monetary donations. Eventually
we will be able to order groceries again and we are still
offering minimal help with utility bills. To make a textto

Divine Mercy Sunday
Jesus spoke the following to St. Faustina:
Encourage souls to say the Chaplet which I
have given you (1541)*. Whoever will recite
it will receive great mercy at the hour of
death (687)*. When they say this chaplet in
the presence of the dying, I will stand
between My Father and the dying person,
not as the just Judge but as the Merciful Savior (1541)*

At three o’clock, implore My Mercy, especially for sinners;
and, if only for a brief moment, immerse yourself in My
Passion, particularly in My abandonment at the moment of
agony. This is the hour of great mercy...In this hour I will
refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of Me in
virtue of My Passion (1320)*

The Divine Mercy Novena and Chaplet will begin on Good
Friday, April 10th, following the 3:00 PM Stations of the
Cross. The remaining eight days of the Novena, April 11th
18th, will be prayed at 3:00 PM in the St. Joseph
Chapel, including Easter Sunday.

On Divine Mercy Sunday, April 19th, at 3:00 PM there will
be a Holy Hour in the St. Joseph Chapel with Adoration,
Divine Mercy Prayers and Benediction. Fellowship will
follow in the main hall.

Death, Life, Love, Hope
(5
th
Sunday of Lent: Ezekiel 37:1214; Romans 8:811;
John 11:145)

Jesus was, in a way, testing Martha’s faith, when he said,
“I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in
me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and
believes in me will never die,” and then asked her, “Do
you believe this?”

If he had asked, “Do you understand this?” the
conversation might have take a different turn. But
Martha’s response expressed her faith in Jesus himself,
and thus in everything he said or did. “Yes, Lord. I have
come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God,
the one who is coming into the world.”

Later we read, “And Jesus wept. So the Jews said: See
how he loved him.” Love and tears are not strangers to
each other.

The Beautiful Lady wept. We can see, therefore, how she
loves us, and longs for us to believe that her Son is the
resurrection and the life, to trust in his word.

Every time I encounter the phrase ’my people’ in the
Bible, I think of La Salette. In today’s first reading, that
connection is especially strong. This passage concludes
the famous episode of the Valley of the Dry Bones. Until
now, in Ezekiel, God has spoken about his people, rarely
to them. But here he addresses them directly, and with
what feeling: “O my people!” Can they ever doubt his love
again?

The appropriate response to that question is found in
today’s Psalm: “If you, O Lord, mark iniquities, Lord, who
can stand? But with you is forgiveness that you may be
revered... For with the Lord is kindness and with him is
plenteous redemption.”

St. Paul uses an image very different from that of dry
bones, but to the same effect. To live in the flesh is to be
spiritually dead. “Those who are in the flesh cannot
please God.” The Blessed Virgin wants her people to
understand this.

The message of La Salette, like all of our readings today,
highlights God's will to restore us to life. In the words of
the first reading: “I have promised, and I will do it, says
the Lord.”

Sometimes we find ourselves praying “out of the depths.”
We need never despair. Lazarus was not a lost cause.
Neither are we.

Consumer Alert: Scammers Impersonating
Pastors to Solicit Gift Cards
Attorney General Ken Paxton issued a consumer alert
regarding persons alleging to be priests or pastors, tex-
ting members of the church and asking them to buy gift
cards for a false charitable cause.

Texans have received deceptive texts from people pre-
tending to be pastors, then requesting that they purchase
a gift card and send them the information to access that
card. The scammers claim these cards are needed for
some charitable reason, but insist they cannot pick up a
gift card themselves and the purchaser will be reim-
bursed.

All Texans should be aware of unsolicited calls and texts
from scammers impersonating leaders of the church. We
believe that the scammers are using information found on
churches’ websites or bulletins. Churches throughout
Texas have seen reports of this scam.
