AsMehmet,yourCaptain,hassaid,ithasbeenaratherwarmstarttothe2016newyearoftennis;oneofthereasonsIsuspectthatnumbershavebeenquitevariableonbothSaturdaysandJuniorClubFridays.

Iamverypleasedtobeback‘playing’–ratheraloosetermformeatpresent–asmyinjurycomesgood,andthankstoallofyouforyourencouragement!Nowtobusiness.

Firstly,manythankstothegreatCommitteefororganizingboththeSummerCoolerandtheSunsmartFunDay.Bothwereindeedalotoffunandverysuccessful.Inparticular,thankstoJaneandJohnEdwards,NoelLacey,TrishHeath,BarbNowakandMandyThomasforagreatjoboforganizationandfoodanddrinkproductionforthesoldoutSummerCooleronFebruary13th.Thisreallyrelaxedeveningcontributedsome$1200totheClub.ThanksalsotoGordonDavies,whouponwinningtheAlanBruce-sponsored‘BushfireRaffle’,andacceptingthehamper,graciouslyacceptedtheneedto‘giveitback’,asitwasactuallyanotherhamperintendedforpresentationattheSunsmartEventthefollowingday!NeedlesstosaythatGordon,after‘badgeringthePresident’foroveraweek,eventuallyreceivedhisrightfulprize.AspecialthankstoAlanBruceforhisinitiativeinsponsoringtheBushfireRaffle,whichraisedover$600.

LindaBlatchford,MelEnglish,LuciaAgnello,AnneandIanLove,andmanyothers,putinatremendouseffortinbothpromotingandrunningtheSunsmartCommunityFundayonSunday14thFebruary.ComingonthebackofaSunsmartgranttorunsuchaday,itwastheintentiontoatleastreachbreakevenpoint,however,wemanagedtoachievea$300profittotheClubwithahugeeffortbyall.Communityattendancewasnothuge,duetoothereventshappeninginthecommunityatthistimeofyear,suchasaConcertintheParkatnearbyMason’sGardens.TennisWestwasrepresentedandIwasabletodiscusswithArdianFazliuthepossibilityofTennisAustraliafundingavailableforClubdevelopment,andIintendtotakethatdiscussionfurther,ashewillbeattendingournextCommitteemeetinginMarch.

Directlyrelatedtothatpotentialfunding,IhavealsobeenindiscussionwiththeCityofNedlandsCEOwithregardstotheCityhavingamore‘significantinvolvement’infundingforfuturedevelopmentsofnotonlyNedlandsTennisClub,butindeedallclubsandcommunityfacilitieswithintheCity.Ifweproceedsensiblywithadevelopmentprogramfor,say,morelightingandhardcourts,theCityislikelytobeofgreaterassistancethanithaspreviously,specificallybecausethe‘pool’ofStateGovernment(DSR)Fundinghasdiminisheddramatically.

IlookforwardtoparticipatingintheupcomingClubChampionships,inbothOpenandRoundRobinEvents,andItrustthatasmanyofusthatcan,willdothesame.Theyareheldearlierthisleapyear,andHelenMorganhashadtoreallypushtheprogramtoenableaworkablerepresentationinallevents.Atlastcountshehassucceeded,andwethankyouforthatHelen.

So,allthebestforthe2016tennisyear,andinparticularthesummerseason;wewillbe‘prayingforsunshine’beforeweknowit!Thankyouforyourongoinginvolvementandsupportofaveryfineclubandcommunityasset.

HappyNewYeareveryone!

Sofarthisyear,betweenacoupleofstormyweekendsandseveralhotones,wehavehadreasonablygoodSaturdaysocialtennis.SocialtennisattendanceasofthefirstweekendofFebruaryindicatesthatmostmembersarebackfromholidaysandsetforagreatyearoftennisandfunattheClub.

AlthoughSaturdaysarethemainsocialplayday,wehavegroupsplayingsocialtennisatvarioustimesthroughouttheweek.Allmembersarewelcometojointhesegroupsaswell.Asusual,thegrasscourtsareingreatshape.WethankShaneWatsonandhisteamfortheirgreatwork.

Besidesplayingtennis,ouraimistokeepandmaintaintheClubasasocialhubforthemembers,withregularandannualeventssuchastheSummerCoolerfeastandtheSunSmartfunafternoonthatwehavejusthad.Alsomakesureyoumarkyourcalendarforthe2016ClubDinnerinmidMay.

TheClub’slastbigfunctionof2015wastheChristmasPartywhichwasmarvellouslyorganizedbyAlisonGattorna.Wethankherandherhelpersforthegreatjobincludingthesausagecookoutforthekids.WealsothankSteveHollierforputtingonhisfamousredcostumeandentertainingkidswithgiftsandinspirationalconversations.

IamverygratefultothoseofyouwhohavebeenDutyCaptainssincetheopeningofthenewseason.EveryonehasdoneafabulousjobandIreallyappreciateyourgenerosityandcommitment.ThanksalsogotoLuciaAgnelloforthecoordinationandhousekeepingcontributionandJordonLilburneforhisdedicationandconsistentdeliveryofthesets.

Afternoonteamakershavebeenveryorganizedandgenerouswiththeirdeliciousofferingsbutthe‘Oscar’hadtogotoNigelBillandNeilRider,whoseafternoontea,withoutanysocialtennisonastormySaturdayafternoon,apparentlyattractedabout15(Iamtold)members,includingGordonDavies,whoapparentlycancelledhishomeopensohecouldattendafternoontea.

ClubChampionshipsarejustaroundthecornerandIhopemostofyouare“positioningyourself”totakepartinthecompetitionsthatareavailableateverylevel;whetheritbechampionshipevents,ortheroundrobineventswhicharealwayslotsoffunwithafullafternoonofplay.

SeniormidweekandweekendleagueteamsareallrunningrelativelysmoothlyandsuccessfullyalthoughtherewassomeexcitementrecentlywhenthepowerboxcaughtonfireduringaWednesdayNightMen’smatch.ItwasjustaswellthisincidentoccurredonaWednesdayeveningandwascalmlydealtwithbySteveHollierandPeterFrench;haditoccurredonaThursdayevening,weallagreedthatourprobablereactionwouldhavebeentostandaroundscreaming!

AbigthankyoutoShanefordealingwiththisincidentsoefficientlyandensuringthepowerwasbackonintimeforThursdaynightleaguematchesthenextevening.

Elevenofthe17seniorleagueteamsarecurrentlyinthetopfour,withfourteams(WednesdayLadiesDivision2,ThursdayNightLadiesDivision3,SaturdayLadiesDivision3andSaturdayLadiesDivision6)beingontopoftheladderatthisstage.

Thesuccessandsmoothoperationofourleagueteamsisinstarkcontrasttothesub-optimalandstillflounderingoperationoftheCompetitionwebsite.Atthisstagethereisnoindicationofwhenratingswillbeadjusted-excellentifyourperformancehasbeenbelowparbutnotsogoodifyouhaveexperiencedarapidimprovementinresults.

Itisjustaswellthatformostofustheonlyimpactisonourleisureactivityratherthanourfinancialorphysicalhealth.

WhenFrankSweeneyraisedthepossibilityofformingateamabout9monthspriortotheevent,theideawasenthusiasticallysupported.Eightplayerssignedupimmediately.Theteamcomprisedaleadershipgroup(Frankand6co-captains)andme.Preparationemphasizedteamstructure,possiblematchupsandrotations.Withthewisdomofhindsightthereweresignificantomissionsinthefailuretoformatennisdepartmentandnotimewasallocatedfortraining,otherthanseveralsevenononesessionstoimprovemycelebratoryhighfives,handslaps,fistbumpsandpumps.ThiswastheWA3teamintheagegroup.

CampaignheadquarterswereinEastShepparton,whereIanMumford’spresumablyformerclosefriend“Dizzy”inexplicablymadehishouseavailable.Thereweregoodomenswiththelocaleseeminglysteepedintennistradition,withroadsignscelebratingthecurrentNTCCaptainandtheformerhomeoftheAustralianOpen.

Weareandwereaproudteam,butunfortunatelybynomatterwhatyardstick,realisticallynopridecouldbetakeninachievementsrealized.ThehighlightwasFSweeneyandKShannonwinningbothsetsintheroundrobinmatchagainsteventualwinnersWA1.However,postmatchanalysissuggestedthisresultmayhavelargelyresultedfromaboutoffoodpoisoningintheopposition.GratefulthankstoNTCstalwartPhilHoltenwhotravelledastheircookandwho,asaconsequence,wonourteamMVP.Inthefinalwashupitwasprobablyouryouth,inexperienceandtheweightofcarryingtheexpectationsandhopesoftheentirestatethatprovedtoogreat.

Regrettablytherearenosupportersorsponsorstothank.

AgreatbigthankyoutoeveryonethathelpedputtheFunDaytogether,whetheritwasdistributingsomeofthe2000leafletsdoor-to-doorin38degreeheat,ormakingcupcakes,orloaningagazebo!Somanymemberschippedinandhelped.Childlabourwasdefinitelyonshowonthedaywithmanyyoungstersmanagingthedifferentattractions.Ajobwelldone.

TheClubhadrecentlywonagrantfromSunsmart,HealthwayandTennisWesttoholdaCommunityFunDay.SointrueClubspirit,thefunwasnotjustabigpartoftheactualday,butalsoabigpartofputtingitalltogether.

Distributing2000leafletsdoor-to-doorovera2dayperiodwaswellexecuted;15mainvolunteerswithoftenpartnersorchildrenhelpingout.Sometravelledonfoot,othersonbikes,othersonscootersorskateboards;therewasnostoppingus.WecoveredanareaasfarasMosmanPark,toMountClaremont,ShentonPark,Claremont,Dalkeith,Crawleyandofcourse,Nedlands.Nostreetwasuntouched!

ShaneWatsondidalotofworkbehindthescenes–makingup30sandbags,helpingWarrenandAlanputuptheSpeedServeandHittheTarget,sortingoutthebarbecues,lockinggates,stockingupthebarwiththehelpofKenHouston,helpingtoworkoutwherealltheattractionsshouldgotomakethebestuseofthelimitedwaterandelectricitysupply!HeevenhadtimetodistributeleafletswithhisDad!

By12.30pmonthedaytheClubwasrocking;JuniorPennantshadjustfinished,allhelperswereonsitedoingtheirbittohelpgetitallready.Signswentup,gazeboswentup,sandbagsstrategicallyplaced,eskieslinedup,tablesandchairswereputontotheterrace,allwateramusementswereblownupandfinallywewerereadyforthecommunity.

AnneLoveandherhelpershadbaked200cupcakestosellontheday,allofwhichwerebakedontheactualmorningofFunday,nosmalltask!

MelEnglishandherhelpersfendedoffgate-crashers,gettingeveryonetoregistercominginthroughthemaingates(Shanehadlockedallothergates).Allwererewardedwithafreetubeofsuncream.

TheafternoonwaspackedwithbothmembersoftheClubandmembersofthecommunityatlarge.ThevibearoundtheClubwasfunandexciting.Thekidshadanabsoluteblast!Toddlers(includingAlanLane–howistheneckAlan?)playedonthebouncycastle;olderchildrenranatspeedanddivedontothewaterslide;therewasalwaysaqueuefortheDunkTank–peopledidn’twanttojustdunkWarren,AlanandNigel,butwantedtobedunkedthemselves!TennisExcellenceprovidedfreecoachingforbeginnersandFast4Tennisforplayers,alongwithSpeedServeandHittheTarget.AfewselectmarketstallsgaveparentsthechancetotalkThermomix,tryaproteindrink,tryonahatandjewellery,andbuyanEnjoteatowel!Therewerecompetitionsforthebestsilliestglasses,thebestsilliesthat,plusaSunSmartquiz.PrizesweredonatedbyoursponsorsCooper&Lourie,andTennisOnly.RedmanLabsprovidedthefreetubesofsuncream.

AlihasadegreeinSportsScience,specializinginbuildingperformanceathletes.Hehasbeencoachingfornearly20yearsinEuropeandAustralia.WhilstinPerth,hehasheldtheroleofPerformanceCoachatBlueGumParkTennisClub,HeadCoachatMtLawleyTennisClub,andlastyearwasworkingatPeppermintGroveTennisClub.WewereluckyhewasavailabletocoverforAndrewsofarthisterm,andhappythathehasagreedtostayon.Aliisaspecialistintechniqueandiswelllikebyhisclients,asanumberofthemhavefollowedhimtoNTCfromhispreviouspositions.Heisavailableforprivatelessonsandwillbeagreatassetforyourgame.

Red,OrangeandGreen/YellowballplayersareallwelcometojoininonFridays,4.30–5.30pm.RememberitisFREEformembersandonly$12forvisitors,whichincludesasausagesizzleanddrink.Itisagreatwaytoseeouttheschoolweekforthekidsandmanyparentsbringouttherugsandhavearelaxingdrinkandchattoeaseintheweekend.

CLUBCHAMPIONSHIPS

Whilstourentrydateforjuniorclubchampshaspassed,wewantasmanyofyouaspossibleplaying,soifyoustillwishtoplaypleasecontactWarrenbyemailASAPandwemaybeabletogetyouin.Thisisagreatopportunityforallourplayerstobecrownedthewinneroftheiragedgroupsodon’tmissout.

WINTERLEAGUEFORJUNIORS

Wewillbeputtingupa‘registeryourinterest”sheetintheclubhousethisweekforjuniorswantingtoplayinwinter.Duetocourtrestrictionsinwinterweneedtotryandkeepontopofhowmanyteamswehaveandtrytoensureopportunitiesforallourdifferentlevelsofplayers.Nominationformswillgooutinthenextcoupleofweeks.Theseasonwillrunfor12weeksintermstwoandthreeonSundaymornings.

Passedawaypeacefullyonthe11thofDecember2015.

WhenJohnandAnnaClapinretiredfromtheirfarminCranbrook,theycametoliveintheirhomeinKingsmillStreet,Claremont.TheyjoinedtheNedlandsTennisClubandwereveryregularattendeesonSaturdaysandjoinedinallthesocialfunctions.

AnnaplayedsocialtenniswiththeWednesdayladiesandlovedthefellowship,friendshipandcamaraderiethatdevelopedwithinthisgroup.AftertheyresignedfromtheclubAnnaandJohnstillkeptintouchwiththemembersoftheWednesdaygroupandalsoattendedclubfunctions.ApartfromtennisAnnawasaverykeengardener,aregularbridgeplayerandanaccomplishedoilpainter.

Annawasaverypopularmember,alwayscheerful,andwillbesadlymissedbyclubmembers.

HowardLange

STEWART FINCH

StewartwasalongtimememberoftheNedlandsTennisClub,probablyjoiningintheearly80’swhenhestoppedplayingcricket.Hewasagoodplayerand,ashedidn’tplaypennantsasaregularmemberoftheteam,hewasastalwartofSaturdaysocialtennis.AlwaysapleasurewhenputonasetwithStewart.Aperfectgentleman,goodsportandhappytostayforadrink.Hewasagoodsupporterofmanyofoursocialfunctions.Stewartlovedthetennisclub,andheplayedintheinauguralNTCgolfdayatMeadowSprings.BeingamemberofCottesloeGolfClub,hewashandywithagolfclubtoo.

Originallyanengineer,hechangedjobswhenthesharemarketbecamequitelucrativeandbecameastockbrokerworkingforHartleyPoynton.

Stewartwasdiagnosedwithoesophagealcancerabout3yearsago,andafteralongstruggle,didreturntotennistotrytogainsomestrengthbuttonoavail.

Stewarthadmanytalents,wasatopscholar,highachieverandhelovedtotravel.Hehasleftalovingpartnerof10yearsTima,andwillbemissedbymanyfriendsandfamily.ItisagreatlossandsadnesstosomanythatStewartpassedawayatarelativelyyoungageof57.
