TONY’S TIME
We Are What We Eat And Do I just read an article in Readers Digest
that referenced recent studies of insu-
lin and its impact on dementia and memory. The
article indicated that until recently insulin was be-
lieved to have been the main purpose of regulat-
ing blood sugar. It is now believed that the hor-
mone helps neurons in the brain utilize glucose
(sugar) for energy and regulates brain chemicals
for memory and learning. It is also important for
the function of blood vessels which supply the
brain with oxygen and glucose.
This article continues to explain the theory that
frequently consuming higher fatty and sugar
foods can result in high insulin levels. Constantly
high insulin levels in turn overwhelm the brain
which impairs the ability to think and form memo-
ries before leading to permanent neural dam-
age. The article points out that this research is in
its early stages and suggests that a bad diet
may set the wheels in motion for brain degener-
ation. With this said, researchers are currently
investigating whether certain diabetes drugs can
improve Alzheimer’s symptoms by regulating in-
sulin. This research suggests that “maintaining a
healthy weight and lifestyle may help deter cog-
nitive decline”.
It seems that we don’t have to look too hard to-
day to find published information that tells us
good physical and mental health is strongly cor-
related to healthy eating and good physical ac-
tivity. The Thompson Community Center has
many classes that promote good physical health
and a nutritious lunch at our Thompson Café of-
fered on Tuesday through Thursday can contrib-
ute to good mental health as well. We invite you
to take a class at TCC and enjoy a nutritious lunch
either before or after your class with members of
your class. Friendship and companionship also go
a long way in maintaining good mental health. Here’s wishing you good health!
Sincerely,
Tony Gonzalez

TCC is a Welcoming Place...
It’s How We Began as the Welcome Wagon,
It’s Who We Are Today
Recognize our visitors. They want to be wel-comed. Provide a smile or friendly greeting.
Greet everyone! Regular participants also need to feel welcomed.
Anticipate the newcomers. Watch for participants who appear lost, confused, anxious or quiet. Remember how difficult it can be to be alone in a new environment.
Help everyone connect. If someone is alone, invite him/her into your group. Practice kindness often.
Say goodbye with warmth. Help create the desire to return.
Survey the area. Does it look welcoming and clean? Have you left anything behind and helped keep TCC clean? Please remember to push your chair back under the table to prevent a tripping hazard.
Report back. Report any problems or needs for assistance to the front desk.
Take ownership. This is your community center…welcoming others and keeping it in great shape is everyone’s responsibility.
Keep the Thompson Community Center a warm and
welcoming place!

LUTHERAN SOCIAL SERVICES SIDE-BY-SIDE A substance abuse treatment program de-signed specially for those ages 55 and over at the Thompson Center
AA Thursdays at 12:45
QUICK FACTS ABOUT SUBSTANCE ABUSE….. Substance abuse, particularly of alcohol and
prescription drugs, is one of the fastest grow-
ing health problems facing older adults. Even
as the number of older adults suffering from
these disorders climbs, the situation remains
underestimated, under identified, underdiag-
nosed and undertreated. Until relatively re-
cently, alcohol and prescription drug misuse,
which affects up to 17 percent of older
adults, was not discussed in either the sub-
stance abuse or the gerontological literature.
Many people link alcohol abuse to college stu-
dents engaged in binge drinking. However,
alcohol abuse in older adults often goes un-
detected. For example, few realize widowers
over age 75 have the highest rate of alcohol-
ism in the country. It is not widely known that
alcohol-related problems put older Americans
in the hospital more often than heart attacks.
Family and medical personnel often miss signs of
alcohol abuse in older adults.
Aging changes the way bodies metabolize alco-
hol. Furthermore, as people age, they tend to
require an increased number of medications
to stay healthy. Medications and alcohol can
be a dangerous combination without diligence
and oversight.
Mixing alcohol with prescription and over-the-
counter drugs such as tranquilizers, sleeping
pills, pain killers or antihistamines can be very
dangerous, even fatal. For example, aspirin
can cause bleeding in the stomach and intes-
tines; when aspirin is combined with alcohol,
the risk of bleeding is much higher.
There are two types of problem drinkers – chron-
ic and situational. Chronic abusers have been
heavy drinkers for many years. Although
many chronic abusers die by middle age,
some live well into old age. Older problem
drinkers are in this group.
Other people may develop a drinking problem
late in life, often because of "situational"
Share the Care:
Share the Care is a process that helps individuals
and families broaden their circle of support by
engaging family members, friends, co-workers,
church members and others in helping to support
an individual as they age or during a serious ill-
ness. This presentation explains the process and
how to get started. March 20, 5 p.m. to reserve
your spot, please contact the ADRC Outagamie
Branch; 920-832-5178, 866-739-2372, or
email adrc@outagamie.org. Location for the
Share the Care program is the Thompson Com-
munity Center.
factors such as retirement, lowered income, fail-
ing health, loneliness or the death of friends or
loved ones. At first, having a drink brings relief,
but later it can turn into a problem. The good
news is that older problem drinkers have a
strong chance for recovery because once they
decide to seek help they usually stay with treat-
ment programs. A family doctor or clergy mem-
ber can provide information and support. A local
health department or social services agency also
can help.
If you have questions about alcohol or drug use,

For Your Information
Do you need a ride to a physician’s office, or
the beauty shop? Do you need to do errands on
a weekly basis? This program’s vision is to pro-
vide a central location with comprehensive infor-
mation on transportation options for the disa-
bled individual and older adult. We can pro-
vide information & assistance to clients and their
families in Outagamie, Calumet and Winnebago
County. One way we can assist the older adult
in the Fox Cities is through a volunteer driver
program called “Senior Wheels”. For those cli-
ents who wish to use the public bus systems we
can provide a “Bus Buddy” to assist them in
greater coordination and collaboration. Our
hope is to improve access to transportation for
those individuals who cannot drive any longer.
Do you like to drive? Enjoy helping others? Can
you donate ½ day a month? We are always
looking for volunteer drivers!
Please contact staff at Making the Ride Happen
at 225-1719 or toll free 1-888-200-0576.
Office hours are 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday
– Friday.
MAKING THE RIDE HAPPEN
TCC expresses sincere thanks and heartfelt ap-
preciation for the donation recently received in
memory of Lorin M Heimerl
Do you know of a TCC participant who is in the
hospital or has lost a loved one? Please call
Ruth Rucks, our Sunshine Lady, at 733-6570
and she will send a card from TCC.
