Did you know?
Ash Wednesday is the first day of the ob-
servance of the 40 days of Lent. This is the
ceremony that marks the foreheads of the
faithful and calls them to penance. It was es-
tablished as the first day of Lent by St. Greg-
ory the Great (590-604). Pope Paul VI de-
clared this day to be one of universal fasting
and abstinence (takes from p 55 The Catholic
Encyclopedia by Broderick)
¿Sabias Que?
Gospel Meditation
Take a moment and consider this question, “What is your goal in
life?” Perhaps we need to make a list. Our true goal or priority may
be identified by where we commit time, money and resources. To-
day, Jesus challenges us to orient everything we do toward enhanc-
ing our relationship with God. Jesus tells us that we cannot serve
God and material goods. Just as a servant cannot serve their master
and their master’s enemy. God does not ask us to be irresponsible
but to use our talents and time wisely in order to glorify God.
metemos nuestro tiempo, dinero y recursos.
Word of Life
“Whether it lasts for a brief moment or for a hundred years, each of
our lives is a good and perfect gift. At every stage and in every cir-
cumstance, we are held in existence by God’s love. …Every life is
worth living.” USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities
Ascension’s First Acts Men’s Retreat We would like to congratulate the group of men that
said “Yes” to God’s call and experienced this wonderful
retreat this weekend. Our appreciation to everyone that
was part of this process and to Father Ramiro for his
unconditional support in this spiritual journey.
Prayer: Changes our relationship to God. Through prayer, we ad-
mit our need for a power that is greater than ourselves. We
acknowledge our limitations and let go of the drive to control every-
thing. In the process, we open ourselves to all that God has to offer
us.
Fasting: Expresses our desire to find happiness in God rather than
in the satisfaction of our physical needs. The control we gain over
our appetites helps us recognize more deeply that all true and lasting
pleasure comes from God. Knowing this we are freed to gratefully
accept food and savor it, or to avoid or limit foods that we know are
unhealthy for us. Through fasting, our relationship wo ourselves is
reoriented toward God.
Almsgiving: Provides assistance to the poor among us and helps us
recognize God as the true source of our security. Property and
wealth exercise less control over us when we give away or share our
wealth out of love for God and for others. Almsgiving is a way of
brining our relationship to others into the orbit of Christ’s love.
Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Scripture readings this Sunday invite us to rest in the
loving embrace of God, who knows us and our needs and like a
mother, will never forget us. Such trust frees us from being
concerned about material things, as Jesus points out in the Gos-
pel for today. This may seem simplistic as we look at so many
in our world without basic needs. But we know that God has
provided enough for all, what is missing in our world is not
God’s care, but our generosity. How have we experienced
God’s care for us and how might we be agents of God’s loving
care towards others this week? What acts of kindness or gener-
osity might we show so others know God’s love for them?
From Ashes to Easter: The diocesan Ashes to Easter Lenten Mission Campaign begins
on Ash Wednesday, March 1. We invite each family to take a
mission box home in support of the missionary works of the
Diocese of Austin. As the Catechism states, “The seasons and
days of penance in the course of the liturgical year (Lent, and
Each Friday in memory of the Lord) are intense moments of the
Church’s penitential practice. These times are particularly ap-
propriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, and pil-
grimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as
fasting and alms giving, and fraternal sharing (charitable and
missionary works)” (CCC 1438). Please support this long-
standing campaign.
misioneras y caritativas)” (CCC 1438). Por favor apoye a esta
campaña de larga duración
