Maps Preview (pg 14)

Draw a map from school to your house. Be sure to include street names and major landmarks/ points of interest.

cart-og-ra-phy (noun)

The science or practice of drawing maps.

Cartography helps show reality in a way that can be communicated effectively.

car-tog-ra-pher (noun)

a person who makes maps.

Cartographers study geography to make maps of all kinds.

key (noun)

an explanatory list of symbols used in a map or table.

The key helps me read my cookie map.

Po-lit-i-cal Map (noun)

a map that shows governmental boundaries: countries, states, and counties.

The political map shows that sacramento is the capital of California.

phy-si-cal map (noun)

maps that show landforms such as mountains, deserts, and plains.

The physical map of california is very diverse.

scale (noun)

a ratio that compares measurement on a map to that of reality.

Scales are used on maps as tools for measuring distance.

com-pass rose (noun)

Def: a circle showing the principal directions printed on a map or chart.

Sentence: Many maps show direction by displaying a compass rose.

hold up, prove, help.

Scale

explains the ratio of distance on a map to distance on the ground.

Example: 1 cm on a map might equal 100 miles on a map.

It actually has 32 points but we only use 4 or 8.

Key/Legend

Explains the meaning of each symbol used in a map.

Grid

Helps locate places on a map.

Horizontal = latitude (fatitude!)

Vertical = longitude

Insert

A more detailed (or larger scale) representation of a specific area on a map.
