• A globe is a representation of the Earth in the shape of a sphere.

• With a partner, make a list of what you would see labeled on a globe.

Flat Maps…

• A flat map is a representation of the earth that is on a flat surface.

• Because flat maps are flat, they can be inaccurate when judging sizes of landforms.

• They are handy, though!

What to look for on a Map

• Title (Circle it)

• Legend (Star it)

• Map Scale (Point an Arrow at it)

• Compass Rose (Box it)

Latitude vs. Longitude

Latitude ~~ “FLATitude” aka Parallels

• Lines run EAST to WEST.

• The Equator is 0°.

• The Equator cuts the earth in half into Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Longitude ~~ “L-O-N-G” aka Meridians

• Lines run NORTH to SOUTH. • The Prime Meridian is 0°. • It cuts the earth in

half into Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

• The line opposite the Prime Meridian at 180° is the International Date Line.
