Ecclesiastes 3:1 “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” NRSV
As a child, I can remember singing ‘kiddie’ songs along with other kids at the playground at Webster Elementary School in Williston. We sang songs like “London Bridge Is Falling Down” and “Baa Baa Black Sheep”. I don’t know if little kids sing songs like that at school playgrounds anymore. One ‘kiddie song’ came back into my head last Tuesday when we had our first Task Force meeting with Randy Askvig, P.E., who is President of Prairie Engineering. The song that came to mind was “The Old Gray Mare”.
The old gray mare, she ain’t what she used to be,
Ain’t what she used to be, ain’t what she used to be;
The old gray mare, she ain’t what she used to be, many long years ago.
The old gray mare that came to mind is the gray Kewanee Boiler that has resided in the east corner of the basement off the Fellowship Hall since being installed in late 1955. Randy met with the Task Force on Tuesday, May 17th, to provide an assessment of our heating plant and to provide us with estimates for the replacement of our heating system. The assessment of our existing boiler is not encouraging...it has surpassed it’s service life and will again require costly maintenance this summer to be ready for our next fall and winter usage. The ‘band aid’ fixes of the past few years at a cost of approximately $20,000.00 have only enabled the boiler to continue to operate but have not addressed the age and fatigue of the primary system. This summer we need to replace leaking pipework and address ongoing corrosion of primary components.
We should have some preliminary estimates by the end of May and so I will keep the congregation updated as the Task Force continues to do its work. Members of the Task Force are: Jeff Bradford and DJ Campbell who are the Property and Management Team Representatives on the church council, Tim Faller and Darrell Nitschke, ad hoc representatives from church council, Ralph Feland, Norman Roth and Gary Tomanek as congregational representatives. You are also welcome to visit with them with any questions you may have.
The grade school in Williston where I sang those ‘kiddie songs’ was torn down over 30 years ago; Kewanee Boiler in Kewanee, Illinois declared bankruptcy in 2002 and no longer exists; I turned 64 on May 10th of this year and am becoming an ‘old gray mare’ myself. As the writer of Ecclesiastes states, “for everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven”. Thank you to the Task Force for all of their work in addressing this matter.
Until next time,
Pastor Lee

Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center’s M-Club
Announces May 2016 Project Funding
The Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center (MSLCC) M-Club met on Tuesday, May 10 to
award funds for enhancement projects at the facility. Five new proposals were funded
including a patio enhancement project for Valley View Heights Assisted Living (VVH), a light
pipe installation at the VVH Chapel, a new patio swing for the courtyard at MSLCC, a table
for the MSLCC chapel and 12 new lift chairs for the West View Memory Care Unit at MSLCC.
The M-Club was organized in 1968 to assist MSLCC in attaining its mission. Funds contributed
to the M-Club are for equipment or projects which enhance the lives of our resident and
tenants, but go beyond the scope of the normal funding budget.
Joining the M-Club is easy! For more information contact our Foundation Director, Jessica
Gilbertson at 701-221-9349 or jgilbertson@mslcc.com. Thank you to our generous
congregations and donors for making the work of the M-Club possible!

First Lutheran Church Council Minutes
Date: Thursday, April 21, 2016
Time: 7:00 pm
Members Present: Pastor Lee Herberg, Pastor Christina Martin, Vice President Jeff
Bradford, Jessie Hilfer, Rynell Rusch, Darrell Nitschke, DJ Campbell, Andrea Bonness, and
Tim Faller
Absent: President Jill Miller and Secretary Jessica Petrick
Devotions: Pastor Christina led devotions.
Vice President Jeff Bradford called the meeting to order.
Approval of Agenda: Moved by Tim, seconded by Andrea to approve the agenda. Motion
passed.
Secretary’s Report/Review and Approval of the minutes:
Moved by Darrell, 2nd by Rynell to approve the council minutes of March 17, 2016. Motion
passed.
Financial Report/Review:
We are now through the first quarter of 2016. We’re $1,300 under total income for the same
period last year. Expenses are $256 higher than same period last year. $7,868 income over
expense for 2016 through March 31, 2016. The mild winter greatly helped with utility costs and
sidewalk snow removal costs.
Unfinished Business:
Retaining walls – Dakota Outdoor Scapes will be repairing the retaining wall that is on the
south end of the division between the lower and upper parking lot. We have mailed them a
check for 10% of the $5985 bid. Darrell commented that we should look for other landscape
and drainage options to possibly get rid of the walls instead of continuing to invest and repair
walls that are 21 years old.
Windows and window coverings are complete and look great.
Security system – Have 2 bids
New Vision total bid $14,865.00
TS Security total bid $12,400.54
We will invite TS Security to May meeting for Q & A and also for other businesses he’s installed
this system with so we can go check it out. Will also ask Kevin Fishbeck to attend as he is the
“tech guy” from church. Moved by Tim, 2nd by Jessie. Motion passed
Projector – Bid from Tricorne $10,180
Need more bids and have not received one yet from Pacific Sound. Council members gave
Pastor Lee names of more local companies to call.
NEW BUSINESS:
Summer church service schedule – One service on Sundays at 9:30 am starting the first Sunday
in June through the last Sunday in August. Darrell moved, 2nd by DJ. Motion passed
Summer office hours – discussed other local churches hours. We proposed to close at 3 on
Fridays. Jackie would take ½ hour lunches to make up the hours. Darrell moved to allow Lee
to make the final decision on office hours. 2nd by Tim. Motion passed.
Golf Tournament – Darrell Nitschke is organizing the golf tournament for the first Sunday in
August. Would like to decide which area of the church we could do fundraising for (ex: youth,
school supplies, LAF) He will give Jackie the information to put announcements in the bulletin
in May to check for interest. He is thinking $200 per team and will have additional fun and
fundraisers at each hole.
REPORTS:
Pastor Lee’s report – 1 baptism, 1 funeral, 0 weddings, still mentoring Bill Dodd with weekly
meetings.
Pastor Chris’s report – 0 baptisms, 1 funeral, 0 weddings, did nursing home visits for the
month, completed Professional Boundary training through the Western North Dakota Synod.

33 Seniors this year.
Stewardship – No report
Worship—No report
Parish Education/Youth - Spring confirmation retreat in March at Camp of the Cross.
Bibles were ordered for next year’s confirmation group. We ordered early in order to take
advantage of free shipping offered right now.
Last church school and confirmation this coming week.
May 15 from 5-7 pm WINGS group (numerous local Lutheran churches) will have Frisbee golf
at Hillside Park in Bismarck for 6-12 graders.
Vacation Bible School June 6-10th. Can register online. Need meal hosts. Jackie is hosting the
counselors at her home from Sunday through Thursday.
