Biography Born 30 November 1899 in Khortitsa, a German-speaking Mennonite colony in the Southern Ukraine, David Rempel came of age during the Soviet Civil War. He spent his career as an historian and teacher preserving the vanishing culture of the Mennonites in Russia and the Ukraine. As an émigré who had little choice but to leave his homeland, Rempel also was a fierce opponent of Nazi sympathizers among Mennonites, as well as a passionate critic of the excesses of the Cold War. He spent much of his retirement donating his vast library to various Mennonite institutions, and writing informed letters of protest to members of the United States Congress. A graduate of a Mennonite teaching seminary (1920), David Rempel taught in Southern Russia before immigrating to Saskatchewan in 1923. Canada was the first country to open its borders to the Mennonites and David Rempel wished that his papers return to the nation that had done the most to rescue his people. He was, however, to spend only a year in his adopted land, working on a farm and studying English at the Rosthern Academy. A year later he was awarded a scholarship to study at Bluffton College in the state of Ohio, along with a half dozen other Russian-born Mennonite men. Upon graduation he commenced graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, earning a Master’s degree in Political Science. He worked as a translator at the Hoover Library of Stanford University, where he was to complete a Ph.D. His dissertation, “The Mennonite Colonies in Russia: a Study of their Settlement and Economic Development from 1789 to 1914” set the standard for Mennonite historical scholarship and is contained in this collection. From 1934 to 1964, David Rempel was employed at the College of San Mateo in suburban San Francisco. His tenure at the college was interrupted for service in the United States Strategic Air Force in London, where he served as an historian during the Second World War. David Rempel returned to the Soviet Union in 1962 to do research in the State Historical Archives in Leningrad (again Saint Petersburg), where he was granted unprecedented access to historical materials that had hitherto been thought lost.
David Rempel witnessed the end of almost 200 years of Mennonite history in Russia, observing the effects of the Makhnovshchina (from Makhno, an anarchist bandit from the Soviet civil war + the suffix shchina that denotes a calamitous event worthy of remembrance), the forced starvation that accompanied the collectivization of private lands, both of which precipitated the mass emigration of German-speaking Mennonites to Canada. But David G. Rempel spent the majority of his life meticulously collecting documents about Mennonite history in pre-revolutionary Russia. He died in Menlo Park California on 5 July 1992.

David Gerhard Rempel Papers Series Three Secondary Sources This series contains texts written by parties other than David Rempel and his brother John Rempel. Accordingto the policy of the Thomas Fisher library, only texts with notations by DGR, unpublished materials, and complete xerox copies of difficultto obtain materials have been archived. Incomplete texts without notations from DGR have been destroyed, as have newspaper clippings whose unavoidable deterioration endangers the acid free environment of archived materials.
