Inside this issue
Namaskar Foundation Supporters,
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Maharashtra Foundation I would like to thank
all our donors for making 2016 such a banner year. Your donations exceeded over
$800,000 largely through the generosity of some large donors and hundreds of you
who donated to your favorite charity as well to MF sponsored projects.
There is not one single reason for this surge in donations, but there are many ways by
which you donated funds this year. I would like to list a few of these methods in order
to provoke some thoughts in your minds of creative methods for donating to
Maharashtra Foundation: (a) Bestowing funds in your final will for your favorite charity
through Maharashtra Foundation, (b) Designating Maharashtra Foundation as a
beneficiary for your Charitable Trust as well as directing the mandatory annual
withdrawals to the foundation for your designated charity, ( c ) Start a Donor Advisory
Fund (DAF) with Maharashtra Foundation. This allows you to donate a lump sum
amount to the Foundation and make periodic withdrawals for your favorite charity. (d)
Employer matching donations- Many major employers will match your donation to
MF, so that your donation to your favorite charity is doubled or even tripled. Check
with your employer if they participate in the matching donation program. ( e ) Payroll
deduction-Many employers will allow you to contribute to MF through direct payroll
deductions. This way you do not have to write a check each time you want to donate,
instead a payroll deduction is made by your employer. Check with your employer. ( f )
Stock Transfer- Maharashtra Foundation has made arrangements with Raymond
James for direct transfer of your equity to MF and ultimately to your charity. (g) Fund
Raising Events- Arrange a fund-raising event in your local community, town or city, to
raise funds for your favorite cause or MF selected projects. Encourage friends in your
community to become Life/Patron/Benefactor members of Maharashtra Foundation.
The Foundation will assist you in any way we can for such an event.
In this regards I would like to Thank 16-year-old Aniruddh Khanwale from Seattle who
raised $1000 from his karate class for, Door Step School. I would like you to encourage
youngsters like Aniruddh to hold similar fund raising events for their passion of
“Giving”. (Please see Aniruddh's article inside).
The foundation’s success is not only in collecting funds but Foundation has succeeded
in some of its own initiatives, supported by your generosity. Several years ago, the
estate of Prince Khedkar bestowed $1Million to build a hospital in Anjanvel. Through
our partnership with Yusuf Meheralli Center (YMC) the hospital was opened in 2016
and is attending to patients every day. After the massive earthquake in Nepal you
donated generously for rebuilding of Nepal. Through your donations and our

partnership with GMIN (a local organization) we were
able to finish re-construction of a school in
Kavrepalanchok district of Nepal. Through our
partnership with Save India Farmers (SIF), Seattle
Marathi Mandal (SMM), initiatives of Brihan
Maharashtra Mandal (BMM), and other local
organizations, we have participated in various projects
to aid the Indian farmers to get through this calamity
and avoid the helplessness in the future during such
disasters. Last year through a generous donation of one
of our donors we were able to participate in the
production of the movie—Kaasav. Kaasav was written by
Sumitra Bhave & directed by Sumitra Bhave/ Suneel
Sukathankar . The lead roles are Irawati Harshe and Alok
Rajwade . Dr Mohan Agashe also played an important
role in the production of this movie. Kaasav won the
most prestigious Rashtrapati's Suvarna Kamal award for
Best film for 2016. Kaasav also won the Best Actress,
Best Dialogue & Best Editing from Zee Marathi Chitra
Gaurav Puraskar Film for 2016. Over the past several
years our partnership with NGO,s like HALO Medical
Foundation, Stree Mukti Sanghatna, Muktangan, WRCS,
RSCD, Samvedna and many many others have produced
incredible results in Social Reform and direct Aid. Our
partnership with Parivartan, Sadhna Trust and Keshav
Gore Trust (Host of Maharashtra Foundation Literature
and Social Service Award) grows stronger every year.
There are many more such projects, where MF has
played a major role. If I was to list all our projects here, it
will consume this entire newsletter. A complete list will
be published shortly on our website
www.maharashtrafoundation.org. This year the Board
of Directors of MF is also considering a local project here
in the US. We would like to find a suitable local NGO to
enter into partnership in areas related to drug addiction,
obesity, mental illness or any such social impact project.
I would like to receive your input, please drop us a note
or email us. Lastly, I Thank all of you for your support of
Maharashtra Foundation. Your continued support will
help us accomplish our goals of Women’s
Empowerment, Literacy, Health Care, Welfare, and
Environment. Please remember “Social and Economic
Empowerment for all” is our motto.
Shirish Gupte.
President, Maharashtra Foundation.

and deploy this important message. What better time
to deliver this informative address than MMCs inaugu-
ral program of Makar Sankranti held on Jan 21 in front
a gathering of 775+ who came to witness Mahesh
Kale’s Sur Niragas Ho. In attendance were BMMs Presi-
dent Mr. Nitin Joshi, BMM Detroit President – Dr. Mrs.

the various projects undertaken by Maharashtra

reaching out to many MMA members to become new
Maharashtra Foundation donors at the event. The MMA
audience was fortunate to witness the talk of Mukta
Ahankari, a daughter of Dr. Shashikant Ahankari,
President of HALO medical Foundation. Mukata shared
how she grew up in the HMF environment when MF
supported Bharat Vaidya and other projects over the
past several years. “Teen Payanchi Sharyat’ is a Marathi
natak is directed by a well-known Marathi director Shri.
Vijay Kenkare. It is a two and half hour suspense thriller

has been nominated for ‘Zee Gaurva Purskar 2017’ in
various categories. This play was performed by famous
personalities including Lokesh Gupte, Sanjay Narvekar
and Sharvari Lohkare. Thanks to the play team and MMA

since 2014 and MF is able
to do outreach to the
young generation.

Maharashtra Foundation & Maharashtra Mandal Chicago Joint Efforts to Sow the Seeds for Sustainable Social/ Community Service
To contribute their resources ( time, money or ide-
as ) for the Social/Community Service of their choice,
where they can not only witness the efforts but also
be part of its success. The next step is to expand this
outreach to the Midwest region (Illinois, Indiana,
Michigan, Iowa & Wisconsin) and lay the foundation
for serving the society – locally (the community we
live- in) and/or back in Maharashtra (the community
we love).

In the summer of 2015, I
reached out to a charity
Doorstep Schools (DSS)
in Pune, India. They are
dedicated to helping
underprivileged children
in India gain
opportunities of
education that would
otherwise be impossible
for them to obtain.
Many of these kids are
the children of
construction workers
and day laborers. They have no permanent home,
difficult living conditions, and often surrounded by
hazards of the construction sites. Because of what DSS
does, these kids are able to attend a school, and in most
cases, the first generation in their families to be literate.
Not only does DSS give these children educational
opportunities, but also draws them out of hazardous
work environments, ensuring their safety. DSS has
temporary schools set up on job sites, well trained
teachers, and even a mobile school on wheels that goes
to these kids if necessary. DSS has developed their own
teaching materials, and aids that are tailored to these
kids’ learning abilities, and also geared towards keeping
them and their parents interested in staying in school.
I was very interested in working with the charity, since I
love teaching children, and I felt that teaching these
children would be a great way for me to get my
“teaching fix”, while also helping children who needed it
the most. I volunteered about 35 hours of my time with
them, at one of their community centers, during which I
worked one on one with many students to help them
with their homework, or teach them difficult concepts
they did not understand in school. It really put into
perspective some things I used to take for granted,
namely my education. These children did not have basic
things such as a permanent school campus, playground,
pencils, books, or even desks. Here in San Diego, I am
fortunate enough to have all this and much more, like
access to labs and scientific equipment. After returning
home, I thought about how much I loved working with
the charity, and how much impact they had on the
community. Although I was back in the United States
and could not directly help Doorstep in terms of
volunteering, the impact Doorstep had on the
community and my overall outlook of the world stayed
with me, prompting me to think of ways I could help the
organization. I realized that fundraising would be the
easiest and most impactful way to help DSS, especially in
the US, as 1 USD is equivalent to about 65 INR.
contributions made here would be amplified due to the
high exchange rate. I began to talk to various
organizations in an effort to A Doorstep really
exemplified the tenets, made me feel like they weren’t
just a sequence of words. coordinate a fundraiser. I
decided to work with my Karate school, Family Karate, as
they have also had a huge impact on me, especially
through the seven central tenets: Courtesy, Integrity,
Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit. These
tenets have really become a way of life. I felt like helping
any contributions made here would be amplified due to
the high exchange rate. Again, although I could not help
physically, a monetary contribution would be very
important. There is no shortage of manpower in India.
The real problem is financial. By donating this money to
Doorstep, they would be able to hire the necessary
manpower. With this in mind, I began to talk to various
organizations in an effort to coordinate a fundraiser. I
decided to work with my Karate school, Family Karate, as
they have also had a huge impact on me, especially
through the seven central tenets: Courtesy, Integrity,
Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit. These
tenets have really become a way of life. About once
every quarter, Family Karate host an event called a Break
-A-Thon, during which members of the school come to
break simple wooden boards and show off their cool
moves. It also provides a forum for them to donate
money to a selected charity, in this case, Doorstep. I was
very excited to be able to continue helping Doorstep,

despite not being there physically. People from every
age group were there, having fun and supporting a good
cause. After the second day, my instructor informed me
that we had raised a shocking 1000 USD! I want to
personally thank Family Karate, and all the donors for all
their consideration and kind donations. I would also like
to give special thanks to Maharashtra Foundation for
helping me relay the funds, and explaining the process
clearly and simply, avoiding the bureaucratic procedures
generally associated with these kinds of donations.
Overall, the fundraiser was extremely successful,
convincing me that even though I was not in India, I
could still do my part to help Doorstep Schools to offer
these children an opportunity to improve their future
and family’s quality of life through education.

Volunteering – One of the best ways to help Society
Charity – Giving back to the society always seemed like
a later thing, rather than a now thing, until I was intro-
duced to a few “Not for Profit” organizations in New
Jersey amongst my own Asian Indian community.
Though some work on cultural platform while others
work on social platform, the concept remains the same,
helping society. Thus with that principle, I was inducted
as a “Board of Director” for Marathi Vishwa, NJ which is
a “Not for Profit” organization in cultural events, with
many members. The lifelong dedicated volunteers of
Marathi Vishwa who put in their time and energy in a
noble cause of giving preserving and promoting our
culture share equally with the board in the success of
MV. As I gained experience as a volunteer, I heard
about Maharashtra Foundation. Through my cultural
activities of a progressive theatre group, I got to know
Maharashtra Foundation and its activities and teams
more closely, which further interested me in Maha-
rashtra Foundation. While doing the theatre show
“JJAM” taken by Maharashtra Foundation,
I felt I could contribute through our performances and
help as a volunteer. My request was well received by
the President and VP, and in June 2016, I was inducted
as a volunteer in Maharashtra Foundation. It was an
honor to be a part of the Annual fundraiser in NJ in No-
vember 2016. We hosted the screening of the movie
“ASTU”. Dr. Mohan Agashe, Producer/Director of the
movie, spoke to the youth of Charlotte regarding his
high regards for Maharashtra Foundation. At both these
events we were able to create interest and have more
people, including youngsters joining in as volunteers to
Maharashtra Foundation. I hope to be successful in
lighting the torch in the young generation of today.
