Dear Friends
As one year ends and a new one begins let us, as
a Church, make 2020 the year of opportunity and
new beginnings.
Many people think about making New Year’s
Resolutions with the idea of doing something
different, or starting something new, or even
stopping doing something! Many know that
even before the end of the first week of 2020
their enthusiasm will have waned and for this
reason some folk don’t even bother making a list.
We can all have good intentions at any time of
the year but again, how long do they last?
As a fellowship there will be many challenges facing us in this New Year and
the best thing for us to do is to allow God to guide us and enable us, but He is
waiting for our total co-operation. In Isaiah chapter 43, verse 19, it says “See
I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up. Do you not perceive it? I am
making a way in the wilderness” and in verse 21 “The people I formed for
Myself, they may proclaim My praise”.
We move forward into a New Year in the knowledge that God is with us in all
we do. May our prayer be
“Day by day, day by day,
O, dear Lord, three things I pray:
to see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly,
follow thee more nearly, day by day”.
(Prayer of St Richard of Chichester 1197-1253)
May this New Year bring new opportunities to serve our Lord and Saviour.
With God’s richest blessing
Keith Scott

WELCOME TO OUR NEW FAMILY WORKER
We are very pleased that Gerda Reid has agreed to become our new Family
Worker and officially started her duties on 1st November. Gerda, who is
married to John and has two young girls, Anna and Cate, will be familiar to
many of you from her involvement with Bookbugs, Birlin Bairns, Holiday
Club and Messy Church. Gerda has amazing storytelling skills, is very good
with children and will be a huge asset to St Vigeans. In her spare time, of
which I think she has very little, she enjoys salsa dancing, reading and
watching Frasier!

MESSY CHURCH
Once again Messy Church was a big success due to the hard work and
dedication of all those who give so willingly of their time and talents. The
St Vigeans members are supported in the work by our friends whom we
worked with at Knox’s as well as other volunteers from out with the church.
Without their help it would be very difficult to continue this valuable work
of spreading the Gospel.
Please come along to our next Messy Church in January and see the
wonderful work that our team do with Mums, Dads, Grandads, Grannies,
children and anyone else who is interested in stories, craft, songs, games,
prayers, lunch and great fun and fellowship.

Just Donate
BT have withdrawn the Just Donate facility. If anyone wants to pay the
church for anything or make a donation, you can send a cheque made
payable to St Vigeans Church or contact the treasurer who will be happy
to give details of the church’s bank account for a direct payment.
Many Thanks

Volunteers Introductory Training has been arranged for Saturday
1st February 10am -1pm in St Vigeans Hall.
The Church of Scotland has made it compulsory for everyone that has a PVG
to complete this training so I would encourage everyone who has not done
the training to attend for this. The training events don't happen very often and
it will be unlikely to be held at St Vigeans again for a while so it would be
good if as many people who need to do the training to meet their conditions
of the PVG ,attend this date.
If anyone may be thinking of helping out on a voluntary basis in the near
future but has not a PVG certificate yet, please do come along and get the
training done anyway and we can get the PVG done later. Please give names
to Helen Rosie.
Tea/coffee will be available and if anyone is able to help with this then
please could you let me know.
Thanks, Helen

TODDLERS
All is going well at Toddlers with some children still on the waiting list. We
had fun at our Christmas party when Santa paid us a visit and gave presents
of books to the children. We are pleased to continue a close relationship
with the friends we made at Knox’s toddlers’ group. Our first session in the
New Year will be on 23rd January when we look forward to seeing new paint
work in the hall.
See more on the “Toddlers at St Vigeans” Facebook Page.

SUNDAY FUN CLUB
Our faithful group of children enjoyed presenting the story of Jesus’ birth on
the Sunday before Christmas to the congregation. They are looking forward
to sending money raised in their alternative Christmas Card Appeal to one of
their favourite charities “Send a Cow.” During their time at Fun Club they
have learned about how this charity makes life changing gifts to families in
developing parts of the world. Their Christmas outing was great fun. They
enjoyed a film at Chalmers Cinema.

BOOK BAIRNS AND BIRLING BAIRNS
At Book Bairns we have lots of fun sharing stories, songs and rhymes,
helping to give children a head start in life! It holds many wonderful
benefits such as building up confidence and social skills and will give their
speech and language development a real boost. Stimulating their
imagination will also encourage children to draw and write.
After Book Bairns, Margaret Cargill and I offer something completely
unique, Birling Bairns. Birling Bairns is Scottish Folk Dancing for young
children. We teach and dance simplified versions of traditional dances to
traditional Scottish music. The children learn rhythm, counting and
musicality through fun and dancing.
Our sessions are every Tuesday (during term time) in the St.Vigeans Church
Hall
9:30am - 10:30am Book Bairns
10:30am - 10:45am Break/Snack time (Please bring a snack for the little
ones, tea/coffee and biscuits are provided)
10:45am - 11:15am Birling Bairns
Please come along and join us, the more the merrier. We look forward to
seeing you there!
Thank you to all our current attendees. You make every week a joy and a
very special thank you to Nancy Robbie who always prepares and tidies the
hall for us and for providing us with cozy cups of tea or coffee and delicious
biscuits and to Margaret Cargill, my Dancing partner in crime. Wouldn't be
able to do it without you lovely ladies. Love you loads!
"Book and Birling Bairns' first day back after the Festive period will be
Tuesday the 21st of January 2020. We very much look forward to
welcoming you all back in the new year!"

To the staff and congregation of St Vigean’s Church
Dear all
Re: Christmas Present Donations to Barnardo’s Angus
I write to thank you and the congregation of St Vigean’s Church for very generously giving so many Christmas presents for the children and young people who use our services.
Your generosity, as always, is greatly appreciated. It will help lessen some of the worries that our parents face at this time of year and will certainly help make the children smile! In these difficult times, finding the extra money for Christmas on top of the food shop etc, can feel very daunting for parents and carers so the kindness shown by yourselves will help reduce some of that. We are really grateful that you continue to show such a commitment to the children and families of Angus by the contributions you make to our charity.
It is through such kindness and consideration shown by members of our local communities that we can help make a difference to the children and families of Angus.
Once again please accept our sincere thanks and warm wishes for the festive season. Best wishes for Christmas and we hope you have a peaceful and joyous New Year.
Yours sincerely
Claire Wilson

THE GUILD
The session started off with a most interesting talk from our Locum Minister,
Mr Keith Scott. The topic was “Changes”. Firstly he spoke on all the
changes to the shops in the High Street over the years. (Needless to say there
was a lot of reminiscing) then he talked about the changes in his life. In
October we had a chocolate demonstration by Heather Kelly. This is a hobby
and her daytime job is a Theatre Nurse at Ninewells Hospital and also she
goes on the Mercy Ships. At our November Meeting, Sandra Ramsay from
the charity “Reach Across” gave an informative talk on this charity which
helps people with mental issues.
We start off the next half of the session on 20th January when Mrs Margaret
Wynne will teach us Chair Exercises and on 17th February Mrs Mo Morrison
is to talk on the RNLI.
World Day of Prayer is in our Church Hall on Friday, 6th March at 2.30 pm.
A joyous Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.
Jean Duncan
BE CREATIVE
Since Be Creative started on the 23rd of October I am pleased to say that it is
proving to be a very popular group. Some people have been learning crochet
or patchwork and have been asked by the Care Homes to make Twiddle
Muffs for people with dementia, we would be delighted to accept any odd
balls of wool that are surplus to your requirements.
We get together every second Wednesday in
the Session Room at 7pm and our meetings
in 2020 are on 8th & 22nd January,5th& 19th
February and 4th& 18th March

THE CONGREGATIONAL BOARD
CORRESPONDENCE
1. Margaret read a Thank You card from Shona, our last Family Worker.
2. Margaret read the letter acknowledging the receipt of £265.79 donated to the Cyclone Idai Appeal.
3. E-mail from Heather Lockhart thanking everyone for cards & flowers she received and also for everyone’s kindness & support after the death of her mother
4. Rev Phillips advised that it has been agreed to appoint Gerda Reid as our Family Worker. The job description has been updated and an hourly rate has been agreed (not minuted) for 5 hours per week. Obviously references still need to be checked but it was agreed by the Board that she was ideal for the position.
ANY OTHER BUSINESS
Gertrud raised the issue of door duty. Some people are covering two months per year and others only one. It was suggested that the number of people on door duty be reduced from 4 to 3 per month to lessen the burden. It was agreed.
Date of next meeting Wednesday 13th November 2019.
The meeting closed with the Benediction.

One Christmas a big department store put up this notice.
The value of a smile: It costs nothing but creates much. It enriches those who
receive it, without impoverishing those who give it. It happens in a flash and
the memory of it can last forever. None of us are so rich that we can get along
without it and none so poor but are richer for its benefits. It creates happiness
in the home, fosters good will in business and strengthens friendship. It is rest
to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad and natures best
antidote for trouble. Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen, for
it is no earthly good until it is given away.
If in the last minute rush of Christmas buying, some of our salespeople should
be too tired to give you a smile, may we ask you to leave one of yours, for
nobody needs a smile so much as those who have none left to give.
O God of power and might
All good things belong to you
Sow in our hearts the love of your name
And make us grow in the life of faith
Nurture the things that are good
And tend them with your loving care
Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of
the Holy Spirit, one God world without end.
Amen
May peace, hope and joy be with you at Christmas and throughout the coming
year.
Every Blessing

PRAYER CORNER
THE CONGREGATIONAL BOARD
5. Margaret also mentioned that the electricity costs of the hall, office and session rooms – has increased by approximately £150 to July 2019 compared to 2018. This was to be expected with the increased use. Gertrud asked whether the church rooms would be eligible for the Church of Scotland scheme – Margaret will check who our supplier is. Manse: 1. William Lawrie will be moving out shortly but as previously advised 2 wooden gates require replacing. Quotation from Cameron’s to supply & fit internal gates, which match current features, will cost £695+VAT. William also advised that the steps are dangerous and metal handrails need to be installed. Cameron’s quote for these is £225+ VAT. It was agreed that these works could go ahead. 2. A shower screen is required in the main bathroom. William is obtaining quotes from WH Dorwards. 3. General painting & carpet cleaning will be required once William moves out. 4. It was agreed that we need to upkeep the standard of the Manse in order to justify the rent. Social and Community: Nothing to report. Stewardship 1. Minutes from meeting on 10th September have been circulated and are attached to these minutes. Rev Phillips invited questions. 2. William Lawrie advised that the Piano Club has arranged a Joseph Long concert on 8th March. Gertrud suggested that we should increase the size of the event, sell tickets and share the proceeds. William, Gertrud and Helen are involved in arranging this. 3. Easter weekend is 10th -13th April in 2020. Margaret Pullar advised that the coffee morning would be held on Saturday 4th April at the Old and Abbey Hall. Margaret will book the hall. Agreed. Bulletin & Communication 1. Veronika Ruskova, our bulletin editor, did a fantastic job on the last issue. It was agreed that we should revert to publishing every 2 months rather than every 3 as it’s difficult to plan 3 months in advance. Veronika is happy to do this but articles should be submitted 3 weeks before publication. This was agreed. 2. Presentations on Sunday – Jim, Sandra and Fraser have agreed to help Andrew. 3. Church Copyright Licences – Currently these licences cost £450-£500 per year. Margaret Pullar advised that we have to log all of the hymns used on the screens or printed for the Sunday services and Messy Church. There is a backlog to be entered, but once up to date Margaret will ask Sheila Milroy if she would log it weekly. Another issue that may arise is that the number of concerts is restricted to 6 per year under these licences which may include Piano club etc. Margaret will investigate further. 4. Margaret asked whether there would be any volunteers wishing to assist Myra with posting events/news on Facebook as Heather is too busy. No volunteers came forward. Rev Phillips to speak with Myra to see who currently updates the page.

The Congregational Board met on the 25th September 2019. Present: Rev Peter Phillips (Interim Moderator), 16 Elders and 5 Board Members. The Rev. Phillips welcomed members and constituted the meeting with prayer. MINUTES: The minutes of the meetings held on 5th June 2019 and 17th July 2019 were approved and signed. INTERIM MODERATOR’S UPDATE: Rev.Phillips said he had nothing to add this time and questions were invited. No points were raised. TREASURER’S REPORT Fraser Bews, Treasurer, advised members of the following: 1. Figures to 31/8/19 - compared to 2018 Open Plate £2,655 -£862 Freewill £10,270 +£875 Gift Aid £13,118 +£9 Income is looking good this year, overall we are up by £22 on last year’s figures. 2. We have claimed the tax back on the Gift Aid. This year was £8,831 compared to £8,433 last year. 3. Expenditure to 31st August is £49,850 compared to £45,950 last year so an increase of £3,900, although we have spent £2,500 on the feasibility study. 4. Fraser explained the current state of the markets and suggested that we may like to think about our current investments. The Anderson Fund as at 31/7/19 was £121,833 which has recovered from last year’s £107,580. 5. Margaret advised the Board that May Shepherd’s family donated £200 to the church after her death. May always donated flowers to the Church and it was suggested to set up a Flower Fund with this money which would make life easier for Rosie Burnett, our Flower Convenor. This was agreed. COMMITTEE REPORTS Hall: William Lawrie stepped in on behalf of Mike O’Donnell as he was unable to attend. 1. Drains/Hall/Septic tank & Path – Engineers are currently working on these but they are incredibly busy. Mike is awaiting reports. William advised that the sub-group will meet next week. Rev Phillips advised that the Presbytery has given the required permissions for the required septic tank work. 2. There is water ingress into the church above the door to the vestry which is running down the walls. Des has obtained quote to remove slates and repair the damage underneath. Cuthills quote is £2,250 but 2 more quotes being obtained. 3. Hall windows – we need to look at replacing the outdated window protection. Mike has had 2 contractors to inspect and is currently awaiting estimates. He has also contacted Angus Council to check that there are no restrictions on any work carried out. 4. Margaret Pullar advised that estimates have been received to paint the small hall, entrance hallway and toilets. John Gillan quoted £2,350, and 2 others received were £3,400 & £3,250 although one of these had significantly less work quoted for. It was agreed to go with John Gillan.
