EDITORIAL PROFILES
PAUL MERRILL EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Paul Merrill is Australia’s Editor of the Year, taking out the top award at the 2016 Australian Magazine Awards for leading Take 5 to one of its best years yet. He’s been editor of UK magazine Chat and founded ZOO in Britain, then launched ZOO here. Since then he has edited Ralph, FHM, NW and New Woman before joining Take5 as Editor-in-Chief in 2013.Paul has led the magazine to great success, achieving the highest market share growth of any weekly magazine and drastically expanding the brand’s output. He has given Take5 a total revamp, making it brighter, bolder and more interactive, with every section given a fresh new look. Paul has also spearheaded a range of hugely-successful community initiatives, from Take 5’s award-winning Brave Kids awards to anti-domestic violence campaigns.
KATE KIRSTEN DEPUTY EDITOR
Kate Kirsten is proud to have been Take5’s Deputy Editor for the past 13 years and has worked in real-life journalism for much of her 24-year career. She got her break as a cadet reporter at The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph newspapers in Sydney. Since then, her experience has ranged from national media at The Australian newspaper to local papers, plus working online and TV at news.com.au and Channel 10, then to magazines, first at Pacific Magazines as Senior Editor of That’s Life, then joining Bauer in 2005. As Deputy Editor, Kate uses her unique insight into what drives everyday Australians to bring campaigns and competitions to life, making them interactive and engaging and delivering strong results for the brand and its clients.
JANINE DONOVAN FASHION & BEAUTY EDITOR
Janine Donovan has been a fashion expert on some of Australia’s highest-selling magazines for more than 20 years. As Take5’s Fashion and Beauty Editor, she’s the trusted expert readers turn to for advice on everything from looking great for less to taking years off their appearance with the right haircare, skincare and make-up. Janine profiles the best new beauty products and gives readers the chance to road-test them, in typical, interactive Take5 style. Janine works closely with fashion and beauty brands to showcase their latest offerings to readers in a friendly, engaging, down-to-earth way – both through the magazine, in television segments and via popular video ‘how to’ tutorials, delivering excellent results for clients.

Sharina is Australia’s best known and most popular psychic – and has been sharing her insights with Take5 readers in her weekly column for the past 10 years. She has one of Australia’s longest-running radio programs, hosting a weekly nationally-syndicated psychic show on Radio 2UE since 1990. Sharina appears regularly on a range of television programs, from Today to Studio 10 and some of her predictions have been so accurate they have made news headlines. Sharina has released a range of bestselling books, boasts a host of celebrity clients and her live shows around the nation attract crowds in the thousands each year.

Take5 is proud to feature Australia’s best real-life stories. The campaign culminates in an awards ceremony featuring celebrity judges and guests, attracting nationwide prime time television news coverage.
TAKE5 SEARCH FOR A COVER STAR
This ground-breaking editorial initiative offers readers the chance to experience the ultimate accolade 0f being the magazine’s featured cover model. In Take5’s uniquely interactive style, readers nominate and then vote for the new face of the magazine. The competition attracted a huge response from the launch year, with around 1000 nominations from across Australia and 19,000 phone and SMS votes to decide the winner. Past recipients have shared wonderful true stories, ranging from a hard-working Queensland nurse and mum to a girl who overcame obesity and bullying and was thrilled at this honour.
TAKE5 BAKE AND DECORATE COMPETITION
This fun and interactive competition gives everyday Aussies the chance to feel like a celeb chef and show off their cake decorating skills. Entrants send us their recipe and photos of their best kids or adults cake, including a photo of it in progress, and a celebrity judge chooses the winners. It’s been enormously successful in the magazine, attracting hundreds of fabulous entries, with the winner chosen by former MasterChef winner Kate Bracks.
