here’s nothing like colour to bring life back to our outdoor spaces – and doing that with flair starts with imagination.T
TRENDY GARDENSare adding lots ofCOLOUR this year
RELAX AND LET THE PLANTS DO THE WORK
Have you always wanted to start gardening but just can’t seem to keep your plants alive? Fear not, more and more new gardeners are learning that you don’t have to spend hours a day to impress your backyard guests. Try low maintenance annuals like PC Gigantico Selosia Dragon’s Breath to spice up your planters. Or, if you love to garden but aren’t sure about plant arrangement, try pre-planted garden mixes. It’ll take the guess work out of gardening but still result in planters and baskets that are perfectly colour coordinated.
COLOUR ME GREEN
Forget the white picket fence; the ever growing trend of backyard colour is moving beyond the garden and into backyard structures. Fences and sheds are trending towards darker colours like navies, blacks and dark forest greens. If you’re planning on doing some outdoor building, or giving the fence a quick coat of paint, think about these colours that are sure to give your outdoor space a modern feel. ›››
How do you envision the beauty of your property this summer, be it the patio, the deck, your terrace, or the entire backyard? Picturing it and making a plan is an important first step, so to help jump start this process, let’s consult a specialist on the topic. Peter Cantley, a gardening expert for the President’s Choice brand, has put together his list of the biggest gardening trends at the moment, bound to put you in the mood for your spades and trowels:
BRIGHT BEGONIAS
Nothing says summer like brilliant colours and again this year, gardeners are looking to have their outdoor spaces dazzle with different shades and hues. Many have already dubbed 2016 “The Year of the Begonia” as this bright annual is winning fans across both Canada and the United States. It’s not just traditional begonias that people are talking about however. The newest varieties are loaded with colours and bred to enjoy the sun and shade. They’re prefect to liven up any area of your garden.

FOOD GARDENS
Lastly, a trend that’s becoming even more of a “movement” in the past few years is growing your own food. Whether its fresh herbs on the windowsill or planters and gardens filled with new and exciting varieties of exotic berries, growing our own food has never been more on trend. Planting edibles is an exciting opportunity to learn about new and different varieties of fruits and veggies so don’t be afraid to experiment this season. Or for something truly unique, try the PC Ketchup and Fries, a unique tomato grafted onto a potato plant. Who knew that you can grow tomatoes and potatoes on the same plant? It’s just another exciting step in the world of gardening.
SMALL SPACES, BIG IDEAS
It’s no secret that urban Canadians are moving into smaller spaces. Downtown condo buildings are on the rise and there’s no room for a backyard when you’re living on the 40th floor. Amazingly, condo dwellers aren’t letting their high-rise spaces prevent them from enjoying beautiful potted plants. Low-maintenance tropical plants and terrace-friendly succulents can make any condo or apartment balcony a delightful place to be.

GLUTEN-FREECOOKING
NutritionistTIPS for
As the name suggests, being gluten free means following a diet free of this mixture of proteins present in many cereal grains - especially wheat, barley and rye. People often go gluten free because digesting it causes discomfort, particularly for those who suffer from celiac disease or gluten sensitivities.
PUMP UP THE PROTEIN
Gluten-free products often contain less protein and more carbohydrates per serving which can leave the stomach less than satisfied and may lead to over eating. To keep you feeling both full and fueled, complement gluten free meals with a good amount of protein for a winning combination.
For the more than 330,000 Canadians believed to be affected by celiac disease and gluten intolerance, eating gluten free isn’t a choice, but a necessity. And finding the right foods to eat and recipes to cook can be a challenge.
Hubert Cormier, nutritionist and author, offers three simple tips for cooking nutritious, gluten free meals.
SWAP IN SUBSTITUTES
Just because you’re eating gluten free doesn’t mean you can’t still have your favourite comfort foods like bread, cakes and pasta. There are lots of wheat substitutes available for making your most-loved recipes gluten free. Catelli’s Gluten Free pasta line is made with a unique blend of white and brown rice, corn and quinoa, and is a great example of a delicious alternative to traditional wheat-based pasta.
MIND YOUR VITAMINS
Did you know that if you have celiac disease, your calcium and vitamin D intake is reduced? This can increase your risk of vitamin deficiency and developing osteoporosis. You can address this issue by including foods in your diet that are rich in calcium and vitamin D such as dairy products, tofu, canned fish and cabbage. ›››

“You can either let a different family member choose a new activity each week, or you can do the same activity all season. Whichever you choose, it is important to make sure you are wearing appropriate footwear,” says Kevin Fraser, president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada and a certified pedorthist.
Activity specific footwear increases comfort, maximizes enjoyment and helps to prevent injuries. Although old running shoes may seem like a good choice for a family hike as it won’t matter if they get dirty or wet, hiking shoes are an important investment if you’ll be regularly hitting the trails. Hiking shoes provide extra ankle support for uneven terrain as well as extra cushioning and shock absorption. They also dry quickly.
Old running shoes are not a good choice for any activity. Running shoes break down over time and when they are old they do not provide adequate shock absorption or stability which can result in painful lower leg and foot injuries. Although running shoes aren’t stamped with a best before date, they do expire. If you’ve had your running shoes for more than one year they should be replaced. ›››
It doesn’t matter what activity you choose as long as all family members are able to participate,”says Kevin Fraser.
“
etting a regular night for a family dinner is a great way to stay connected. However, if you and your children are spending too much time on screens, scheduling a weekly family physical activity is an equally effective way to bond and also get in some much needed exercise.

Equally important to wearing activity-specific footwear is to make sure all family members are wearing the correct size. Although it is tempting to pass sports shoes down from one child to the next, it is not advisable as the shoes won’t fit properly. Also everyone has different biomechanics so the wear patterns from one child won’t match the wear patterns of the next. As children’s feet grow rapidly you should have them professionally measured every few months to see if they require new shoes.
