June 9, 1996: Linus Torvalds puts version 2.0 of the Linux kernel on official FTP servers. With this version Linux starts running on non-Intel architectures. On the very same day the Linux penguin Tux (designed by Larry Ewing) became the official logo.

In June 1991 the BSD derivate Net/2 is released. Completely new develo-ped C library and system tools make it independent from AT&T Code for the first time. Later, 386/BSD and Net BSD evolved from Net/2.

February 1990: IBM publishes the Advanced Interactive Executive (AIX) Operating System.

February 1999: For the first time IBM announces support for Linux operating systems. Shortly after the company became one of the biggest contributors to Linux. Today Big Blue’s investment and engage-ment are seen as a major step in Linux history, probably the most im-portant one that paved the way into business league for the free OS.
