Lift for the local economy Cold Ashby Golf Club featured on page 34 of The Times
on January 14th with an half page photograph extolling
the entrepreneurial initiative of installing a temporary ski
lift on the fair-

Novel use for Guilsborough’s phone box? BT are planning to remove the phone box from
the High Street in Guilsborough, and the Parish
Council are hoping to adopt it, but they need to
show what it will be used for. One suggestion
from Village Link reader, Teresa Woodman
from Hollowell, is that they follow an idea from
villagers in Somerset, when Westbury-sub-
Mendip (pictured) transformed a phone box
they bought off BT for £1 into a library and
book exchange. What do you think of this idea,
or have you got an alternative suggested use?
Visit the website www.villagelink.org.uk and
give your suggestions, or write to Glanville Hart
at the address on the back page.

Variable Messaging Signs on the A5199 Welford Road
(Approaching Creaton from Welford)
Creaton Parish Council has just had confirmation from Northants County Council that a Variable Messaging sign has been approved for this road. This is to slow traffic down and make drivers aware (at certain times of day) that they are approaching an area with
a School and at other times of the day to make drivers aware that they need to slow down. In addition, subject to funding, NCC has indi-cated that they are committed to changing the existing Zebra Crossing to a Pedestrian Controlled Crossing. If you have any queries
or questions about either of these two initiatives please do not hesitate to contact Lynne Compton, Clerk, Creaton Parish Council, Tel No

SMALL TURNOUT
FOR CREATON LITTER PICK
on Sat 21st Nov 2009 It was a very cold Saturday morning, but a few stalwarts turned out to tidy up our village. Our thanks go to; Michael Montgomery, Caroline Pugh, Stan Perrins, Bob Osborn, Reg Thomas, Cathy Perrins with Adam, Olly and Ella, and Linda Toombs who made the effort. Again our very special thanks go to Chris Patching and Karen Vessey, who did an excellent job in the “Knicknacks”. As always there were the usual types of litter; beer cans, bot-tles and fag packets, however, there were two unusual finds; one, a stash of credit card which went straight to the Police, and the other was a purple bra - which no one has yet claimed! The Parish Council has arranged another litter pick for 20th March and it is hoped that all those people who like to see Creaton looking at its best will turn out to help.
SALT/GRIT BINS
An Urgent Message
Just a reminder that these are for use only on the public high-ways eg Footpaths and Roads. Please do not use them for private driveways. Thank you.
We have requested a further grit bin for Grooms Lane but unfortunately we will not find out until April 2010 if the re-quest has been granted – as always subject to funding.
NEW CEMETERY NOTICEBOARD
Thanks to Bob Osborn for the newly revitalised noticeboard.

DA/2009/0860 Retrospective planning application for erec-tion of a pole barn, land at Brixworth Road, Creaton
Parish Council resolved to make the following observations:-
―we would like to point out that there is an inaccuracy on the appli-cation, which states on the last page that the site cannot be seen from the public road; this is untrue as it is plainly visible.
In addition, we have received one anonymous letter complaining that the construction is in open countryside and the person is con-cerned about the addition of a lorry container placed close to the road next to the telegraph pole.”

BRIXWORTH OSTEOPATHIC CLINIC
2 CHURCH STREET
01604 889241
Osteopaths can be thought of as human mechanics.
With 4 years full-time training, we are specialists in
understanding how the various parts of the body
work together. Many people think we only treat back
pain and sciatica, but in fact we treat the entire body
– muscular strains, trapped nerves, shoulder, elbow,
hip, knee and foot pain, headaches, neck injuries
etc.
Brixworth Osteopathic Clinic opened in 2000 and
supports three Osteopaths, offering over 20 years
experience. Cranial Osteopathy is available at the
clinic and is a particularly effective form of treatment
for babies who have difficulty feeding, sleeping or
who may be suffering with colic.
Initial consultations cost £42 and follow up appoint-ments cost £38. Patients typically achieve 90%
relief of symptoms within 3-5 sessions. We re-ceive many patients through GP referral and as members of the General Osteopathic Council, we
are accepted by all major insurance companies. For further professional advice, or to make an appoint-ment, please contact us at the above number. Our
telephone is answered between 8.30am and 6pm
every weekday.

lowing recommendations from

GUILSBOROUGH NEWS
Thank you to all those who generously sup-
ported the ARC Coffee Morning with Christ-
mas in Mind in November 2009. The takings
for the morning amounted to about £1,100.
A really splendid outcome and our grateful
thanks go to Louise Metcalfe who kindly
provided her home for the event.
Artificial Flowers Going Missing
We’ve got a bit of a mystery in
Guilsborough’s Church Yard. It appears that one grave keeps having the artificial flowers removed and although under current guidelines from
Peterborough they aren’t really permitted, it seems strange that they keep disappearing from just the one grave.
Has anyone any ideas where they are going? It has been suggested that maybe an animal has a nicely decorated den somewhere but the
family concerned would dearly like to know so if you’ve any information as to what is happening to them please contact one of the editorial team.
Details are on the back page.
News from Guilsborough CEVA
Primary School
We staged two Christmas productions in December,
Shepherds Delight performed by Key Stage One and
Rock Around Christmas by Key Stage Two. We are
very grateful to Guilsborough Parish Council for the
grant they gave us to pay for the licence and perform-
ing rights. Pictures appeared in the Daventry Express,
Chronicle & Echo and the Harborough Mail.
We did not go to the pantomime this year but in-
stead decided to have a visiting theatre group per-
form Hansel and Gretel to the whole school. The
children enjoyed cheering and heckling, and especially
singing the pop songs.
On the 18 th of December, we held a Christingle Ser-
vice in the school half in aid of the Church of England
Children's Society. We had planned to hold it at St
Etheldreda's but the snow forced us to remain at
school. However, many of our parents made great
efforts to get to school to join us and the children
loved lighting their Christingles and eating the sweets!
The vicar also had the children spellbound with his
plasma lamp during his address.
Our Dress Down Days continue to raise funds for
National charities. Last term we collected a total of
£725.17.

Guilsborough Sixth Formers’ Coffee
Morning
A good cup of coffee with biscuits, accompa-
nied by one of the school’s solo musicians was
enjoyed by some of Guilsborough’s residents
recently.
The event was to support a project by Sixth
Formers of the school to monitor younger
pupils and help them with difficulties. Funds are
needed to supply such things as games and
refreshments to create a relaxed atmosphere
between Monitor and Subject. To this end a
raffle was run and the writer of this won two
very acceptable prizes and enjoyed the
morning.
It is to be hoped the young people will do it
again and will get more support; so please
come along next time.

GUILSBOROUGH NEWS
Local Firefighters Quest to
climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
Guilsborough Firefighters Mark Hazle and Staci Leach are taking the
challenge in February 2011 to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
They are raising money for a charity that is close to their hearts, The
Fire Fighters Charity. This charity aims to provide both excellent facilities and an unparalled service for Fire-
fighters who have been injured in service.
Every year, thousands of Firefighters are injured whilst protecting the public. Every 30 seconds in the UK
Firefighters are called to an incident, putting their lives on the line and often sustaining physical injuries
whilst carrying out their duties. The Firefighters Charity is here for Firefighters during their times of need, and
assists over 17,500 individuals every year in one of their 3 UK centres located in Cumbria, Devon and West
Sussex.
It costs over £9 million every year to keep the charity running, and with no government funding, the charity
is completely reliant upon donations and fundraising, so your support is very much needed.
In order to achieve their goal they need to raise as much money as possible and have set their target at
£6500. You can help them by donating through their JustGiving page (see address below); the collection
tins which are sited in the local pubs, shops and businesses or by offering prizes for their
‘Auction of Promises’ which will be held on Saturday 8th May at Guilsborough Village Hall.
If you can offer any form of help to the pair, whether it be giving of prizes for the Auction and Raffle or spon-
sorship of equipment for the challenge they will be more than happy to hear from you. They can be con-
tacted on the numbers below:
Mark Hazle - 01604 743348 Staci Leach - 01604 740319 Or email: stark_kilitrip@yahoo.com

Hand Bell Ringing at Guilsborough The guides rang carols on the hand bells for the Fam-
ily Service on 13th December and for the Carol Ser-
vice on 20th December. They had begun practicing at
the beginning of October tutored by Merrick Bowles
and Julie Woolley. Their hard work resulted in excel-
lent performances enjoyed by all who attended the
services. Well done Guides.
The picture shows from left to right: Alice Osborne,
Emily Garrett, Merrick Bowles, Freddie Cranfield,
Talia Warren. Loren Osborne, Natalie Williams and
Isobel King. Participants not in the picture were
Pauline Jacobs, Guide Leader and Alice Berry.

Gardeners’ Question Time Evening
Thursday 1st April 2010
7.00 pm -10.30 pm
Guilsborough Village Hall
This is your chance to ask the panel that question you’ve always wanted answered.
The Green Welly Show, BBC Radio Northampton’s highly popular gardening pro-
gramme, chaired by Johnnie Amos, is to be recorded in Guilsborough and broadcast
the following Sunday from 12:00-14:00hrs.
The Panel consists of:
Nick Warliker: Head gardener to the late Princess Alice of Gloucester & horticultural columnist in the
Evening Telegraph for 25 years, judges shows and gardening events including Shrewsbury and Sandringham.
Phylip Statner: Head Gardener of Cottesbrooke Hall near Creaton . Studied Horticulture at Askham
Bryan College, worked for prestigious private residences and large Estates from Aberdeenshire to London,
including the American Ambassador’s residence on Regents Park. He has travelled widely, exploring the
plants and gardens through Asia and worked for several months at the Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens in
Cape Town South Africa. He has also worked at Daylesford Gardens where he was in charge of the organic
glass houses, and assisted in the floral displays with Lady Bamford.
Kathy Brown: Journalist and garden designer from Stevington Bedfordshire, where the 4.5 acre Manor
House gardens include a famous topiary garden of a 12 man jury.
Susie Pasley-Tyler: Gardener and designer of Coton Manor gardens, which came third last year in the
UK’s top favourite gardens.
The recording starts at 19:30hrs with a break after 45 minutes, when refreshments are served, followed by
70 minutes of further questions. Those with questions need to contact the organisers in advance. Any ques-
tion can be asked, the choice is yours, but some tips. Some questions frequently crop up and so it is best to
avoid our ―hardy annuals‖ or slug and snail control and pests on indoor plants. However that leaves a lot of
scope, and questions that introduce humour are especially welcome. You are encouraged to bring along a
sample,-the more unusual or exotic the better. The knowledgeable team has wide experience of all types of
gardens; large and small, country and town, landscaping, planning and design, water gardens, vegetables and
fruit, show blooms & greenhouses-a really good chance to solve your problems. The teams will not have
prior knowledge of the questions, the first they know of the question is when you come to the front to ask
it.
Tickets from organisers: Gay Webster 740203 or Graham Byars 740545. Cost £4.00.
Licensed bar and refreshments available.

Carol Singing A group of us sang carols around the village on the evening of Tuesday Dec 15th. Many
thanks to everyone who came along to sing, fed and watered us as we sang and most im-
portantly donated money. We collected £150 for the Night Shelter in Northampton. The
shelter provides accommodation for single homeless people and is the only direct access
hostel in the county.
GRANDPA’S DREAM
A new children’s book has been written by Christine Surl from
Guilsborough and beautifully illustrated by Betty Stains of Long Buckby. Feedback from the
many sales since its availability in late November suggests that children, parents and grandpar-
ents are enjoying the true story. It shows the relationship be-tween a boy and his Grandpa
and their dreams.
―Grandpa’s Dream‖ is available
at Seatons & Tracys in Guils-borough and at Waterstones in Market Harborough and

CHURCH NEWS
Letter from the Vicarage Lent begins on Ash Wednesday which, this year, will be on Wednesday February 18th. There will be a traditional service of "Ashing" and Holy Communion at Spratton Church at 7.30pm. The ash reminds us of Job in the Old Testament whose faith was tested many times and who, the Bible tells us, lamented "in sackcloth and Ashes".
The Church has traditionally made a song and dance about "giving things up" for Lent but the emphasis in today's Church is to take something on for Lent. This year we shall be, as we began doing last year, inviting people to "take on" some Bible Study. Now please don't stop reading thinking it will be boring, boring. Come along to one and give it a try. We shall be meeting in the Guilsborough Surgery from 7.30pm on Tuesday evenings and the first will be February, Tuesday the 23rd. We prom-ise to be finished by 9pm. We shall be considering the miracles of Jesus as told in the Gospel accord-ing to St. John. Trust me - it will be an eye opener and it will be very entertaining.
At the other end of the penitential season we are hoping to put on a devotional service on the evening of Good Friday at 6pm in Guilsborough Church. Seasonal Readings and Passiontide Hymns with, I hope, a couple of items from The Choir too (subject to confirmation). Of course, everyone is welcome to any and all of the above services and events.
Finally please look carefully at the service rota for Easter Day Service Times. Some are slightly differ-ent but it is the best we can do with so few clergy and eight services!
Michael Petitt
In February, the church organ will dis-appear for a few weeks to be com-pletely renovated. This is good news and, as reported in an earlier edition of Village Link, is due to the many peo-ple who have contributed so gener-ously in many ways over the past two or so years in raising funds towards this renovation. So if you walk into the church during the next few weeks and see a large gap in the wall where you would expect to see an organ, do not be alarmed! The Organ Builders assure me that it will be back in time for Easter.
Peter Collins Ltd: the Organ Builders engaged to undertake the work, will

WINDFARM UPDATE from Mark Brennan
Firstly I would like to thank everybody who has helped to date with their time,
door knocking on 12th December, their expertise in Planning, Legal and En-
gineering issues. As a result of our "Door knocking" we were able to deliver
135 letters of Objection to Daventry District Council. We have also followed
this up with an Engineers' report that states as part of its comments that
“It is therefore very likely that damage would occur if heavy, abnormal
loads are allowed to use Nortoft" .
The Report has been sent to both Daventry District Council and the High-
ways department of Northampton County Council, we await their response.
Chris Millar our District Councillor has also become actively involved on our
behalf in support of our objections to the traffic travelling along Nortoft and
the West Haddon road. We have also recently been informed that the pro-
posed planning application has now been postponed by the developers from
January to March or April 2010. If anybody has any further ideas please
don't hesitate to contact me at: marksbrennan@hotmail.com.
