The Liberty LeaderTown of Liberty Electronic Disposal Reminder:In 2009 the Town of Liberty was informed by Randolph County that all electronics were no longer accepted in the weekly landfill route. All electronics must be recycled and not put on the side of the road to prevent contamination of the ground water from the metals inside the electronics. The Town of Liberty does not accept electronic devices such as televisions, computers, computer monitors, cameras and radios. Please, do not place electronics on the side of the road or on vacant properties. Individual property owners can take them to the Randolph County Landfill and place them in the assigned location to be recycled. The Town, in conjunction with Randolph County, held an electronics recycling event at Americhem in 2014 and we are planning for another in the near future. We will provide the information as soon as everything is arranged. The Town apologizes for any inconvenience.Trash Pick-upLiberty provides for Town-wide solid waste/garbage pickup via contract services once a week on Tuesdays. Blue trash containers are to be placed at curb for pickup every Tuesday. Any overflow trash that will not fit into the blue container should be left on top of the "open" container, not on the ground beside the container. Large items, and metal items for disposal, should be left at the curb outside of container, for separate pickup. *Blue trash containers should be removed from the curb every Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning* Don't forget: Batteries, paints or volatile liquids, and tires should be taken to the designated recycle center, not deposited in the blue container. Town Trash StoryCont From Page 1In 2009, the North Carolina General Assembly has established a ban on a wide range of materials from going into NC landfills. Items such as plastic bottles, glass jars, aluminum cans, papers, magazines, flattened cardboard, phone books, oil filters, motor oil and tires (The Solid Waste Facility accepts more than 5 tires with a properly executed NC Scrap Tire Certification) may be discarded at the Randolph County Recycling Center at 428 W. Brower Ave. in Liberty. Contact Number 336-218-4607 The Town also offers a curbside pickup of white goods, everything from carpet remnants to freezers, on Tuesdays. We normally remove and dispose of 2.5 tons of landfill material for our residents each week. If you place more than 2 large items or a large pile of smaller items out then there will be a charge for it.A Note About Curb Pickup Of Additional Rubbish: It is, and has been, a practice for your Public Works Department to pick up residential rubbish that will not fit into your Blue container when it is placed at the curb on Tuesdays. Please bear in mind that excessive discard such as a tenant move-out, or a major load in excess of a "small" pickup truck load requires an additional charge of approximately $120 to $160 depending on the size and quantity. The additional rubbish will not be removed until this fee is paid at Town Hall. We must do this in order to keep your Monthly Trash Fee at the lowest possible cost. We very much appreciate your cooperation.

“The Billy Graham of his day” preached in Liberty in 1902 Story Courtesy Of Patterson Cottage MuseumSaturday, September 27, 1902 was a special day in Liberty. Samuel Porter Jones, “the Billy Graham of his day” had come to town to lecture at the Liberty Normal College, undoubtedly drawing one of the largest crowds the town had ever seen.We may never have known that Jones spoke in Liberty had it not been for Margaret Hemphill of Julian who donated a poster advertising the lecture to the Patterson Cottage Museum.Samuel P. Jones was born in Alabama in 1847 and moved with his family to Cartersville, GA at an early age. Despite having seven Methodist ministers in his family, he became a lawyer, but his problems with alcohol soon ruined his career. In 1872 his dying father asked him to promise to quit drinking, a promise Jones mostly kept the rest of his life. Soon afterwards he experienced a religious conversion that convinced him to enter the ministry. As a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, Jones soon gained a national reputation. By 1890, he was, with the exception of Dwight Moody, the most famous preacher in America. He preached and lectured from New York to California. In five weeks in Chicago he preached to a quarter of a million people. His most famous convert (although he preached to Teddy Roosevelt) was riverboat entrepreneur Tom Ryman. Ryman came to one of Jones’ 1885 services in Nashville with friends, solely to heckle the preacher. But Ryman was convertedand enthusiastically offered to construct an auditorium where Jones and other ministers could hold revivals. Named at first Ryman’s Union Gospel Tabernacle, the building later became the Ryman Auditorium, home of the Grand Ole Opry. The year after Nashville, Jones preached, by his estimate, 1,000 sermons to 3 million people around the country. His style was said to be “humorous and crude, high-strung and theatrical—not at all what many people expected from a preacher”. He had a home-spun delivery, and was said to have influenced Will Rogers. One of his most famous sermons was entitled simply “Quit your meanness.” In 1902 he was touring the state of North Carolina and is known to have preached in Wilmington, Rockingham, Wilkesboro, Kinston, Durham, Charlotte and, of course, Liberty. On September 24, three days before he rode the train into Liberty, the Wilmington “Messenger” called him “the most unique lecturer and original philosopher on the American platform today.” Admission to his lecture at Rockingham was fifty cents, with reserved seats going for seventy-five. After lecturing at Liberty Normal College (which stood where Liberty Elementary does today) Jones more than likely preached the next day at the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, across the street from the school, where the Liberty First Methodist now stands. The Alamance “Gleaner” of Graham, reported that “quite a crowd went over to Liberty Saturday to hear the Rev. Sam P. Jones lecture….he also preached Sunday. His text was from Joshua…’choose ye this day whom ye may serve’. Quite a large crowd went out on Sunday from this place…” In 1906, while returning home from a revival in Oklahoma City, Jones suddenly collapsed and died, a day before turning 59. Over 30,000 people came to view him as he lay in state in the rotunda of the Atlanta Capitol. The framed poster donated by Margaret Hemphill shows a photo of Jones sitting in a huge ornate chair. Underneath, hand written in fine calligraphy is “Will lecture at Liberty under the auspices of the Liberty
Normal College, Sept. 27, 1902 at 3:30 p.m.”* * * * * * Don’t forget to save the date, Saturday, September 19, at the Patterson Cottage for the museum’s annual Heritage Festival. There will be crafts demonstrations, basket making, weaving, blacksmithing, a Civil War encampment and much more. Activities start at 10:00 and are free to the public.
