Management Systems as the Classroom
Jonnathan Busko, MD, MPH, FACEPAssistant Professor, Arts and Sciences
Maine Maritime Academy
Outcomes Objectives
• By the end of this session, the participant will be able to:– Define learning management system (LMS)– List at least 3 positive features of an LMS for an
educator– List at least 3 positive features of an LMS for a
student– Explain ways in which an LMS fosters intra- and
inter-organizational collaboration
Conflict of Interest
• Nope.
Learning Management System
• Formal– A software application to deliver, document,
administer, track, and report on e-learning educational courses or training programs
• Practical– A method for managing the content delivery and
educational interactions between the educator and the learner
Canvas
• A learning management system– Cloud based– Remote access– Instituted selectively Fall 2013 at MMA– Instituted campus wide Fall 2014
Canvas and Me: A Match Made in Registration
• Hired spring 2013– MD310: Medical Care Provider– MD311: Medical PIC
• Historically taught traditional format– MD310: 2 sessions MWF 1 hr / day and 1 session
3 hr evening– MD311: 1 session 3 hr evening
What I Promised
• Fall 2013– MD310: 1 traditional, 2 hybrid classes• Hybrid = 1 asynchrnous on-line class and 2 classroom
meetings / week
– MD311: 1 traditional class• Spring 2014– MD310: 1 traditional, 2 hybrid classes– MD311: 1 hybrid class• Hybrid = 1 hour asynchronous didactics and 2 hours in
the classroom
What Does it Look Like?
My (mostly) Positive Experience
• Inventing Time• Unlimited production budget• Prep time? • Out with the old, in with the new
How To Invent Time
• Overlapping classes– MD310 A: M/W/F 1300-1350– MD310 B: M/W 1100-1150, 1 hour anytime– MD310 C: W/F 1100-1150, 1 hour anytime
• Excused absences– All material (including lectures) in Canvas
• Snow days– Non-existent
The “Unlimited” Production Budget
• Multi-million dollar educational tools on-line• LMS allows collection of access in one place• LMS allows access synchronized with
sequence of education
Prep Time
• Build the content• Organize the content• Copy the content…
Presto Change-o
• My approach to video and my intellectual property
• Every item its own line item• Whoops, that didn’t work…
Collaboration
• Intra-organizational– PSY-xxx: Risk, Error and Survival• Multidisciplinary course
– Math, psychology, history, casualty analysis, marine transportation, physical educaton…
• Intra-LMS collaboration– Each professor sees what everyone else is teaching in one
place– Lecturers delivering only a single lecture
» On-line only with in-class collaborator clarifying
• Etc, etc…
Collaboration
• Inter-organizational– What classes doesn’t your institution offer?• Could institutions share specialists?
– Collaborative courses• Everyone has a best lecture they love to give• Could you build a multi-organizational course with
everyone’s best lectures?
