Let’s Make a Whiteboard Animation!

Materials

• whiteboard

• markers

• eraser or wiping cloth

• Macbook with iMovie

• Storyboard plan and script

Set Up

• Place Macbook approximately 2-3 ft away from whiteboard with screen facing the whiteboard.

• Activate iMovie.

• Open iMovie in your Application folder. Select File>New Event.  

• Save event as “Whiteboard”.

• Keep the event highlighted and select File>New Project.

• Choose “No Theme”.

• Enter hour_username_whiteboard in the name box.

• Click Create in the lower right hand corner.

Record Images

• Choose the camera icon on the left.

• A camera screen will open like in Photo Booth.

• Draw a frame on the whiteboard to frame in what shows on Camera screen.

• Click capture to begin recording.

• Draw the object you want your audience to see.

• Click stop when you are finished drawing.

• Clips will appear in the event space of iMovie.

• You can do this in short bits or one long one and edit it later.

• If you have long periods of no drawing it will be best to stop recording and restart.

Remove Audio• Select a clip in the

iMovie events box.

• Drag entire clip into the project space.  

•Repeat the process for each clip.

• Select each clip and Clip>Detach Audio.

• Delete all the purple audio clips.

• To delete the clips, highlight them and hit the delete.

Speed Up Drawings

• Select clip, or portion of the clip, that you want to speed up.  

• Next, Clip>FastForward>Select speed.

• Try 8x first. Say YES to optimizing question,  

• You can adjust the speed later if necessary.

• Be ready with your Script.

• Click on Microphone icon to record a voiceover.

• Then click on the spot on your project clip to begin the voiceover.

• Recording instantly begins after you click on the clip after a 3, 2, 1 countdown.
