Lesson 112 & 3 Commandments

Review:

1-3 4-10

1. At Mt. Sinai, God gave the written law to the: Jews.2. Given on what? Number of? Applying how?

The 2nd Commandment

God’s Name is like the name / number of 911.

Love for God’s name

Look closely at the key pads: each number also has letters so someone can dial a number or a name!

If my phone number is:738-6453 I could tell people to reach me by dialing my name, Rev. Mike.7 3 8 - 6 4 5 3 R e v - M i k eNames and numbers can be synonymous!

Agree / Disagree:“When someone dials 911 he is using a name to get a vast array of help.”

Agree / Disagree:“If someone wants emergency help, then he needs to know and believe that 911 is the name to call on.”

Agree / Disagree:“Relying on the name or number of 722 is just as good as calling up 911.”

To call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ is similar to calling the number 911.

Why?

What kind of help does calling on 911 bring…?

All the help, power, salvation and teachings that God reveals to us about himself.

What is God’s name?

Do not use God’s name carelessly, uselessly or for evil purposes.

What God’s people don’t want to do

What if a teacher taught her students that calling up 911 was “stupid”? What if the teacher claimed that getting help through 911 was a myth?

Similarly, when someone misuses God’s name, he teaches others that God’s name is “stupid” and that God’s promised help is a “myth.”

1. Curse (wish evil on someone)

We do not want to damage the reputation of God’s name. Examples:

2. Blaspheme (mock God)3. Swear falsely (take an oath)4. Superstitiously (trust in something other than God

5. False teaching (changing the Bible)6. Hypocrisy (pretending one thing while hiding the truth

Explain: Why is God’s name also like our nation’s flag?

2. Joyful praise and thanksgiving

What does God want to see in his people?

Cat 191)

Cat 196)

1. Sincere prayer

Turn to these passages in your Catechism book

3. Praising Jesus to others.

Cat 197)

2. Therefore we love him and his name.

Why God’s children love to use God’s name rightly

Cat 215) 1. God revealed his name to save us

3. We want others to love him.

What does this 2nd commandment teach us about this situation?

The 3rd Commandment

The 3rd Commandment

1. rest 2. Set apart for God

Love for God’s Word and Worship

Words to know

Time Line Natural Law Worship God!

Must worship the 7th day (Sabbath day) and do no work!

Sabbath specifics ended by Christ’s finished work.

Col 2:13-17 ~ Christ forgave us our sins, having canceled the written code with its regulations…Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink or withregard to aReligiousfestival or aSabbath day.

Christ’s death removed the regulations of Mt. Sinai that required worship on the Sabbath day, so we revert back to the Natural Law:

Worship God (any time)!

Natural Law Worship God!

..that we set aside time for His Word (any day; any time).

What God requires:

1. To get spiritual rest through forgiveness

(This means…)

Matt 11:28-29

1.Gospel in Word

1.Gospel in Sacrament

2. Faith in Christ = 100% Saved

3.

4. Thank-apples

Triune God

(A Christian wants to honor God’s Word…)

2. To gladly hear & learn His Word

Cat 224)

3. To assembly with fellow believers

4. To publicly worship and serve God

Cat 228)

(cont.)

Why God’s children love God’s Word and Worship.~ Cat 268)

+ Cat 274) 1. We want Christ’s spiritual rest

2. We want to grow in faith3. We want to help others4. We want to witness to others.

What does this commandment teach us about…

Getting the most out of worship?

Let’s Review how God’s commandments fit into our

spiritual lives.

Justification Sanctification(How does God judge me?) (How can I thank God?)

Thru the Law: Thru the Law:

Thru the gospel: Thru the gospel:

• a sinner, sinful• guilty; damned

• He guides me;• Points the way

• sinless, righteous• “Just-as-if-I’d”

• He empowers me;• Energizes me for

never sinned. “set apart” living.

Gospel is the foundation of salvation!
