A.K.A....subject pronouns
These refer to ONE person
• I = je (or j’ before a vowel)• You = tu (informal)
= vous (formal)• He = il• She = elle
These refer to more than one person.
• We = nous• You plural (you guys, y’all)
= vous (formal AND informal)• They = ils (refers to a group of males and
females OR a group of males)• They = elles (refers to a group of FEMALES
only)
Tu or vous? That is the question!
When talking to ONE person, French speakers have two ways of saying you:
• tu (« familiar you ») is used to talk to someone your own age (or younger) or to a member of your family
• vous (« formal you ») is used when talking to anyone else– For example: • Older people• People you don’t know well
