Energy Success

For first time, tidal-generated electricity is fed directly

into UK national grid.

• In 2006 RPS designed a

twin-pile structure,

installed at EMEC in

Orkney, which is now

operating as a test-bed

for Openhydro’s

development programme.

Summary

Don’t mix up ‘proper community engagement’ from the start with ‘simply giving information’ – Aarhus Convention is now legally binding in Ireland

Early involvement is crucial

Don’t underestimate the ability of stakeholders to understand issues

Use trusted third party sources for information

Keep issues local and be inclusive

Go back to stakeholders showing them where they had influence

rpsgroup.com/ireland

Summary

We need

Better security of supply – diversification of energy

sources;

Combat climate change effects by increasing

renewables in all energy mixes;

Recognise the challenge of renewables on and

offshore in planning, environmental, regulatory,

competitive and geopolitical terms
