About us
The Berkshire School of English (BSE) was founded in 2015 as the ‘One Stop English Shop’ to work with individuals, their families, schools, and businesses throughout Berkshire to improve English skills.
Native-speakers can choose a gentle return to learning with ‘Kick Start Adult Literacy’ plus
GCSE exam preparation workshops for teenagers who need extra support.
Adult Non-native speakers/ESOL learners can choose to learn English through a
variety of courses. For example: General English, Cambridge exam preparation and employability skills. Students can also explore British culture through history, politics and understanding the social and cultural diversity that they are presented with when living and working in the UK today. (See page 7 for our ‘Regular Courses’ or contact us for more details.)
Our Staff BSE is staffed by highly qualified, specialist English language teachers with many years’ experience delivering Functional Skills from pre-entry to Level Two, GCSE English and EFL/ESOL from beginners to advanced learners .
Not only have we worked with non-native speakers, we have worked with native English speaking vulnerable adults in FE colleges and with ex-offenders within the Probation Service.
Working in Partnership We are proud to be a member of the West Berkshire Community Learning Partnership. Over the last three years we have worked with West Berkshire Council Adult Community Learning and West Berkshire Family Hubs to successfully establish four funded ESOL courses located in Calcot, Thatcham, Newbury and Lambourn. These courses will continue in 2018-2019 along with two new courses at BSE: ‘Kick Start Adult Literacy’ and ESOL/FCE Laser Progression Award in Literacy and Employability. We also provide intensive English courses to newly arrived Syrian Refugees as part of the Government’s Syrian Refugee Resettlement Programme and we have courses focusing on ‘Citizenship and the Community’ for ethnic minority learners.

Accredited Learning and EFL Exam Preparation At Berkshire School of English we strive for our students to reach their full potential and understand that they often need accredited recognition for their learning. BSE is a ‘Recognised Centre for Laser Learning Awards’. This means all of our courses can be formally accredited.
BSE is also a Cambridge Examination Preparation Centre for Cambridge First Certificate (FCE), Cambridge Advanced (CAE) and the International English Language Test (IELTS)
GCSE English Revision and Preparation Classes We know that private one-to-one tutoring can be very expensive and out of reach for many students who really need help. Studying in a group of motivated students can be extremely rewarding and bring equally excellent results for our GCSE students.
§ Preparation for the reading exams (fiction and non-fiction) § Creative writing § Analysing poetry and prose § Writing for a purpose
Aimed at students from Year 9 to Year 11

KICK START ADULT LITERACY
‘Kick Start Adult Literacy’ is designed for low level literacy learners who are looking for a route back into education and or feel unable to attend larger FE colleges or training providers for a variety of reasons. The course is designed as a roll-on, roll-off workshop to run throughout the academic year. Learners can join the course at any time and are expected to attend a minimum of 12 sessions and work towards Laser Learning Progression Awards in English. The course provides the starting point for learners wishing to re-engage with reading and writing to improve health and wellbeing, re-connect with learning, gain employment and prepare for progression to formal courses.
ESOL/FCE LASER PROGRESSION AWARD IN LITERACY AND EMPLOYABILITY
An accredited progression course aimed at B2 – C1 learners
Designed for learners to achieve bite-sized English and Employability awards during the academic year that can contribute to certificate level or even a diploma depending on the number of credits they achieve. The awards are delivered in 6 parts over the academic year.
The content of the course also prepares learners for the Cambridge First Certificate Exam, an internationally recognised qualification, accepted by thousands of employers and educational institutions. Topics are up-to-date with a real focus on literacy and employability skills. This makes a perfect fit with Laser Learning Awards in Progression.
The FCE exam cannot be taken at the Berkshire School of English and learners will need to enrol independently with an approved testing centre.
