For more than 20 years, SMPS HQ has hosted an annual event for incoming chapter presidents: the Presidents’ Leadership Symposium. In 2020, we enhanced the program to provide training for both incoming chapter presidents and chapter program leads.

This premier event focuses on developing the leadership skills of chapter board leaders and ensuring an awareness of the resources available to chapters through SMPS HQ.

For 2021, all CLS sessions will be made available on-demand to all chapter volunteers following CLS.

Chapter leaders have several roles in their terms and positions. They need to balance the steady management of core activities with the need to identify and support opportunities to ensure the chapter continues to serve its members.

This session aims to support chapter leaders in responding to and initiating change—and the importance of transition management with volunteers. It will present three frameworks for change management with practical examples that reflect the realities of chapter leadership and growth. Our presenter will discuss board and volunteer succession, continuous improvement, and new change initiatives.

Successful volunteer leaders must be able to lead and facilitate meetings and conversations that result in shared priorities, goals, and group synergy. Building this kind of broad consensus can be a difficult proposition when there’s a plethora of competing opinions, perspectives, agendas, and personalities. Managing these critical conversations requires specific facilitation and communication skills and techniques—especially in a virtual setting.

Jon Hockman brings more than two decades of consulting experience with hundreds of associations in the U.S. and abroad to his leadership of McKinley Advisors’ Chicago office. A specialist in facilitating communication, Jon has aided clients in strategic planning, team/group efficacy, change management, organizational culture/climate, and leadership development.

Prior to joining McKinley, Jon founded the d3 Group, a successful consultancy focused on strengthening associations. He also served as a partner of KRW International, the CEO of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity and was a major gifts fundraiser for both the American University and the Children’s Defense Fund.

Peter HoustleCEO, MARINER MANAGEMENT & MARKETING

Peter Houstle is CEO and co-founder of Mariner Management & Marketing, an association management company providing full management services to small associations and counsel to global associations seeking to improve member communities and volunteer development. He serves as executive director for several clients including a state trade association, the Maryland Recycling Network, and provides a variety of management consulting services to others.

He is a frequent, well-rated speaker at ASAE conferences on a variety of topics including volunteer & leadership development, component relations, facilitation and performance management. He has also presented a number of webinars for clients and association industry firms on similar topics.

Peter has over three decades senior-level association management experience and earned his MBA from University of Maryland’s Robert Smith School of Business concentrating in organizational development and a BA in Music from Ithaca College.

About Mariner

Peter and his partner, Peggy Hoffman, have conducted research on the key success elements for association chapters and have built the Chapter Dashboard Indicators Tool, featured in the American Society of Association Executives’ Component Relations Handbook and in the Component Relations online course. Additionally, they have conducted research on the Chapter of the Future, written a white paper on the subject and publish the association community’s only chapter benchmarking studies, 2016 Chapter Benchmarking Report and 2019 Chapter Benchmarking Report.

Following up on questions raised in the benchmarking study, Mariner launched the Chapter ROI Project which seeks to identify a defensible ROI and rational business model for

chapter support – an area very few associations have explored. They also developed and co-sponsor the association industry’s only conference on chapters, Component Exchange and through this developed a report on the Evolution of Chapters which examines how associations are rethinking models.

The Mariner team also participated in a key project for the American Society of Association Executives, “Rebuilding the Volunteer Spirit,” one of ASAE’s inaugural Innovation Projects, which explored how associations can adapt to and build on the changing volunteer. It was a catalyst for rethinking our governance and member engagement models. This work led to co-authoring a white paper on the “Mission Driven Volunteer” which looks at the new volunteer and how membership organizations are adapting. In 2017, the team completed work for the ASAE Foundation on a groundbreaking study on Achieving Mutually Beneficial Volunteering Relationships for membership organizations.

These projects, combined with the team’s extensive experience in senior-level association management have provided the foundation for Mariner’s numerous speaking engagements and consulting work with hundreds of association clients over the past two decades.
