Mies urbanism revisited

The McCormick Tribune Campus Center seeks to reinvigorate the urbanism inherent – but long since neglected – in Mies van der Rohe's 1940 masterplan for the Illinois Institute of Technology. The large single-storey Campus Center provides a focal point for the previously sundered halves of the campus, and features a noise-absorbing steel tube wrapping the Elevated metro that runs directly over the building and, inside, a dense mosaic of programs including a bookstore, food court, café, auditorium, computer centre, and meeting spaces.

Koolhaas’ interior layout for the building was inspired by pre-existing footpaths that criss-crossed under the train tracks, formed by students walking back and forth between residence halls and classroom buildings on the IIT Main Campus during the past 70 years.

On the Toni-Areal a former milk-processing factory is to be transformed into a platform for education, culture and living. Within the urban development of the district and within the transition of Switzerland’s university landscape the Toni-Areal represents a central building block. We assume that this is primarily an urban planning and a programmatic problem. Our design proposes tackling this sizable project – a built structure almost the size of an entire neighbourhood – with a kind of inner urbanism. On the outside the existing system of ramps is read as a vertical boulevard and reinterpreted as the main circulation. Inside, inner addresses are created that locate individual functions like buildings in the city. To create an open framework we work with different degrees of precision, scales and tonalities and with a range extending from huge public spaces to intimate private ones. The building as city, the city as building.

Concept model, 1:500

The structure of the building reflected the highly complex production system.

When the Toni factory opened in 1977 it was regarded as Europe’s most modern milk factory.

Only 22 years later milk processing at this location was discontinued and the production plant was sold to Eastern Europe.
