Background Information

In 1835 the old wooden stairway was replaced by an iron one, also known as the breakneck steps

Located in the heart of Quebec city, these old steps have been around

since 1635

The stairs descend to du petit Champlain

Architecture

• 1893 design by city architect and engineer Charles Baillairgé

There are 170 total steps built on the original 17th century stairway that linked the Upper Town and Lower Town. There are various shops and restaurants on different levels of the stairs
