Main Features of SealMaster™ Patented StemSeal Arrangement• “Multiple” sealings up to 6 areas (see Views 1-6) for

pressure and high vacuum.• Encapsulated “Static” sealing achieved on upper thrust

seal.• Constant sealing force reflects to stem (see arrows “A”)

and makes stem primary sealing “Positive.”• Excellent wear resistance on lower thrust seal (50%

SS filled PTFE), 1000 times greater than that of PTFEto prolong the compensation of Belleville washers.

Stem Sealing

SealMaster™

V-ringStem Packing

BellevilleWashers

Our extremely high cycle stem sealing design is accomplishedby a double sealing system. The high performance of KTM ballvalves is mainly due to the unique Sealmaster™ stem sealarrangement, which provides primary sealing. It has beenspecially designed and constructed to prevent line fluidpermeation and resultant leakage. On top of this arrangementare multiple layers of V-ring stem packing, which act assecondary sealing. A set of Belleville washers automatically andconstantly compresses the seals to adjust for wear, pressureand temperature fluctuations. Every KTM ball valve is a stalwartbarrier against fugitive emissions.

Stem Sealing Details

A

B

C

The live-loaded SealMaster™ is a combination of threecomponents: (A) a cup and cone PFA/TFE upper thrust seal;(B) a cup and cone sintered stainless steel 316 center load ring, and (C) a flat stainless steel/TFE lower thrust seal. Whentightened, the live loaded stem pulls up, compressing the stemthrust seal. As this happens, material from upper and lower thrust seal extrudes between stem and body enclosures (seeViews 1-6). The surfaces between the bottom of the lower thrustseal and top of the stem flange are smooth and all rotationoccurs between these two surfaces, leaving the stem thrust seal“static” to create the best possible seal. As rotation continues, components bed in and keep seal performance constant withusage. As operating wear takes place, the stem thrust seal canbe re-tightened to recommended torques multiple times.

Omni I Split Body Floating Ball Valve - EO100/SB11 Full Bore

A proprietary micro-space designdramatically reduces reactivebuildup.A frequent problem in processingproducts ranging from reactivemonomers such as styrene andbutadiene to starches and slurries is thatthey can, and do, build up - andpolymerize or ferment - within the“cavities” or open spaces inside thevalves controlling the process.Until now the response to this problemhas been to fill the cavities with PFA,FEP or another “foreign” material.A more complete solution is KTM’s newNoFill valve. As its name implies, theNoFill uses no filling material of anykind. Instead, the cavity has beencompletely eliminated — except for themicro-space required for ball movement(shown here in red). Depending uponthe valve size, that micro-space rangesfrom 0.5 to 1.0 millimeter. All wettedsurfaces are stainless steel, polished toa mirror finish. This new technology from KTM issuperior because:• The micro-space severely restricts the

area where product can collect andbuild up over time.

• The mirror-finished interior drasticallyreduces the potential for bonding.

• There is no excess material to flakeoff with wear and cause productcontamination.

• Solidification of media is much moremanageable, should a severe processchange occur.

• The stainless steel interior lasts muchlonger, resulting in less down-time.This, plus easy maintenance, translates to a lower total cost ofownership.

Applications• Styrene• Butadiene• Methylene chloride• Starches• Slurries• Food processing• Fermentation• Pharmaceuticals

More Reasons to Choose KTM’s NoFillThe KTM NoFill features a bi-directionalfloating design with maximum Cv valuesthat provide minimal pressure dropthrough the valve. The NoFill’s spherical-shaped seatsensure 360° sealing. The seat itself isKTM’s E-seat, a unique molecularly-enhanced copolymer of PTFE and PFA.This strong, low-permeability materialprovides chemical resistance to reactivemonomers. In high temperatureoperations, the seat remains white, eliminating the risk of colorcontamination associated with seatsmade from darker reinforced materials. For abrasive processes, the NoFill isalso available with metal seats. The NoFill valve comes in two-way andY-pattern diverter configurations.

Burned Seat

Ball Lip

Choose from three soft seat materials:The standard E-Seat PTFE/PFAcopolymer, PEEK and PTFE. Each typeof seat is retained in the same manner, with the valve body machined with aprotective lip designed to eliminate seatdeformation and cold flow. This same lipacts as a secondary back-up seal, which forms a metal-to-metal contact inthe event the primary soft seal isdestroyed in a fire. The E-Seat offers process purity, strength, integrity, low permeability andhigh resiliency. It is composed of aunique molecularly enhanced copolymerof PTFE and PFA. It offers a full range ofproperties formerly requiring twoseparate materials. The E-seat providespressure and temperature capabilities

previously available only with glass orcarbon fiber-reinforced PTFE. In high-temperature operations, the seatremains white, eliminating the risk ofcolor contamination associated withseats made from darker reinforcedmaterials. The E-seat is excellent on awide variety of applications but isparticularly recommended for use onstyrene and butadiene, where lowpermeability is a performance factor;and on low-pressure steam, whereflaking of virgin PTFE is a problem. It isalso recommended for use on food andbeverage, pharmaceutical and biotech, paper, clean gas and any otherapplications where product purity andthe lack of foreign fillers are critical tosuccess.

The photograph to the right shows avirgin PTFE seat after attack by areactive monomers (in this case, styrene). The material’s molecular matrixhas been penetrated by uninhibitedmonomers due to vapor pressure, allowing a polymeric reaction to takeplace. Commonly called “popcornpolymerization,” this reaction can totallydestroy seat material.

In the second photograph, you can seethe results of a field test of the E-seatcopolymer by KTM. Using butadiene, generally considered the worst-casescenario due to its small molecular size, the test ran for two years at 120 psi and180°F. The seats experienced minimumdistortion and, after the two-year period, did not leak in service. Pressure testsafter removal, at 1.1 times design, alsoshowed no seat leakage. The photoshows two of the seats tested and forcomparison, a new seat is shown in theforeground.

This graph (right) showspressure/temperature ratings of thethree seat materials with a full bore of 3and 4 inches and a reduced bore of 4inches. The E-seat providescharacteristics identical to the carbon-filled material, while retaining its purewhite color. The same is true at fullbores ranging from 1/2 to 8 inches andreduced bores of 1/2 to 10 inches.

KTM’s PTFE/PFA copolymer E-seatoffers the protection from colorcontamination as with virgin PTFE seats– but, unlike virgin PTFE, it offers equalor better strength, integrity, permeabilityand resiliency previously associatedonly with reinforced PTFE.

Transflow valves allow the operator to channel the pressure from the failed safety valve to the standby valve without shutting down the system. The faulty valve can then be replaced.

Change flow from one process to another. Delivery of media from multiple storageareas. Delivery of multiple feedstocks to storage.

For temperature control, blending of media or balancing of flow rates.

Addition or removal of media from a system.

Allows maintenance or calibration without system shutdown.“R” represents any meter, pump, transducer, instrumentation, etc.

Allows maintenance on equipment that must remain in the system.Allows two pieces of equipment to be used simultaneously.

Inherently 3-Way valves alone cannot be fire-safe because their multiport design does not allow them to shut off. 3-Way valves are available with fire-safe gaskets and gland packing. A fire-tested system can be achieved by applying the 3-Way with Omni II fire-tested (API 607 Rev. 4 and EXES 3-14-1-21) on two ports. An “L” port or a “T” port 3-Way could be applied.

The standard E-Seat PTFE/PFAcopolymer is retained in the body by amachined protective lip designed toeliminate seat deformation and coldflow. This same lip acts as a secondaryback-up seal, which forms a metal-to-metal contact in the event the primarysoft seal is destroyed in a fire. The E-Seat offers process purity, strength, integrity, low permeability andhigh resiliency. It is composed of aunique molecularly enhanced copolymerof PTFE and PFA. It offers a full range ofproperties formerly requiring twoseparate materials. The E-seat providespressure and temperature capabilitiespreviously available only with glass or

carbon fiber-reinforced PTFE. It isalso recommended for use on food andbeverage, pharmaceutical and biotech, paper, clean gas and any otherapplications where product purity andthe lack of foreign fillers are critical tothe success.

KTM’s PTFE/PFA copolymer E-seatoffers the protection from colorcontamination as with virgin PTFE seats – but, unlike virgin PTFE, it offersequal or better strength, integrity, permeability and resiliency previouslyassociated only with reinforced PTFE.

Trunnion Mounted Ball Valves - Production EO1100 Full Bore and EO8100 Reduced Bore

KTM ball valves have been widely usedin low temperature and cryogenicapplications, including LNG (LiquefiedNatural Gas) which is fast becoming abetter alternative source of energy. Witha proven design and after manysuccessful references, the KTM brandname continues to be preferred by end-users as the process quality ball valve ofchoice.

Features• Extension bonnet protects the gland

packing. Two types of extensionbonnet (short and long) are availableto better locate the “Gland Packing” atambient temperature zone. This willprotect it from freeze-damage causedby low temperature fluid.

• Cavity pressure relief.• Excellent seat and seal design

minimizes leakage.• Low operating torque for smoother

operations.• Fire safe design.• Fugitive emission compliance.• Rigid body construction minimizes

thermal shrinkage.

Standards• ASME B16.34, B16.5• BS 6755, BS 6364 (Valves for

cryogenic service)• Shell MESC 77/306• CE marking (PED) 97/23/EC

Special Tests• Liquid penetrant test• PMI test• X-ray test• Pressure test at low temperature

General Applications • Propane -44°F• Ethane -128°F• Ethylene -155°F• Methane -260°F• Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) -260°F• Oxygen -297°F• Nitrogen -320°F

Features• Rotary-valve design provides shearing

action between the V-notch ball and theseat, promoting a smooth, non-cloggingoperation.

• Straight-through flow design provideshigh capacity for fibrous slurries, steam, liquids and gasses.

• With a single-seat design, torque islower than typical trunnion designvalves, for ease of operation andreduced actuator cost.

• Two seat designs:– Laminated seat provides Class IV

Fugitive Emissions Control PackagesAvailable for both flammable and non-flammable service.

Positive Locking, End Cap RetentionWire-ring with three point locking device assures a tight fit.

Versatile End-ConnectionThe Unibody design isavailable in flangeless orflanged construction andmeets I.S.A. S-75.04 andANSI B16.10 face-to-facedimensions.

Unique Dual-V BallA secondary (Small) V-notch allowsextremely small, accurate flow rates with the additional benefit of the primary(Large) V-ball providing straight through,non-clogging flow which, if necessary, will shear slurries and fibers.

Integral Mounting PadMachined “actuator pad” allows precise mountingof actuator. Mounting bolts are independent fromthe stem-packing gland bolts. This exact alignmentreduces torque and prevents out-of-line wear onthe stem and packing.

Unibody DesignThis proven structural design enhances piping integrity by reducing stress and additionally eliminates potential leakpaths.

Stem to Disc ConnectionA tapered pin connection is used toensure accurate control of flow, which also results in a highresolution of 250:1.

Minimum Body Cavity Reduces build-up of transitionprocess materials and thesegmented V-ball eliminatesfreeze-up.

KTM Pre-Vac Seal Ball Valves, 1/2” to 12”(full bore) are recommended for vacuumservices down to 20 microns. Whenordering, specify “Vacuum Service”. Both‘T’ and ‘G’ seats are available for vacuumservices. When KTM ball valves are for highervacuum service, the valves must bethoroughly cleaned, more preciselymachined, and subjected to a leakagetest. For high vacuum applications, please consult your Tyco representative.

Ball Valve Leakage AllowanceWhen KTM standard valves are used forvacuum service, 0.01 to 1.00 Lusec (1µ Hg/sec.) of body leakage will bedetected for sizes 1/2” to 12” (full bore).Major causes of leakage are penetrationthrough body casting of gas or steamfrom oil and water deposited oncomponents or contained in the casting.Seat leakage is negligible for actualservices.

Since KTM ball valves have inherentequal percentage flow characteristics, they are ideally suited for controlapplications over the widest possibleranger of flow. equal percentage flowcharacteristics, in simple terms, meansthat a given percentage change in thevalve opening will produce the samepercentage change in flow.

The two tables below, one for full boreand the other for reduced bore, areprovided to assist in sizing KTM ballvalves for control applications.

General InformationComposed of a unique molecularlyenhanced copolymer of PTFE and PFA,KTM’s E-seat offers a full range ofproperties formerly requiring twoseparate materials. The E-seatcopolymer provides pressure availableonly with glass fiber filament or carbon-reinforced PTFE. In high-temperatureoperations, the seat remains white, eliminating the risk of colorcontamination associated with seatsmade from darker reinforced materials.Standard in all KTM floating-style ballvalves, the E-seat is excellent on a widevariety of applications but is particularlyrecommended for use on styrene andbutadiene, where low permeability is aperformance factor; and on low-pressuresteam, where flaking of virgin PTFE is aproblem. It is also recommended for useon food and beverage, pharmaceuticaland biotech, paper, clean gas and anyother applications where product purityand the lack of foreign fillers such asglass are critical to the user.

Properties and PerformanceFigure 1 compares the performance ofthe E-seat with seats made from virginPTFE and 10-20% carbon-filled PTFE.Note that the E-seat has:• A tensile strength greater than or

comparable to the other two.• Greater compressive strength than the

others.• The least creep percentage of the

three materials, which gives it the leastdistortion that causes cold flow.

• Greater hardness (Shore Durometer)than virgin PTFE.

• The highest coefficient of linearthermal expansion, translating intobetter flexibility.

• A coefficient of wear significantly belowthat of virgin PTFE.

• A specific gravity and frictioncoefficient equal to that of virgin PTFE.

compressive creep is of such majorimportance in a valve seat, results froma wider range of temperatures areshown.

Figure 3 shows pressure/temperatureratings of the three seat materials with afull bore of 3 and 4 inches and areduced bore of 4 inches. The E-seatprovides characteristics identical to thecarbon-filled material, while retaining itspure white color. The same is true at fullbores ranging from 1/2 to 8 inches andreduced bores of 1/2 to 10 inches.

SummaryKTM’s PTFE/PFA copolymer E-seatoffers the protection from colorcontamination as with virgin PTFE seats– but, unlike virgin PTFE, it offers equal or better strength, integrity, permeability and resiliencypreviously associated only withreinforced PTFE.

Pressure/Temperature Ratings

Figure 4 shows a virgin PTFE seat afterattack by a reactive monomer (in thiscase, styrene). The material’s molecularmatrix has been penetrated due to vaporpressure by uninhibited monomer, allowing a polymeric reaction to takeplace. Commonly called “popcornpolymerization,” this reaction can totallydestroy seat material.Using butadiene – generally consideredthe worst-case scenario due to its smallmolecular size – KTM tested the E-seatcopolymer for two years as 120 psi and180°F.

The seats experienced minimumdistortion and, after the two-year period, did not leak in service. Pressure testsafter removal, at 1.1 times design, alsoshowed no leakage.Figure 5 shows two of the seats tested. For comparison, a new seat is shown inthe foreground.
