Fellow Tree of Life Congregants:
Thanks to everyone who helped with the Big Nosh. It was a great success. Our volunteers were
exceptional. There was a lot of great food and fellowship. This fundraiser showcases the Tree of
Life's greatest attributes.
This calendar year is quickly coming to an end. The congregational meeting is Tuesday, May
29th at 7:00pm at Tree of Life. Please join your fellow congregants for this important meet-
ing. Refreshments will be provided by Groucho’s Deli. At the meeting, we will be approving a
new slate of officers and voting on the 2018-2019 budget. There will be many ideas and
topics to discuss.
I am honored to serve as your President, and look forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting.
Kindly,
Bruce Miller

FROM THE RABBI
See you at the Tree,
Rabbi Eric Mollo
From the Rabbi
Dear Friends,
There is so much to talk about from these past two months and now moving into the summer.
Back in early April, Keven Cohen and Bruce Miller planned and executed an incredible festive evening
and fundraiser for our community on the Spirit of Lake Murray. Many thanks to Keven and Bruce for
their efforts and we hope to continue the tradition next year. And, while we’re on the subject of
fundraisers, the first week of May featured our annual Big Nosh Jewish culture and food festival. Many
thanks to our lead coordinator, Todd Weiss, and the many incredible volunteers who helped to make it
a great day for Tree of Life. It is always so wonderful to see what we can accomplish together. Another
such example of teamwork occurred near the end of April as part of the M.O.R.E. Justice’s Nehemiah
Action. For those who are yet unfamiliar with M.O.R.E. Justice, it is an organization that represents a
major part of the social justice and interfaith work we do in our congregation. Working across
perceived and real racial and spiritual lines, we have worked this past year with officials in our
community to improve care for the mentally ill and improve upon disciplinary standards for students in
Richland 1 and Richland 2 schools. This work in ongoing, but early returns have showed promise in
the form of Crisis Intervention Training for all police officers in Columbia and Richland County by 2021
and a commitment from Mayor Benjamin to work on establishing a Clubhouse in Columbia for those
suffering from mental illness. Thank you to our Team Leaders, Alex Ogden, Josh Gupta-Kagan, and
Amanda Hamilton for helping our community to rally around these noble causes.
Following the Big Nosh, the month of May brought with it the b’nei mitzvah of Lainie Rubin and Jake Moses. Both students led
fantastic Shabbat Morning services and I wish them and their families Mazal Tov on a job well done. We also observed Shavuot with our first
cheesecake bake-off and Talmud study which is sure to become an annual occasion as we build on the fun and success of this year’s
gathering. Mazal Tov to Jordan Henry and Philip Hawkins on their winning blood orange cheesecake. Moving into June and July we can look
forward to our ongoing Shabbat Evening services, our Friday Night Live services every second Friday of the month, and our annual Trivia
Night. Lunch and Learn will also continue at Tree of Life throughout the summer months with the exception of our session in July.

From the Education Director
KOL T.O.L.
Molly Westfall and Kate Weiss raised money and awareness for
Camp Jenny at The Big Nosh. Camp Jenny is NFTY's Southern
Area and Southern Tropical Regions' year-round mitzvah corps
project, giving children from an economically disadvantaged At-
lanta-area school the opportunity to receive tutoring and sup-
port throughout the year which then culminates in a 4-day long
camp experience at URJ’s Camp Coleman over Memorial Day
Weekend. The students receive the love of big "brothers and
sisters," three nutritious meals a day, and encouragement for
the future. They also enjoy activities such as hiking in the
mountains, water play, zip lining, arts and crafts, and a variety
of sports and team building activities.
We close out another wonderful school year at TOL, with many
thanks to our dedicated teachers, teens, students, and parents.
You make our community sacred, special, and fun! There’s no
need to go 3 months without us, however. We will have monthly
family programs throughout the summer and with the help of
some steadfast volunteers, we will finally get the rest of the Chil-
dren’s Library in order. There are a ton of summer reading pro-
grams going on throughout Columbia – stop by my office to pick
up a recommended reading list or ask for a suggestion. When you
complete a Jewish book, come by and make a Jewish beaded
bookmark to start on your next reading adventure!

Kesher Committee
WRJ / Sisterhood Brotherhood
Kesher, the Hebrew word for "connections" is also the name of a newly formed
TOL committee. This committee's goal is to strengthen connections among our
members and build a foundation that recognizes members life events,
milestones, simchas, contributions and volunteering. If you're interested in
learning more or helping the Kesher Committee, reach out to David Polen at
davepolen@gmail.com or 516-241-9892.
As we head into the summer months, I want to
take this opportunity to thank all of you who helped
the TOL Brotherhood in our service to the TOL.
During this past school year, we had many events
to support our Temple and community. Some of
these events included breakfasts and lunches for
the religious school, a holiday dinner for a youth
home, a TOL work day, and of course, our support
for The Big Nosh.
We also found some time for opportunities to just
get together as a group. We met out for dinner
twice and had a brotherhood cookout.
We are looking at a date to meet out for a
Columbia Fireflies game night over the summer,
so keep an eye for an email with information soon.
Again, thanks for all you do to support the Brother-
hood, both in time and financial support.
Eric Feuerstein
TOL Brotherhood President
On May 18th we presented our annual Sisterhood
Shabbat, coordinated and led by Rabbi Carolan.
The inspiring service recounted the stories of
strong women leaders of the Jewish people from
Torah times until now, and included meaningful
readings by a number of our WRJ members. All the
music for the evening’s service was written by
women as well.
We have recently approved our slate of officers for
fiscal 2018-2019:
President: Terry Garber Treasurer: Yuliana Zulunova Recording Secretary: Ellen Potter Corresponding Secretary: Ilene King Ways and Means: Emily Toombs, Barb Willens, Doris Davidson Programming: Laney Cohen, Elisa Westfall, Cheryl Nail Membership: Amanda Hamilton Bereavement: Annette Goldstein Gift Shop: Donna Magaro Marketing: Erica Altschul Regional representative: Amanda Hamilton After much discussion, we will be rolling out an exciting new membership model for this year, based on the value of WRJ programs and activities to each lady in the Tree of Life congregation. Stay tuned for more details coming soon! Our first event of the new year will be our annual YES Fund (Youth, Education, and Service) Brunch. Planned for Sunday August 12, 2018. Save the date, and look for your invitation!
