Although the company is named Kiremko Beijing it is a shared operation between
Tolsma Storage Technology from Emmeloord, Holland and Kiremko B.V.. Tolsma and
Kiremko use the same sales channel in China serving the same customers. The products
of Tolsma and Kiremko are complimentary and therefore we find it a logical step to
set up a joint customer support office in China. In the last decade we have supplied
a large number of potato storage and processing facilities to Chinese customers but
we were not able to support them at the same level as we are used to do in Europe
and the USA. With our new company in China we will be able to upgrade our service
to our Chinese customers.
We will not change the way we sell our equipment in China. The sales office in Beijing
will still be the main channel. The support office will assist them during sales, if
required. It will enhance our position in the market as we will be able to offer the
customers support after we have installed and commissioned new equipment.

The potato processing industry continues to prosper in these hard times and
along with our strategic partners we are well positioned to help clients to
take advantage of the opportunities that are available in our sector of the
food industry. My colleagues and I have been travelling far and wide. We have
realized projects not only at home, but as far away as New Zealand and Saudi
Arabia and we have seen significant growth in Turkey and Poland. There has
been a lot of activity in North America and Canada. One of our most loyal clients
in the USA is developing a whole new facility in Idaho and also we have seen sales
for the new NexGem® forming machine with several of the major processors.
We will continue to carry out what we do in a calm and measured way to make
sure we offer the same level of service to new and existing clients. I would like
to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for the support and for the
trust they place with us. Please find on these pages some reports on a few of
our recent projects and remember, we are here to help you in any way we can.

Shared operation in ChinaAs a result of an 18 months lasting procedure, the registration process of Kiremko Beijing is
finally approved by the Chinese authorities. This means we are able to support our customers
in China on a different level than we did before.
The staff of the new Beijing facility
will be fully Chinese. Contact with the
Chinese customers is therefore easier.
Kiremko Beijing is licensed to buy and
sell in local currency, this makes it more
convenient for our Chinese customers to
use the services offered.
With the establishment of Kiremko
Beijing we show our customers that we
will be there to support them if required
and we also prove to them that we
are there to stay providing them with
continuity.
Back in June 2011, Kiremko signed a
contract with India-based ATOP Foods of
Morbi, Gujarat for the supply of a complete
potato chips line including all our latest
innovations. Kiremko has been active in
the Indian market since the 1990’s, but
it was not until recently that opportunities
to sign such a significant contract for a
large capacity potato chips line with an
important player in the emerging Indian
snack market came along.
ATOP Foods pleased with potato chips line
Up until now, the Indian market for savoury snacks had been
dominated by a large number of newly established, small
processors spread all over the country. Kiremko was not able
to meet the demand for rather small potato chips processing
lines, often produced locally. Recently the demand came for
larger, higher capacity processing lines that offer more efficient
use of raw material and energy consumption and in this field
Kiremko has a lot to offer.
The project realized for ATOP is a direct result of the so-
called Package4Growth programme, a subsidy initiated by
the Dutch government, which led to the actual purchase of
the equipment. Package4Growth is a Dutch state facility to
help Dutch exporting companies to establish themselves in
emerging markets like China and India for projects in key
sectors such as infrastructure, environment and agro-industry.
Given the fact that Dutch technology is not always affordable
for Indian companies, the subsidy was essential to by-pass this
obstacle. The new ATOP plant will therefore act as a modern
reference to the entire snacks industry in India.
The bigger picture of this order can be
considered as a remarkable step towards
improving the bilateral relations between
the two countries in the agricultural
sector. It also demonstrates that a
collective market entry strategy leads to
substantial results. Kiremko joined two
incoming missions this year from the
Netherlands to India, including a tour
with a delegation organised by the Dutch
Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture
and Innovation as well as the Food Tech
Holland Impact Tour in March.
The latter is a consortium of highly
innovative Dutch companies supplying
food processing technology. Food Tech
Holland operates in the food sector
providing for solutions along the entire
supply chain. Particularly, the group
is focused on India and tailors its
technologies according to the needs of
the Indian market. Kiremko has been
part of Food Tech Holland since the
establishment of the group.
ATOP expressed its full satisfaction with
its new equipment and was particularly
impressed with the high quality standard
of the potato chips produced on its new
Kiremko line.

How to process sweet potatoesRecently Kiremko has seen huge interest from processors to
diversify their product portfolios. One of the most promising
newcomers are sweet potato based products. Kiremko has
identified this market opportunity already some time ago, but
has only recently delivered the first dedicated, large-scale sweet
potato processing line for a customer in China.
Despite the name, sweet potatoes (Lat. Ipomoea batatas)
in fact in botanic classification terms have little to do with
potatoes (Lat. Solanum tuberosum). Like the potato, however,
the sweet potato has its origins in South America and in
terms of production and consumption levels it is indeed
a very important root vegetable. Not only because of
its taste, but also because it is one of the most
nutritious vegetables known to man being an excellent
source of energy but also antioxidants, vitamin A,
C and potassium.
Apparently there are around 6.500 identified varieties mainly
produced in (sub) tropical areas, southern USA and China
being the largest producers in the world. Shapes vary from
round to long-conical, colours from creamy-white to orange
and even dark purple. The texture is rather more fibrous
than potatoes and also solid content fluctuates between
as low as 15% to as high as 40%. This is very much problematic
when considering sweet potatoes for industrial processing
and which is exactly the reason that it is still very much
at its infant stage. Of course, there is a lot of undeveloped
market potential to process sweet potatoes into a number
of end products, especially pre-fried frozen strips (fries),
dehydrated (flakes), frozen mash and chips.
On the back of practical experience obtained from existing
processors that were already processing sweet potatoes on
a smaller scale with our potato flakes processing lines,
Kiremko’s process engineers conducted a number of tests
for (steam) peeling, cutting, cooking and mashing the
product for a number of varieties. Generally, the raw material
presented a number of issues with respect to peeling and
cutting due to the irregular shape of the product, just as
well as the handling of the product coming from the
field or store. Especially the fibrous structure and an
effective way to remove the rather strong sprouts
posed some question marks. The existence of elevated
reducing sugar levels means cooking and frying
temperatures and retention times have to be carefully
observed. The product also tends to oxidise rather quickly.
All this experience led to specific solutions, selection of
equipment and the design of a dedicated processing line for
sweet potatoes.
When Kiremko received such an inquiry for a 2 t/h frozen
mash line from the Chinese based company Lifeng Foods,
it was quickly able to make a custom-made proposal that
convinced the client. Having been awarded the contract in the
beginning of year, the equipment was delivered and installed
last summer.
The company is based in the main sweet potato growing base
in China in southern Shandong province, half way between
Beijing and Shanghai. It is one of the largest processors of native
sweet potato starch as well as sweet potato based noodles.
Lifeng wanted to add more value to its products by a mashed
frozen sweet potato formed in different attractive shapes.
A product that is to be exported to other Asian countries.
The project is supplied on a turn-key basis, from the receiving
system up to and including the packaging system. Items that are
supplied by the customer have been specified and supervised
by the Kiremko project team, including the supports and
platforms as well as the Chinese made spiral freezer. Apart from
the above mentioned design modifications, the line is equipped
with the brand new Idaho Steel rotary
former branded NexGem®, a revolutionary
design that we have introduced at the
recent concluded Anuga FoodTech
exhibition and which generated lots of
interest. With this equipment Lifeng
Foods will be able to make an attractive
product in a variety of 2-dimensional
shapes, such as stars, ovals, faces and
round patties.

At Ecofrost in Belgium, a new potato specialities line was
commissioned last spring. The line is used to produce formed
potato croquettes and pommes noisettes. Raw materials for these
products are the rejects and the nubbin waste from the Kiremko
French fries lines. Before these rejects used to be discarded, often
for rather low prices.
Specialities line increases efficiency The rejects and nubbin waste from the French fries lines are
collected. By means of a weighing conveyor, it is controlled
how much product is actually fed into the specialities line.
The product will first undergo a short cooking process
in a twin screw steam cooker made by Idaho Steel
Products. Next, the product is separated by means of a
Hoegger. The hard, often black, parts are removed from
the cooked potato mash, resulting in a nice, even mash.
The mixing process is set up in such a way that batches of
mashed potato are alternately mixed with additives and a
mixture of flavourings. The recipe has been determined in
consultation with Ecofrost and has been extensively tested
beforehand. The dry matter content of the potato determines
the amount of additives, such as potato flakes.
After the mixing process, the noisettes and the croquettes are
formed using a machine made by the company of Townsend
(Marel), which has also been delivered and installed by
Kiremko. In order to meet a capacity of 2,000 kg/h, two
identical forming lines have been installed. Next, the
noisettes or croquettes are fried in a Kiremko Fry-by-Wire
fryer. Another possibility is to directly freeze the formed
products without pre-frying them.
During the frying process, the product is fried in a
continuous thin layer of oil. The flow and the oil level
are monitored by means of a PLC-controlled process with
pumps and suitable level sensors. This ensures a highly accurate
process, whereby the retention time of the product in the fryer
equals a pre-set value. As a result, the well-formed
products have a nice, even colour.
The steam/frying oil exchanger heats
the circulating oil to the requerd
temperature. The oil is continuously
filtered by way of a coarse belt filter in
the main oil flow. A cyclone and
paper filter purify the oil in a partial
flow. After the products have been
fried, they are transported to a spiral
freezing tunnel by a defatting vibrator.
The extra function of this vibrator
is to sieve out any small parts
and/or crumbs. Ecofrost has opted
for a spiral freezing tunnel of Belgian
manufacture.
This project has been executed
by Kiremko and several strategic
partners and suppliers. The control
system was provided and installed
by the Van den Pol company.
Ecofrost has achieved to realize a
fine, continuous production line,
which has contributed to the further
optimisation of the efficiency and
quality of the existing plant. In
addition, it has increased the product
range, produced from their own raw
materials. This way, Ecofrost can supply
a wider range of customers, both
nationally and abroad. Should another
product shape be desired, this can also
be arranged. The line has been designed
in such a way that another forming
machine can be positioned in the line. For
instance, one that produces Pommes
Duchesse.
In short, this is another excellent
example of the many possibilities
offered by potatoes and Kiremko!
