KINGSWOOD NEWS
Autumn 2019
04 October 2019
The Kingswood House Way
Dear Parents
It has been another busy week and thank you to Form 10L who delivered their own version of “KHS Breakfast News” in assembly with typical zest and no little humour. Well done as well to those talented musicians who showcased their wares in the midweek Informal Concert; whilst the teaching staff were undergoing important Fire Training outside in the rain, it was lovely for them to have some musical accompaniment!
I was pleased to see a good attendance at Open Morning yesterday and as usual our boys were excellent ambassadors. A reminder that you are warmly invited to walk around the school and share a coffee with both visitors and staff tomorrow morning.
Thank you to those of you who have written to your local MP in relation to the Labour policy to abolish independent schools. You will not be surprised to learn that this topic features prominently in my latest blog: “Independent Schools: Are some more equal than others?” – on a related note, I am pleased that the Rt Hon Chris Grayling, MP for Epsom and Ewell, will be visiting KHS later in the term and speaking with me in order to learn more about our value to the local community.
Yours sincerely
Duncan Murphy

The pure joy of learning at
Kingswood House—here
are James M and Dylan N
showing their excitement!
Languages galore!
The European Day of
Languages is celebrat-
ed every year on 26th
September.
Now in its seventeenth year, the day was first launched in 2002 follow-
ing the success of the European Year of Languages in 2001. It is organ-
ised jointly by the European Union and the Council of Europe and
something that here @ KHS we like to recognise in class as the purpose
of the EDL is to celebrate both the cultural and linguistic diversity with-
in Europe and to encourage and promote language learning.
As usual we celebrated this in
French classes on Thursday. Pupils
enjoyed activities such as hearing
various languages spoken and
guessing which languages they were. They also learned about the differ-
ent languages spoken by various celebrities, and watched a humorous
presentation about the importance of language learning and the silly
mistakes that can be made when using translation websites! An im-
portant yet fun day in the French Department!

Quelle couleur?
In Tuesday's French lesson, Years 1 and 2 were learning about colours. They discovered that some of the
words are similar to those in English and they enjoyed following the teddy bears as they got up to mischief in
the mud (brown), dressing up (black and purple) painting (grey) and many more. The boys then coloured their
own Arc en ciel (rainbow) which incorporated lots of the colours we had looked at. Mme Swift
Fossil fun!
Class 6C had such a fun Science lesson making fossils! As part of our topic, ‘Evolution and
Inheritance’, the boys have been learning about the fossilisation process. We decided to
bring this to life by making dinosaur fossils using salt dough. The boys all helped to make
the dough, adding flour, salt and water. Then, they were each given a small dinosaur toy
to imprint as you can see in the photos below; the results were fantastic. After being
baked, the boys got to take their fossils home
Mrs Celentano said, “I was so impressed by the teamwork shown and especially with Max D who selflessly
helped and did all the washing up!”
Potential surveyors?!
Do they measure up?! Year 1 and 2 learnt how to measure objects in centimetres and metres… here they are hard at work!
...they also had a super lesson making gingerbread shapes…
10L’s Assembly...was a compilation of ideas brought together in an interesting news-reel. Hosted by Michael
C & Alex H; the boys organised & created their own unique assembly which was enjoyed by all. Mrs Lindley
Class 3M make ‘chocolate rocks’?!
In our Extreme Earth topic we have been learning about how the three types of natural rock are formed.
In today’s lesson, we created ‘chocolate rocks’ to demonstrate the formation process. Can you spot who
else joined in?! Miss McSweeney
Quick game of UNO anyone?!
The Finance Office got ‘back to basics’ in the
week when the boys from Mrs Henery’s
class visited and showed off their number
and matching skills, alongside quick com-
petitive thinking in a fast and furious game
of UNO!

Football success...
Joshua and Ryan L have just joined a new club, Stoneleigh Athletic, but are already making a difference to the Satur-
day fixtures; Josh is also playing for Carshalton Athletic on a Sunday—busy boys! In their first competitive game for
Stoneleigh, Joshua played for the first time in his life as an out and out striker. He scored a hat trick and was an-
nounced, ‘Man of the Match’ with his team winning 3-2. In the second game, Joshua and Ryan in another debut,
played for the first time in their lives together as strike partners upfront with both scoring a goal each in a 4-0 win.
Additionally, Joshua plays for Carshalton as a left back or defensive midfielder and whilst not his main job, scored a
goal each in both of his first two games in 4-2 and 6-0 victories.
Both teams (Stoneleigh & Carshalton) are currently unbeaten and are playing against unbeaten teams this weekend.
Hopefully, the boys and their teams will find success at the back of the net once more—keep it up boys!
Toby R in 10L is running a Warhammer club on Monday, from 4pm to 5pm, in 8L form room. Open to Year 7 and above. Please bring your own Warhammer kit. For further information please speak to Toby (10L)
Which thermal properties?
Year 5 have been busy investigating thermal insulators in their science lessons this week. The boys did a
comparative test to see which materials kept ice frozen for the longest; they were all very engaged in the
task and learnt and understood lots. Well done, boys. Mrs Seiver
Stepping back in time...
Year 4 embarked on a history expedition to the British Museum on Monday and discovered real life mummies,
canopic jars, tomb paintings and other Ancient Egyptian artefacts. They also had the chance to see the Rosetta
Stone, the key to deciphering hieroglyph-
ics.
After lunch, the boys took part in an
‘Excavation in Egypt’ workshop and had
the chance to learn how archaeologists
discovered new findings. The boys were
excellent ambassadors for Kingswood
House School and have gained new in-
sights into our Ancient Egyptian topic
work! What a great day out! Miss Smith
and Mrs Lambert
The winners of the handwriting competition in Years 1 and 2 were Ciaran P and James W—very well done to both boys!
Our other divisional winners were:

Recycling @ KHS
These boys made a fantastic effort to create something from recycled
goods! Fantastic effort to Nathan and Arun both in Year 4. Ivan in Year 7
also made this super poster! You might notice it around school soon…
Miss Smith has now also met with the Eco Reps from Year 1 – 6. They thought of some great ideas about
what else we can recycle at school and what to do with rubbish collected at school events such as House
Family Day. The boys were very involved in the meeting and are keen to make our school a better
place. Watch this space for more recycling ideas in action at KHS. Miss Smith
Fossil facts and fun in 6F!
6F have been studying Evolution and Inheritance in Science. We borrowed samples of fossils from Kingston University to look at and study. We then used the iPads to research more about them. We were amazed at some of the different types of fossils.

World Mental Health Day—Thursday 10th October 2019
As a school we pride ourselves in supporting the whole child ; this means working to ensure
the balance of academics and wellbeing for every individual from Year 1 to Year 11. On
Thursday October 10th it is World Mental Health Day and this year in school we will be fo-
cusing on: Growth mindset, resilience and wellbeing.
Once again we will be raising money for the Young Minds charity organisation, so on the
10th October we will be asking all the boys and staff to wear something yellow and donate
£2 to support this amazing cause. Tops, shorts, a scarf, hat...but NO hair colour please!
Thank you in advance for your support, Miss Timothy.
It was all about D this week!
Well done Hugo J in 10L for his

Tea time concert
Well done to all the boys who performed at the teatime concert on Tues-
day. An incredible display of resilience in the face of biblical amounts of
inclement weather, pupils arriving late from fixtures and lost lyrics! Nev-
ertheless, the boys gave an amazing show, and everybody in attendance
enjoyed the delightful afternoon tea laid out by Jane and her team—
extended thanks to them.
The concert culminated in two performances from opposite ends of the
musical spectrum – the first, Poisoning Pigeons in the Park performed by
Rory Gibbs, the latter, Word Up performed by the GCSE band; both show-
ing equal merit. A great end to the school day, thank you to all involved.

Seniors vs The Hall 23/09/19 U16: KHS 3- 5 The Hall (L)
The U16’s this week travelled to the Hall, where they met a tough opposition. The boys put in a brave
performance and battled well; however, after some early mistakes gift the host’s two early goals, it
was always an uphill battle. Josh Johns’ superb hat trick was the highlight of the match alongside
good performances from Jack Fernandes and Charlie Thompson.
U14: No Fixture
U13 vs Tower House 25/09/19
U13 A: KHS 1-2 Tower House (L)
A very tight game, which saw some excellent football from both teams. The host took the lead and
then KHS pulled a goal back to make it 1-1 at half time. The hosts restored their lead in the second
half and held out from some late KHS pressure to take the victory.
MOTM: Ben Holmes & Stuart Coleman
U13 B: KHS 1-5 Tower House (L)
A tough game saw the U13B’s finish the first half 5-0 down, but a second half fight back saw King-
swood House battle hard for a goal scored by Ben Hubber. Some very good performances across the
very large pitch. Mr Rudkin
MOTM: Ruari Fitzpatrick
U13 C: KHS 0-8 Tower House (L)
The U13C’s had a very tough game against a strong Tower House Team. The host scored 5 unan-
swered goals to take a healthy lead into the half time break. KHS improved after the break, which was
good to see as we managed to learn from mistakes made in the first half. Mr Barratt
MOTM: Ted Bunyer-Ames
Sportsmanship Award: William Moffatt – Working very hard and not giving up.
U13 D: KHS 4-3 Tower House (W)
A great 4-3 win for the boys, with two brilliant goals by Ismail Muhammad and a goal apiece for Luca
Wintle and Archie Spick. We went 2-1 up, but Tower House came back and tied it 3-3, however our
boys had excellent determination to score the last goal, with great team play, which resulted in King-
swood regaining the lead with 5 minutes to play. Mr Wint
MOTM: Ismail Muhammad
Sportsmanship Award: Archie Spick – the ref awarded Kingswood a corner ball, but Archie knew it
came off him first and told the ref, so he changed it to a goal kick.

Colts vs Tower House 25/09/19
This week saw our colts teams combine to form six ’parallel’ teams to play Tower House’s three teams.
The day saw lots of boys playing and representing KHS. Here is a brief overview of each game:
Colts A1/A2: KHS 3-2 Tower House (W)
The two A teams put on a great performance against a tough Tower House A team. Many of the boys
played brilliantly, including Jayden Eddy, leading from the front for the A2 team. Theo Walker scored two
amazing goals for the A1 team and Kobi Wood put in a great performance between the posts. Well done
on a great joint team win. Mr Swift.
A1- MOTM: Kobi Wood
A2 - MOTM: Jayden Eddy
Colts B1/B2: KHS 0-4 Tower House (L)
The two B teams had a tough game against a strong Tower House B team, but put in a good battling per-
formance but defensive mistakes led to a 4-0 loss over the 2 halves.
B1 team’s standout player was Dylan Bishop, with several outstanding 1-on-1 saves to keep the score as
low as possible. Joel Mukarati, showed great sportsmanship, to help up an opponent whom he fouled.
In the B2 team’s half, Tahil Rana received the sportsmanship award, due to him telling the referee to
award a penalty against him due to a handball on his behalf –which led to Josh McCrosson saving the re-
sulting penalty to give him the man of the match award. Mr Cribb.
B1 - MOTM: Dylan Bishop
Sportsmanship Award: Joel Mukarati – helping an opponent back to his feet.
B2- MOTM: Josh McCrosson
Sportsmanship Award: Tahil Rana –owning up to the referee that the ball hit his hand in the penalty area.
Colts C1/C2: KHS 1-3 Tower House (L)
The two C teams were involved in an end-to-end thriller, which saw the visitors walk away with the win.
The boys battled very hard and were foiled by the Tower House goalie on many occasions, who clearly
had his Weetabix that morning. It was a great game to watch with some excellent performances from
many of the boys, including Archie Spick, Henry Ruscoe, Jeremy Blachman and Jasper Wong. Mr Hendry.
C1 -MOTM: Jeremy Blachman
Sportsmanship Award: Arlo Saywell – giving support to his team mates when they conceded a goal.
C2- MOTM: Emir Ozerdrici
Sportsmanship Award: Jason Shih – collected the ball for the opposition when it was kicked a long way
off the pitch.
U8/9 vs Duke of Kent 26/09/19
U8/9 A: KHS 4-2 Duke of Kent (W)
The A team played their part in a thrilling, end-to-end match which saw six brilliant goals from both teams. KHS ran out 4-2 winners with goals from Cameron Edward & Sam Atkins with two apiece. It was a great team performance; well done on the victory, boys. Mr Laudy
MOTM: Cameron Edwards
U8/9 B: KHS 0-5 Duke of Kent (L)
A tough game against Duke of Kent, which saw the boys suffer a big defeat. There are many positives to take from the performance, however, with many of the boys showing excellent attitudes and trying their best until the final whistle. We go again next week - well tried, boys! Mr Caprano-Wint
MOTM: Frazer Blyth
Sportsmanship Award: Frankie Larter—Constantly encouraging team mates, even when conceding goals.
U8/9C: KHS 1-2 Duke of Kent (L)
A very evenly-matched C team game! The boys started well with some great runs and a solo effort from Jamil taking the score to 1-0. Duke of Kent managed to sneak in a goal just before half time. Un-fortunately, a last minute goal by Duke of Kent meant the boys lost 2-1. Great match, boys! Miss Smith
MOTM: Jamil Hashemi
Sportsmanship Award: Fraser Schmitt—never giving up and trying his hardest.

Dragon boat racing update!
On Saturday 28th September, Miss Wilson joined Advantage Paddlers at Fairlop Waters
where they had been invited to race as part of the Lord Mayor’s appeal. It was an early start
with a very cold breeze blowing and showers threatening. Advantage Paddlers demonstrated
some excellent times for the 200m races in their heats. They even beat a time set by Team GB
on the day; GB Juniors were visiting as part of a training exercise and set a time of 56.82 sec-
onds, Advantage Paddlers completed one of the races in 55.75 seconds – their fastest time
this year! The competition was tough but Advantage pulled through finishing in a respectable
third place, going home with a bronze medal each and a great day was had by all.
A huge thank you to all our parents.
The KHA have generously been able to give the
school £4,000 which we will be spending on books
for the library, art and form rooms, iPads, and
Christmas treats. Without your support, this would
not be possible and we are very grateful.
Well done to Lisa Reece and the KHS Committee.
