CHOICE AND CHALLENGEOPPORTUNITIESSecondary schools are very different places to those
experienced by parents and grandparents. They offer
very different programs and co-curricular programs for
students in the teenage years. These programs maintain
their engagement with school, and allow students to explore
their world and themselves in the world.
The Essington School Darwin has been a leading, innovative Middle School in Darwin from
its establishment 15 years ago. In the mid 1990s it pioneered Middle School education in
Darwin.
The Essington School Principal, David Cannon said: “Beyond the classroom programs in
Middle School, it is important for students to be engaged, connected and affirmed as
they grow through these early adolescent years. Choice and challenge in co-curricular
programs is important for students from Years 6 to 9, and we work to provide a variety of
optional programs for our students”.
The Essington School’s Music, Singing and Dance programs provide a focus for the creative
talent of students in the Middle School. A large number are involved in after school music
lessons, band and singing practice, and dance activities. The School is planning to expand
its after school and Saturday programs in music, singing and dance in 2013.
Students over 14 years of age are all involved in the outstanding Duke of Edinburgh Award
program with most students attaining their Bronze Award by the end of Year 10. This
program provides students with a structured community service and outdoor adventure
program.
Students also participate in School outdoor education camps at Years 6 and 7 level to
different locations including Lake Bennett, and Litchfield National Park.
Students can also participate in a number of optional student tours to the snow (for skiing
and snowboarding), Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef, Singapore, and to the School’s
sister school in Tokyo. In 2013 students will also have the opportunity to participate in
student tours to Borneo, and to Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. The School’s growing
Asian Languages and Culture programs will see an increasing number of tours available
to students to Asia.
Because of the schools limited number of classes, and small class numbers enrolments are
limited at all levels.
For further information contact the School’s Registrar on Phone 8985 0100 for
further information.

ST ANDREW LUTHERANPrimary School
St Andrew Lutheran Primary School in Leanyer is celebrating 30 years of providing quality education and care to children of Darwin. From humble beginnings in 1983, St Andrew has developed a reputation for nurturing education that gets results in producing well-rounded students who are well
equipped to enter middle school and beyond.
In 2013 the school has entered an exciting new phase by taking over the running of the Early Learning Centre on the St Andrew site. A qualified Early Childhood Teacher is now employed to provide exciting pre-school learning activities for children aged 3-5. Take a look into the ELC during daily learning time and you will see happy children engaged at different stations learning and growing. Some will be on iPads, some manipulating objects, some with books. There will be laughter, excitement, inquiring minds, lots of questions, and more. The teacher, team leader and educators keep a close eye on the educational and care requirements of each child. The Early Years Learning Framework is used to guide learning activities. In the outdoors area of the ELC you will see ample shaded play space, age appropriate play equipment including bikes on a bike path, an outdoor fresco
style eating area, and even a bucket of tadpoles and a frilled neck lizard or two!Being located on the St Andrew school site means that children at the ELC can access the school’s library for library lessons and borrowing time, the computer lab, playground and hardcourt. The Early Learning Centre provides stimulating learning that prepares young minds for the move into ‘big school’. Anxiety over starting big school is significantly reduced as the children are already familiar with the faces and buildings they will encounter in primary school. The ELC provides flexible hours that suit many working parents opening at 7.30am and closing at 5.30pm.You are welcome to visit the ELC at 94 Leanyer Drive, Leanyer, or contact the ELC for further information on 89451044 or sals.earlylearning@ntschools.net. Information is also available on www.standrew.nt.edu.au.

I’ve gone from having no training within the childcare industry to completing my certificate 3 in Children’s Services. I’ve done my diploma and now I’m in my 3rd year of a teaching degree which all started thanks to me being part of the DFDC family.”
