Utility Operator II
Public Works Department Salary: $27.36-$30.90/hr. DOE – Union: IBEW – Permanent full-time, insurance, retirement, PTO. Under the direction of the Utilities Supervisor, work to maintain and operate the Borough’s water and wastewater facilities. Employees must have Level I Water Distribution certification and Level II Wastewater Treatment, Wastewater Collection and Water Treatment certifications. Partial certifications and experience will be considered. Valid State of Alaska driver’s license and State of Alaska CDL with B endorsement with a driving record acceptable to the Borough’s insurance carrier. CPR or BLS card and First Aid Certification must be current or obtained within 6 months of employment. All final employment offers are contingent on the successful passing of pre-employment drug testing. Must be 21 years old to apply. JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Utilities Supervisor, work to maintain and operate theBorough' s water and wastewater facilities. Required Operator certifications include water
distribution Level I, water treatment Level II, wastewater treatment and collection Level II. Weekend and shift work will be required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Perform tasks involving maintenance activities related to water and wastewaterfacilities.
Maintain logs on all equipment related to water and wastewater facilities. Perform
record keeping calculations.
Respond to emergency calls relating to water and wastewater facility maintenanceand operations.
Understands science and rationale behind routine sample collection and testing.
Understands how test results are used to monitor compliance with permits.
Use various hand and power tools when required to perform a task

Operate forklifts, loaders, backhoes, flatbed trucks, utility trucks, vactor truck andsimilar motorized equipment.
Maintain water and wastewater facilities including but not limited to collectingsamples for laboratory work, cleaning and repairing equipment.
Perform sewer collection system maintenance and in clean- up after septic system
failures, using high pressure sewer cleaner or vacuum truck.
Promotes positive public relations, responds to public inquiries in a courteous
manner and provides information within scope of knowledge or refers to
supervisor.
Performs all tasks in accordance with sound safety practices.
Is familiar with department manuals, procedure manuals, equipment manuals, and
other manuals to become familiar with equipments, tools, processes and
procedures.
Provide instruction to other employees of this or a similar job classification in allaspects of procedure and technique relating to the duties required by this jobdescription unless such instruction requires a specialized certification which the
employee doing the training does not have.
Perform related other duties as directed.
ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES:
Assist in the Maintenance and Repair of other Borough facilities and equipment asneeded.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
Must be able to hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color
vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to usehands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; and taste or smell. Each of the listed activities alsorequires standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, climbing on stools and ladders, androutinely lift and carry items and boxes up to seventy ( 70) pounds.

Frequent outdoor work and exposure to inclement weather and rigorous conditions.
Crawling, bending, stooping in confined areas. Clearing brush, trees and debris fromdams and spillways. Lifting, holding, carrying and using various tools and equipment. Administer CPR and first aid as, as needed
LICENSES:
Valid State of Alaska driver' s license with a driving record acceptable to the Borough' sinsurance carrier.
Within thirty ( 30) days of employment, employee will be offered Hepatitis vaccine series. Employees declining vaccinations will be required to sign a waiver.
The following licenses/ certificates must be current or obtained within 6 months ofemployment:
CPR or BLS card
First Aid Certification
The following license must be current or obtained within 1 year of employment or age 21, whichever is later:
State of Alaska CDL ( Commercial Drivers License) with B endorsement.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability and desire to learn through training, including classroom and self- directedtraining, and on- line and in- person testing. Continued effort towards obtainingadditional applicable certifications is expected of the position.
Ability to work with little supervision, be self -motivated, manage time effectivelyand solve problems successfully.
Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with public, supervisorand co- workers.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma or GED equivalent
