Molecular Shape & Molecular Polarity

In molecules with more than two atoms, both shape and bond polarity determine molecular polarity.

The dipole moment (µ) is the product of these partial charges and the distance

between them.

It is typically measured in debye (D) units; using the SI units of charge (coulomb, C) and length (meter, m),

1 D = 3,34X 10-30 Cm

The Pauling electronegativity (EN) scale.

Arrange each set of bonds in order of increasing polarity, and indicate bond polarity with δ + and δ - symbols:

(a)Cl-F, Br-CI, CI-CI

(b) Si-Cl, P-CI, S - CI, Si-Si
