Diversity in Technology Panel
I had the opportunity to share the County’s ini-tiatives as a part of a larger dialogue on Diversi-ty in Technology as a part of the Black Panther Party 50th Anniversary conference on October 22nd. I spoke alongside a number of distin-guished guests, such as Dr. Uma Jayakumar of UC Riverside, Dr. Elnora Webb of the Peralta Community Colleges, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Lisa Lee of Pandora, Dr. Bryan Brown of Stanford, and our moderator Kevin Nichols of The Social Engineer.

Spotlight: Alameda County
Arts Commission
The Alameda County Arts Commis-sion identified select individuals who are contributing to the commu-nity through their art as a part of the 2016 Alameda County Arts Leader-ship Award Program. On September 27, we recognized the contributions of Bruce Beasley, who is a sculp-tor, public art artist, and philanthro-pist, and Ayodele Nzinga, Found-ing Artistic Director of Sister Thea Bowman Memorial Theater.

Our Latest Events
On August 31, we hosted the first of our Community
Empowerment Forums, which aim to engage our com-
munity members on important local issues. Held at the
West Oakland Youth Center, the Community Empow-
erment Forums are a series of conversations to discuss
and find solutions for the issues that influence our daily
lives. In the tradition of the Black Panthers, these fo-
rums are an extension of the Freedom Schools to edu-
cate communities on social justice issues.
We also featured 16 resource tables of county agencies,
faith-based organizations, and community organiza-
tions that provide important resources for community
members. Mrs. Aloysia Fouche of Fouche’s Hudson’s
Funeral Home hosted one of the tables (pictured
above). Our event program included a resource guide
with nearly 80 faith-based organizations providing
services.
On September 29, we hosted nearly 200 community
members and faith leaders for our Power of Faith
event, in which we highlighted the contributions of faith
communities. Hosted at the Ed Roberts Campus in
Berkeley, our attendees participated in panels focused
on different topics, like the challenges of housing and
homelessness, and the role that youth leaders play in
faith organizations. Pictured above was our panel about
funding opportunities for the faith community.

Our staff got to enjoy a lovely day meeting with our
constituents at the 2016 Rockridge Out-and-About
Street Fair on October 9.
