There’s over 20,000 animals in Tanzania's Serengeti. On 1/20/2011 Malcolm Reyn and Liwien Appels came to talk to the fourth grade at IST and they told us about wild life and tourism.
Safaris are very important in Tanzania it brings money and tourist to Tanzania . Some of the places to go on safari in Tanzania are Serengeti, Gombe, Katavi, Mikumi, Ngorogoro crater, Selous and many more . A safari is when you hire
a guide to drive you around a car and drive you around a game park and tell you about wildlife . One of the big problems in Tanzania is hunting . Theres nothing around the game parks to stop the animals from going out it can be good but when they get out hunters can kill them . Another problem is that the government allows hunting and they can hunt everywhere exempt game parks and cites . One of the other problems is the paved
road going straight through Serengeti . Malcolm Ryen said”IT’s just a dirt road now but theres a lot of argument about it”.
There is over 500,000 wilder beast in Serengeti .Only male elephants are in ngorogoro crater . there is 100 different species of dung beetle . theres over 200,000 gazelle in Serengeti . Serengeti is one of the 7 world wonders .Selous is the biggest game park in the world.

This is the million year old coelacananth caught in tanzania.
FISHING and how it is a problem.
People in Tanzania catch almost
every fish so it becoming a problem the
people eat almost ever fish and are over
fishing. Some people come to catch big
game fish. Some of the best places catch
big game is, Dar Es Salaam and Pangani.
You can also gob to zanzibar and Pemba.
People in Tanzania fish with nets, fishing
rods and dynamite. Dynamite is a big
problem because it destroys 2 or 3 meters
of coral and lots of fish die and 80% of the
fish that are dynamited float to the bottom
too quickly to be collected. People fish in Tanzania for food and sport. Most Tanzanians fish in the sea. There were lots
of fish but now over fishing has caught so
much that little remain.
Tanzanians do most of the fishing and
a few tourists do sport fishing. There are
not allot of fisheries but the government
owns most of them. many Tanzanians
living on the coast are involved in fishing
and allot of fish are eaten. There are allot of
problems with dynamite and
commercial fishing.

Did you know that there are no giraffes or female
elephants in the Ngorongoro crater or that there is such
thing as an underwater safari? We learned all this when
Lidwien Appels came on the 20th January in Miss Ruth’s
grade four classroom and talked about wildlife and natural
tourism. We had her to come to IST so the grade 4
students could learn more about Tanzania.
Wildlife is important to T
anzania because it attracts tourists from other
countries and makes money for Tanzania.Including natural
tourism there is also gemstones and cultural
tourism.Tourists biggest attraction is the Ngorongoro crater
for it is more than 1,000 meters wide!During safaris you
can see many different animals. In Tanzania. In Tanzania you
can also see wildebeest and huge african elephants. The
best places to go on safari in Tanzania is The Selous Game
Reserve and Ngorongoro Crater.
The biggest talk nowadays is the highway they want to
build in the Serengeti. The highway may be a big problem
for the animals especially for the wildebeest since they go
through the Serengeti to go to Kenya and back because
that is heir migration route.Since wildlife is becoming more
popular animals are getting endangered!Because of this
Tanzania may not get enough money for its country and
people wont have much food. Most of this is happening
because people do illegal poaching.
Lidwien says’‘There are more then 50 game reserves in
Tanzania as Tanzania is the only country in the world that
produces more than 25% of its country to have wildlife!”.

ALL ABOUT WILDLIFE AND TOURISM AT ITS FINEST!
By Dominique Ernst
Did you know that there are no female elephants in
Ngorongoro Crater which is in Tanzania? On the 20th of
January 2011 an expert called Liedwin Appel and some
grade 4 students had gathered at IST in Miss Ruth’s
classroom. They started talking about Wildlife in Tanzania
so that grade 4 students could learn more about wildlife.
The grade 4 learned what natural resources are important
for safari.
When people go on safari they have to pay money to
go in to the National Parks. Like Selous Game Reserve,
Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park and Mkumi.
So Tanzania gets quite a lot of money from tourism
especially from safari. There are some people that pay to
take a picture of the Masai. When you go on safari you
need a guide, most of the guides are from tanzania and
they are taught all the stuff about animals in a special
school. People that have already seen some of the
National Parks tell their friends about the National Parks
and that brings a lot of tourists and because of that
Tanzania gets a lot of money.
When tourists go on safari they take pictures of the
animals, and when they take pictures they’re disturbing
the animals because of the flash that it makes. In the
Serengeti National Park they’re thinking of building a road.
But if they build a road, when people are driving they
could run over an animal and make it extinct.
In Tanzania they allow people to hunt animals. The
reason is that Tanzania’s government thinks they aren’t
getting enough money from tourists coming to see the
animals so they allow hunting to get more money. And
since all National Parks are very well protected that no one
is allowed to hunt in National Parks.
There are also other types of tourism like cultural and
historical tourism. Liedwin Appel said, “ To the tourists,
Tanzania also offers interesting culture and Arts.”

Gemstone comes to Grade 4 in IST By Renato Soverina
Did you know alexandrite is the rarest gemstone? Or how to notice a fake gemstone? Grade 4 knows! In 20th january 2011 Grade 4 got a visit from expert Ryan scholtz and 4th grade got a lot of information from him which inspired the students of IST. Grade 4 happily become experts at gemstones in tanzania finding out importance and hazards in mining.
Tanzanite can be found in kilimanjaro so you can find mines there! And sometimes you can find them in rivers or dig a few inches. Gems found in a mine don’t look good, but after being polished and carved, they're worth a fortune. As you see gems makes money for tanzania and earn jobs for tanzanians.
The government owns some of the mines. But miners don’t earn a lot of money for the job they are doing. Mining can also be dangerous such as rocks falling or heavy rain drowning them and maybe not enough fresh air ( can include the being trapped bit.) When we mine on mountains we destroy them and on
landscape we ruin it plus people can fall in and (yes you guessed it) DIE. Ryan scholtz says” I’d hate to be a miners of the risks and low paying plus the dynamite’’ ( it's true.) People sometimes sell illegally the gems to buy guns and ammo for War!
We can measure gemstone with a special laser gun ( not the type that slices people) that measures what’s inside the stone. sapphires can come in 67 different colors including white, black, and clear. it has nothing special so people don’t have war for it. It just looks good Ryan has some gemstone and it’s a lifetime work.

CULTURAL TOURISM IN TANZANIA
GRADE 4’S LEARN ABOUT HISTORICAL/CULTURAL TOURISMBY Hasita Lakhani
Did you know there are interesting historical and cultural sites in Tanzania? Mejah is a guide in Afriroots and an expert at cultural sites. Mejah talked about Historical/cultural tourism. This took place at i.S.T.in the grade 4 classrooms. It happened on the 20th January 2011. this happened so the grade4s could have more information about historical/cultural tourism.
Historical/cultural tourism is when people come to see historical sites or come to learn about other cultures. According to Utalii Travel and Safari a company that runs tours of Tanzania “contributes to conservation efforts and to well being of communities”. Historical/cultural tourism can help Tanzania because the tourists pay their guide, so the guide goes home buys food for the family and the guide can pay or send his/her children to school.Guides go and show the tourists around places You can find historical sites in Zanzibar,
Bagamoyo and so many other places in Tanzania. There are so many different cultures in Tanzania , some of them are Masai and Kuryan.
Some of the owners of guiding companies are from different countries so all the money they make gets sent to their home country. Some tourists don't follow the culture they go to.The future cultural tourism will be more popular because before no one knew about Tanzania.
In Tanzania there are two tourists. One is domestic tourists and the other is foreign tourists. Most tribes in Tanzania speak Kiswahili. When tourists go to cultures they taste new things and if they like it ,they keep on buying it. That helps Tanzania a lot. Most Kiswahili houses have 6 bedrooms. When tourists come to Tanzania they go to cultures they wear different clothes and the owner of that culture does not like it.

Do you want to know more about the beautiful
wildlife in Tanzania? Yesterday Malcolm Ryen talked about wildlife in Tanzania. It happened in I.S.T room 53.Malcolm said that “wildlife in Tanzania is important so we need to protect it.
Do you want to know the top 4 national parks in Tanzania? They’re 1.Ngorongoro Crater 2. Serengeti 3. Tarangive national park 4. Selous game reserve. A safari is important because it attracts tourists from all over the world. Tour guides earn money so do the lodges and restaurants. Taking a safari helps you know more about animals and you don’t have to hunt. The uncommon animals that you see are Rhino’s,Wild dogs and Zanzibar’s red Colobus.
But some people might hunt the animals because they need the meat or as a souvenir. People normally hunt Buffalo because the have allot of meat or a big head to put on their wall. Taking a safari also pollutes the air which the breath in. Safari’s get more and more popular every day.
Did you know they’re only male Elephants in the Ngorongoro crater? People are building a highway in the middle of Serengeti but some people are talking about a dirt road.

GRADE 4 LEARNS ABOUT CULTURAL TOURISM!!!!!!
By: Leila O’sullivan Have you ever been to Bagamoyo to see the amazing sites,if you didn't pack your bags and get a ticket! Yesterday morning Meja came to talk to grade4 about cultural tourism in I.S.T in Tanzania.
In Bagamoyo you can see the historical sites , like the museum and the grave-yard where a mother and her children were buried around her. you can also buy jewelry sold in Bagamoyo and if your really interested in what i said you can go on a tour being shown by a guide. Bagamoyo
means Throw down your heart because long time ago they used to be slaves and they died while being forced to do work and if they don't want to do the work they would be whipped and eventually the slaves would die then be buried.
When you go on a walking tour and you see poor children. people give them money to go buy something and that is bad , because that courages them to go on begging on the street and it is very dangerous for children to go walking on the street by them selfs. Another
issues is that people go on a walking tour and they eat something with a wrapping paper and they trow it around and that going to destroy the environment around their house.
In Zanzibar they are many muslims and they usually wear covered clothes wherever they go but , when some muslims go on a tour they dress un covered and it is bad because other people who see them might copy them and their mom or dad might also get mad for not following their religion.
Go to Africa to see cultural tourism

All about wild lifeand Tanzania!
WILDLIFE AT ITS BESTBy Olivia Killian Green
Did you know that the Red Colobus Monkey is only found in
Zanzibar, a small island of the coast of Tanzania? Yesterday the
20th of January 2011, in Grade 4 room 53 at IST, Malcolm Ryen
and Liedwen Appels came to talk to us grade 4 students about
wildlife and natural tourism in Tanzania so we could have more
information.
When you go on a safari in Tanzania you can go to some very
famous parks like Ngorongoro crator and Serengeti national park.
Your guide is the person who drives the safari vehicle and shows
you all the animals. On a safari you can see many animals but the
most common animals you can see are Impalas, Giraffes, Zebras
and Baboons. There are many different kinds of safaris. Car
safaris, boat safaris, hot air balloon safaris and underwater safaris.
For some national parks, you are able to fly to them but for some
you have to drive to them. In Tanzania there is more than only
safaris. There is also Mt.Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru. Many people
come to climb these mountains. Liedwen Appels said, “Other
additional attractions include the sandy beaches north and south
of Dar es Salaam.”
Tanzania makes a lot of money out of wildlife and safaris and
it is a big tourist attraction. It gives many local Tanzanians jobs
and training. The money that the government gets is used for
good things like building schools and offices. The government is
thinking about taring the dirt road that goes through the Serengeti
national park but many people are protesting because it will affect
the Wildebeests migration. Tanzania has two types of safaris.
Hunting safaris and photo safaris. Most people hunt Buffalos.
Most foreigners hunt them because of big skulls that people hang
on their walls. Locals hunt them because of their meat that they
some times eat.
In Tanzania the Ngongoro creator has no female elephants
and no Giraffes. Giraffes can’t get in the creator because the
creator is surrounded by many small hills and mountains. Tanzania
is a very interesting country with lots to do and see and you can
see these things if you come to Tanzania.

GEMSTONESBy:Ronick somaiya
Did you know if you light a gemstone it changes
color from black to red. Ryan Scholtz showed us. He
knew a lot about gemstones. He was an expert on
gemstones. It started at 8:05 to 9:30 on January 21. It
happened at IST.
Gemstones are very important to people because if
you sell it you can get a lot of money. And people just
have the money they never use it because they don’t
know what to spend it on. Tanzanite is the second
strongest gemstone. The color you can find for it is blue.
Gemstones are commonly found in Tanga,Tabora,
Moshi, Shinyanga. Also in Volcanoes you can find it
under the crust. If you go under the river and you can
find some gemstone.
The issues related to gemstones is that landscapes,
plants, wildlife animal, houses get destroyed. Also
people rob other mines. mining gemstones also destroys
our environment. In 1998 more than 1000 people died
after rain flooded the mines.
Our expert told us ``that you can find gemstones at
a lot of places like some of them he found at mine and
he bought some gems like one of them were Rubies and
he said that diamond is the strongest gemstone. There
was a guy called Ali Juuyawatu found a piece of a
gemstone in July of 1996.

cultural tourism!
BY SAHAR AL HILAL
Have you ever been on a historical tour in
Tanzania ? If you haven't pack your bags and get
a ticket and then head straight to the airport .You
can even go to a Masaai village and then look at
how they live and see the difference between your
life and theirs. on the 20th of January a man
called Majah came and talked to the grade 4 in
IST about historical tourism in Tanzania and other
issues related to cultural tourism in Tanzania .
Tourists come to Tanzania because most of the
time they just go on Safari 1 week beaching 1
week and maybe cultural tourism 1 or 3 days. But
no one knows that if you go on a tour you can
buy things on the way and learn about the history
and why Tanzania is like that , for example has
peace and harmony.
When you go on a walking tour and you see
poor people while you are walking . Maybe they
have an injury if you give them candy or money
they will never get of the street .They will just
stay their for the rest of their life till they die. Even
when they grow up they will still be begging on the
street day after day .This happens in most places
like Zanzibar , Bagamoyo , Kilwi , Mafia and
Tanga.
In Zanzibar they are many muslims and they
wear clothes that are very religious clothes so lets
say you go on a tour and and maybe you didn't
wear clothes that are covered and those people
go to the the market and look for the same thing
and maybe they found what you were wearing and
they go on the street and get a lot of sins!!

Did you know that Selous National Park in Tanzania is the biggest game reserve in the world? On thursday 20th of January 2011 Malcolm Ryen and Lidwien Appels came to I.S.T’s grade4 students to teach them about wildlife and game reserves. The biggest issue about wildlife in Tanzania is the road in the Serengeti’s. According to Malcolm Ryen and Lidwien Appels they are making a dirt road.
Do you know what the five most popular parks in Tanzania are? I’m about to tell you. At number1 it it the Ngorongoro Crater, coming in at a close
second is the Serengeti National Park, in third is Tarangire National Park, in fourth it’s Lake Manyara National Park and finally fifth is Selous Game Reserve. Two years ago these National Parks and Game Reserves attracted a massive 714,367 tourists. One of the major where what are the three most uncommon animals in Tanzania? that left the experts puzzled until Malcolm Ryen finally said, “The first one is the rhino wild dog the second one is the Zanzibar Red Kolobus monkey and the third adus striker.”
Even though wildlife is big in Tanzania it has some issues, wildlife in Tanzania has taken a massive drop of population because 2008 had 770,376 people and 2009 got 714,367 people and if that keeps on happening there might not be a future for wildlife in Tanzania. With all the cars passing by the animals causes pollution and slowly kills the animals.
According to Lidwien Appels Tanzania has more than 100,000 animals and has 98 places to see animals.

DID you know that there are over 67 different colors in a sapphire , and it is one of the worlds hardest gems? Well that is what Ryan Scholtz talked about to the fourth grade students at IST when he visited on the 20th of January! He also talked about other information so that the fourth graders could understand more about gemstones.
Gems can be made into all shapes and sizes! Ryan told us that they put rough gemstones into a polisher that make them all shiny and smooth. Ryan also told us that there are many places where gemstones can be found in Tanzania. Tanzanite is only found near MT.Kilimanjaro, but miners have just found 2 more pieces of
When Ryan came he talked about the issues related to mining, for example he said, “There is more Tanzanite sold in Kenya than in Tanzania because it is being smuggled in!” Mining effects the land as well because houses have to be taken down for them to mine
underneath. Mining can be very dangerous and many lives are risked every day. You can only mine if you are given permission from the government. Villagers might be affected by mining because miners might get permission to mine underneath the village from the government. So the villagers will have no home. It can effect jewelry shops
because they will get more gems and get more
money.
Ryan brought with him some Tanzanite that
he had collected over the years. He brought a
machine too that tells you what is in a
gemstone when you hold it up to the machine!
He also brought a parcel that had lot’s of rocks
in it but they weren't a normal rock, they had
copper in them!
GEMSTONES COME TO IST
TUESDAY 1ST FEBRUARY 2011

Gemstones Newsletter
On Thursday 21st of January in IST in a geologist came to Ms. Lawson’s room. He came because of our unit Karibuni Tanzania. He told us why gemstones are important and how mining also gives a lot of issues.
Gemstones are important because some people get money from this and you use money for a lot of things like food and school. Tanzanite is special because you can only find them in Tanzania. They are two colors light blue and dark blue they both look beautiful but just look a little different. They are found in Tanzania near Mount Kilimanjaro . They use a machine to polish and cut it. Gemstones are mined by digging or exploding it from under ground . After they are mined they look like powder so they have to go and extract the gemstones to make it into a stone.
In Tanzania business men and miners mine Tanzania. Business men usually own mines to get a lot of money. The issues of mining is families have to get moved because they may be gemstones under their house so they have to use their life
savings to get another house because the house which they had is blown up and there is a big hole instead of a house. So they have to buy the house now they can’t wait anymore. Another issue is that sometimes the person who is pumping oxygen in the mine gets interested like if they find a big gem so he leaves the pump and there will be no oxygen in the mine so they die. Also another problem is gunned robbery were they force the miners to give them the gems.
The geologist showed us some gemstones he found or bought it at shops in different countries everywhere .He let us take gemstones with copper on it the copper was light blue . He had a collection of gemstones . He told us their machines is a machine that cuts and polishes gemstones so they look exactly like the ones at the stores. Ryan told us
“if you light a gemstone it changes color from
black to red.” He showed us with a torch. The
gem is called the Alexanderite.

CULTURAL TOURISM AND HISTORICAL SITES IN TANZANIA.By Zameena Rajabali
Did you know that in Tanzania, there are interesting, fascinating and spontaneous historical/cultural sites? Mejah the expert of tourism and some of the 4th Grade children were involved in cultural tourism. We talked about historical and cultural tourism in Tanzania. This took place at IST in one of the Grade 4 rooms. It happened on the 20th January 2011. This incident happened because we wanted to learn more information on historical and cultural tourism in Tanzania.
Cultural tourism is when people from a country go to another to learn about their
culture and how they live. Last year 1.8 million tourists came to Tanzania to explore new things. Many tourists come to Tanzania because of the Mountains, the animals and the safaris. However other people come to Tanzania to learn the history of Tanzania. You can go to Bagamoyo and Zanzibar to see cultural tourism in Tanzania. In Tanzania, there are many kinds of cultural and historical tourism like the Masai Village and a lot of other things.
Tourism in Tanzania is becoming more popular because a lot of people are coming to Tanzania to find out new things. Tourists keeps part of the old
sites safe like the PYRAMID OF EGYPT and others too. If you wanted to go on a tour and there were no tourist guides, you can’t go on a tour. The government encourages people to go on cultural tours. The governments of Tanzania said, “Sense the culture and history of the Swahili people of Coastal Tanzania.”
Going on a tour is like going on a field trip. If you want to see cultural tourism in any country, some of the things you can find out are: where they live and what they eat.
I would like you to go on a tour in Tanzania.
Go to Africa to see Cultural Tourism.
