Hello NSCS Kaplan Chapter,
my name is Renata Salvador-
Schuster. I became a lifetime
NSCS member on February
29th, 2016. I was born and
raised in Quito- Ecuador, one
of the highest capitals in the
world (Albelda, 2013). Half of
my lifetime ago, my family
and I moved from Ecuador to Alexandria-Virginia, but
my husband’s career with the military has taken us to
multiple cities around the States. I am a hair designer
who has taken time off to care full time for my two
small children and to attend Kaplan where I am pur-
suing a Business degree that will someday allow me
to open my own business. I have been on the Presi-
dent’s list since I enrolled with Kaplan last summer,
and I plan on continuing with the hard work and dedi-
cation. When not working on assignments or school
work, you can find me caring for my home, attending
tea parties with my toddler in her doll house, goofing
around with my baby boy, or playing with my four
legged son “Briscoe”, a loving yorkie-tzu mix. I am
excited to be a member and look forward to estab-
lishing long lasting relationships with other NSCS
members.

One of the first things
taught in business is
how to be a successful
entrepreneur and what
options are available to
start up your dream
business. What is less
likely known is what to
do once you decide to
be finished with that business. There are many rea-
sons why you might want to back out of the company
you started. Perhaps you feel you are successful
enough and just want to collect you profits and retire.
Or maybe your dreams have changed and you have
another great idea for an even better company.
Whatever the reasons, there are a few things you
should consider when deciding on an exit strategy.
One thing you may be asking is just what is an
exit strategy? An exit strategy is a plan devised, usual-
ly around the startup of the company, on how you
wish to leave the business. There are a few exit strat-
egies to choose from. There is no one good exit strat-
egy for every business. Every company is different as
well as the people who run it. Make sure the strategy
you pick is the best one for you and your business.
Welcome Renata Salvador-Schuster

The Art of the Exit

In an IPO exit you sell part of your company in
the public markets. You and your management team
can remain for years, your investors may be able to
sell some stock and the company continues to run as
smoothly as it has in the past. However, the company
will be subject to other regulations such as Sarbanes-
Oxley requirements and your quarterly performance
will be examined closely by institutional investors.
With a strategic acquisition a company will
purchase your business either with cash or stock or a
combination of both. The buying company may or
may not keep the original staff and management
team and could change daily operations significantly
if they wish. The disadvantage to this strategy is that
you will probably lose control over what happens in
the business after that as the buyer will take over the
decision making processes.
A management buyout is when you sell your
company to the next generation of managers. This
type of transaction is usually funded through some
kind of debt and/or private equity deal, with the debt
collateralized by the assets of the company. This can
quickly provide liquidity to the owner and sharehold-
ers. The company can operate as a private enterprise.
The benefit to this strategy is that is usually leads to a
smoother transition from you to the next generation
of managers who are acquiring the company.
It is important to remember that the decisions
you make for your company at the very beginning will
affect how it will operate in the future. These begin-
ning decisions will also dictate how to exit out of the
company in the end. Again, there is no one strategy
that will work for all companies. You can pick one,
use a combination of some or maybe come up with a
unique way to handle your exit. Be sure you take the
time and consideration this very important decision
deserves and that the end result will benefit you,
your investors and managers and will suit the needs
you have as you close this chapter of your life and
move on to new adventures.

When a mother is ob-
served providing for her
children (i.e. feeding them,
clothing them, maintaining
their health, etc.) the ob-
server can confidently say
that she loves her children.
Unfortunately, it can become easy for a mother to be
so focused on her children that she begins to neglect
herself. However, it is when a mother loves and cares
for herself, that she is fully capable of providing quali-
ty care to her children.
A mother who is stressed, tired, and un-
healthy mostly likely will not have the energy, mental
clarity, and positive attitude to provide quality care
for her children. According to Tuominen, Husus, Rai-
A Mother’s Love
By: Sonseeharay Robertson
tanen, and Luoto (2013) a pilot study showed that
less than a quarter of adults meet their physical activ-
ity recommendation. A poor diet, alcohol and tobac-
co abuse, and a sedentary lifestyle (which is fairly
common) can contribute to a lower quality of life.
This sort of lifestyle is witnessed by children and can
have a negative influence on the type of lifestyle they
choose as they get older. Whereas a mother who
consumes a well-balanced diet, allows herself ample
time for rest and recovery each day, and restricts her
indulgence of alcohol and tobacco will potentially be
alert and have the energy to play with, as well as pro-
vide for, her children while maintaining a positive atti-
tude and positively influencing her children’s lifestyle
choices.
As Mother’s Day is fast approaching each
mother is encouraged to take time to consider their
current state of health and wellbeing and then devise
a plan to improve, if necessary. This way, in addition
to giving thanks for the gifts that will be received on
Mother’s Day, you will also be able to reassure your
loved-ones that you will continue to enjoy these gifts,
and most importantly them, longer because you are
taking proper measures to maintain a high quality of
life.

It’s that time of year
again! Everyone is busy
focusing on mom this
time of month, but don’t
forget dad needs some
relaxation too (Father’s
Day is June 19th)! While
everyone works hard to show their mom how much
they care, there is always room to find ways to help
dad relax too. We all know how hard it is to find a
little relaxation time! There are a lot of ways to help
dad relax this year.
Initially you may think of all the well-known
ways dads get their relaxation time…watching a
game, hanging out in the back yard, or working on a
project; however, here are some creative relaxation
tips that dad can squeeze in even during the busiest
of days. Exercise is great to get blood flowing and en-
dorphins pumping. Grab dad a jump rope! Any kind of
exercise is good at reducing stress. Jump roping is a
quick exercise that dad can do throughout the day
(Inhabitat, 2016). You can also show dad this quick
trick to feel just as rejuvenated. It’s called the leg
lean. Put your legs up against a wall while lying on
your back. Leave a slight angle so that your legs are
not straight against the wall at 90 degrees. Hold this
for 1-5 minutes. Laying in this position can be as re-
freshing as taking a nap (Parents, 2016). Acupressure
is also a good way to relax, but there are some great
points that you can do yourself. Find the tender in-
dention in your breast bone with your middle and in-
dex finger. Apply a gentle pressure while breathing
slowly. This reduces anxiety and promotes deep
breathing giving the added benefit of quick relaxation
(Parents, 2016). There are many tricks that can help
dad relax this upcoming Father’s Day! Sending dad
out on a walk, helping him with a project, or making
sure he gets some time to unwind. Make sure no
matter what you have in mind for him that you offer a
couple of these tricks too! After all there’s no limit to
what a dad deserves!

Cream Cheese Glaze:
4 Tablespoons butter
2 ounces cream cheese
1 1/4 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
Prepare Cinnamon Filling: In a medium bowl,
mix butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. Scoop
the filling into a small zip baggie and set aside.
Prepare Pancake batter: In a medium bowl
whisk together flour, baking powder and salt.
Whisk in milk, oil and egg just until batter is
moistened. (a few small lumps are fine)
Prepare Cream Cheese glaze: In a medium
bowl, heat the butter and cream cheese until
melted. Whisk together until smooth, then
whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla.
Heat a large griddle over medium-low heat.
Spray with non-stick cooking spray. Scoop
about 1/2 cup of pancake batter onto the skil-
let. Snip the corner of your cinnamon filling
baggie and squeeze a spiral of the filling onto
the top of the pancake. When bubbles begin to
appear on the surface, flip carefully with a
spatula and cook until lightly browned on the
underside, 1 to 2 minutes more.
When ready to serve, spoon warmed cream
cheese glaze on top of each pancake. Enjoy!
