To summarize:

Direct explicit instruction in text structure facilitates comprehension in any age student.

Why Informative? At K-5 children had already had more direct and indirect exposure to the narrative structure.

The increased rigor and shifts in the ELA standards place an emphasis on informative AND narrative writing- understanding structure in ANY text improves comprehension.

Intentional – Explicit Instruction Informative writing has 5 basic structures:

Problem and Solution Description Compare and Contrast Chronology/Sequence Cause and Effect

Teach each structure and then next in the instructional sequence, show how several forms can be present in one piece of text.

These informative text structure templates from the module have the structure definition, signal words, comprehension questions and possible graphic organizers to use.
