Welcome to Juneau County
Juneau County, Wisconsin was established in 1857 when the State of Wisconsin passed legislation
separating lands west of the Wisconsin River from what was then Adams County. After a contest with neighboring New Lisbon, the county seat was established in Maugh's Town, which is known today as Mauston. The county was named after Solomon Juneau, a Milwaukee legislator who influenced the legislation establishing Juneau County. The county board of early Juneau County convened only once a year to conduct the business of the slow moving, remote county.
Today, Juneau County retains the charm of the early days, while it moves forward into the future of electronic government.
Juneau County is your pathway to adventure. Whether you’re spending some time on our beautiful lakes, rivers or streams, hiking or biking our many trails, enjoying a round of golf, taking your family on an ATV adventure, snowmobiling on a groomed trail, relaxing by your campfire after a day of exploring or enjoying the many tastes of Juneau County.
Juneau County's natural beauty brings year round pleasure to area residents and visitors alike. Geographical diversity is a hallmark of Juneau County. From sand country to hill country, from northern forests to unglaciated “driftless areas,” we have beautiful and scenic landscapes.
Our blend of geography satisfies even the most particular tastes. How many counties can boast of this natural variety?
Castle Rock and Petenwell lakes, the second- and fourth-largest lakes in Wisconsin
Three major recreational trails, the Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail, the Omaha Trail, and 400 State Bike Trail
Rock formations such as Castle Rock and Petenwell Rock
The beautiful sandstone cliffs of the Wisconsin River
Some of the most beautiful and best golf courses in the region
Native American effigies and other sites
Several wildlife viewing areas, such as the Sprague Mather Flowage, Eagle's Nest, and the Necedah Wildlife Refuge, a national wildlife preserve
Breathtaking bluffs, including Target Bluff, Mill Bluff, and Mile Bluff
First, some history is in order. Most of what is today’s Juneau County was carved out of the sandstone bedrock during the last North American Glacial Period some 18,000 years ago. For a long time, Juneau County was covered by the glacial Lake Wisconsin. The lake (up to 150’ deep) stretched over 1,800 sq. miles from

Tomah to the west and up to Stevens Point in the north. A huge natural dam formed by rock, earth and sand burst some 14,000 years ago. After three days it took to drain the lake, the runoff created a new course for the Wisconsin River, carved out the Wisconsin Dells and moved south toward Baraboo to create Devil’s Lake.
The rocky outcroppings, called buttes or bluffs, you see throughout the central and northern part of the county are really the tops of islands that dotted the surface of glacial Lake Wisconsin. If you’re ambitious, climbing to the top of one of these ‘islands’ shows you the outline of the old lake. The low and sandy prairies you see are the old lakebed.
Much of the southern part of the county escaped the destructive force of the last glacial period and is part of the
“driftless” region of Wisconsin. Deep valleys, high ridges and quiet rural life make this area a special place to visit.
Add to that the quiet joy of some of the nation’s finest bike trails, canoeing on the Lemonweir and Wisconsin River, golfing, horseback riding, hiking, snowmobiling, ATV riding, hunting, fishing, antiquing, waterskiing and camping, you’re in for a rare treat.
We invite you to embark on your Juneau County adventure. We know you’ll find a reason to stay for a day, a week, or a lifetime.

The Wisconsin, Baraboo, and Lemonweir Rivers are all fantastic opportunities to view miles of scenic shorelines in Juneau County. You will have plenty of canoeing and rafting opportunities, and access and canoe rentals are available at various businesses along the rivers throughout Juneau County.
The Baraboo River offers a relaxing outing with no rapids or falls. It flows 100 miles uninterrupted from its headwaters near Hillsboro, Wisconsin, winding through Juneau County to unite with the Wisconsin River south of Portage, Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin River offers miles of open waters for canoeing and offers breathtaking scenery and many islands to stop and explore. Take along a camera because you are sure to see a lot of wildlife and gorgeous panoramic views.
Navigate the Lemonweir River from western Juneau County to its mouth on the Wisconsin River. The current on the river picks up a bit in a few spots but for the most part is a leisurely ride down river for a relaxing trip. Portages are necessary at a couple of dams if you want to go more than several miles. A number of sloughs near the mouth can make it difficult to keep on the main channel, so be sure you have your map or compass handy.
Both Castle Rock Lake and Petenwell Flowage have areas suitable for canoeing and kayaking, however keep in mind these are big bodies of water and have a lot of motorized boat traffic, so use caution when planning your trip.

The winery's first grapes were planted in 1997. Vines have been added yearly since and more will follow.
Building construction began July 15, 2003 with planning and design starting in 2000. Almost immediately revisions were necessary in order to incorporate an amazing auction find... several 100 year old stained glass windows. Burr Oak Winery offers both red and white wines. Personal preferences vary, so taste for yourself.
Our Gallery is "Home to the Hickory Hills Arts" group, which consists of all types of creative people from visual artists to writers, designers, woodcarvers, musicians, chefs, needlework, beadwork, photography, dance, healers, etc.
We invite artisans to contact us for possible displays and selling.
HHA meets at the Winery the last Tuesday of every month at 7 pm. Come join us and have some fun being creative.

The Boorman HouseThis 1876 Victorian mansion was built by Benjamin C. Boorman, a native of England. In 1864, he bought the Mauston dam, mills and water rights from the estate of M. M. Maughs. After a fire that destroyed the mills, he rebuilt a mill on the northside of the Lemonweir River to produce flour and feed. Later he built a sawmill and a wool carding mill on the south side of the dam and began con-struction of the Boorman House in 1874. The home features a grand staircase, a drawing room and a widow's walk.
The Boorman House is now the home of the Juneau County Historical Society and showcases extensive collections of artifacts, records and research materials. Dr. McIntosh's medical office building is also preserved at the site and a build-ing housing agricultural implements, wagons and workshops was recently completed. The Boorman House is open on weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day and hosts a special Christmas
Open House beginning around Thanksgiving. The house is listed on the National Register of Historical Places.

Nestled in central Wisconsin is a landscape that was epitomized by early homesteaders as the Great Wisconsin Swamp. A mosaic habi-tat of sedge meadow, savanna, and pine-oak forest established in 1939, the area is an island of refuge—home to ringed-bog-hunter dragonflies, whooping cranes, trumpeter swans, wolves, Karner blue butterflies, badgers, and red-headed wood-peckers. Each species and habitat is monitored and maintained by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to ensure overall vigor within the 44,000-acre ecosystem.
Located four miles west of the Village of Necedah off of Hwy 21, the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge provides a range of unique opportunities for people to enjoy and learn about the natural world through hiking, wildlife watching, cross-country skiing, horseback and ATV riding, hunting, fishing, photography, berry picking, bird-ing and various educational events. Three established trails wind through various habitat types on the refuge, several observation decks, and refuge roads are open for use from sun-rise to sundown to allow visitors an opportunity to see wildlife. Beavers, porcupines, white-tailed deer, foxes or the occasional black bear and timber wolf are sometimes spotted.
Necedah National Wildlife Refuge is home to many rare species. It boosts one of the world’s largest populations of endangered Karner blue butter-flies. Additionally the refuge is the reintroduction site for an experimen-tal population of whooping cranes. Young cranes brought to the refuge from breeding facilities are trained to follow ultralight aircrafts from June through the first week in October. After learning, these young birds are led by the aircraft down to their wintering location at Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge in Florida. By the following spring in April, these same birds migrate back, unassisted, to central Wisconsin. Visit the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership online at www.bringbackthecranes.org to learn more about this fascinating project.
The Refuge Office includes exhibits, refuge brochures, and a giftshop. The office is located in the southern portion of the refuge along Grand Dike and Headquarters Road and is open 7:30am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.

JUNEAU COUNTY HiSTORY
The first known inhabitants of the area were the people of the Woodland Culture. Paintings
and carvings found in caves around New Lisbon date to 499 B.C. and effigy mounds located at Gee’s Slough outside of New Lisbon and in Armenia Township date from that period to 1200 A.D.
Artifacts contained in the Harry Mortensen Collection housed in the New Lisbon Memorial Library date from 500 to 1200 A.D. These semi-nomadic people hunted, gathered and farmed this area after the draining of glacial Lake Wisconsin some 14,000 years ago. These early people raised corn, squash and beans and harvested wild blueberries, cranberries and other wild fruit for use during their winter camps. Others harvested wild rice, buffalo, deer, moose and other wild game.
The Native Americans who greeted the first White traders and explor-ers in the 17th Century were pre-dominately Ho-Chunk. These people themselves migrated from the far west and were of Sioux origin. The famous trek of Jean Nicolet down the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers opened the area to fur trappers and traders.
The first known white settler of Juneau County was a fur trader named Frank Provonsal (also called Francis Charbonneau). His trading post on the Wisconsin River north of Petenwell Rock was established in 1828. Later trading posts were established at the head of the Lemonweir River in the 1830s and near Elroy on the Baraboo River in the 1850s.
The early history of the area includes ‘Pollard’s Rock’ on Seven Mile Bluff. About six miles east of Mauston on the south side of Hwy 12. Here, Blackhawk, the chief of the Sauk tribe, hid after many of his people were slaughtered at the Battle of Bad Axe in what is today Vernon County. Two Ho-Chunk tribe members betrayed his presence and the United States Army captured him. His capture marked the end of armed Indian resistance east of the Mississippi River.
The rivers of Juneau County were the highways that allowed exploration. Rivers such as the Wisconsin, the Lemonweir, the Yellow and the Baraboo were used to harvest the abundant natu-ral resources of the county and early settlements along those rivers included Mauston, New Lisbon, Necedah, Elroy and Wonewoc. After the period of early exploration, trading posts and sawmills sprang up to harvest the abundant pine timber that covered the county.
As the trees were cut and as the land was stripped, agriculture took hold. Crops of summer wheat, tobacco, corn, sphagnum moss, hops, grains and cranberries were harvested, sold and traded by early farmers who survived brutal winters and the backbreaking task of eking a living out of the land.
Much of the land, especially in the north-ern part of the county, was unsuitable for agriculture and the sandy, light soil of the Lemonweir River Valley blew away during the spring. Add to this the difficulty and cost of getting good land from the many speculators who bought huge chunks of
the available land at government auc-tions and sold it for profit, and you begin to see the problems these early farm-ers faced. Even with these long odds, agriculture became the largest industry in the county and today still holds that position. The mix is different now than it was back then; dairy, hogs, sheep are more prevalent and wheat, hops and tobacco are no longer produced.
With the coming of the railroads in the mid-1800s, Juneau County’s geographi-cal location midway between Chicago and Minneapolis made it an important part of rail history. The City of Elroy was on the main line of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway and Mauston, New Lisbon and Camp Douglas were regular stops on the old Milwaukee Road.
The present Interstate system (I90-94) roughly parallels the Milwaukee Road as it cuts diagonally across the county. Necedah was served by the Chicago & Northwestern and served as an impor-tant rail point for access to northern and central Wisconsin. At one time, pas-senger service was available at many of these stops to connect Juneau County residents with the world. The Chicago & Northwestern Railroad beds around Elroy, Camp Douglas, Union Center and Wonewoc have been converted into bike trails including the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, the Omaha Trail and the ‘400’ Trail.
The beauty, history, and the Pathways to Adventure in Juneau County will continue to unfold on the follow-ing pages - sit back, read, and enjoy.
As part of Native American Awareness Week, the HoChunk Nation Education Department sponsored a traditional dance display at West Side Elementary School. James Morris of Mauston High School (left), Robert Morris of Grayside Elementary School (center) and Terrance Cleveland of Lyndon Station Middle School (right) perform a welcoming dance for West Side and Lyndon Station Elementary School students. Delano, Buster and David Cleveland of Lyndon Station Elementary School also performed in the assembly, as did their younger sister Jackie Cleveland, father Garrick Cleveland and uncle John Morris. Both the Morris and Cleveland family are part of the HoChunk Nation and have participated in and won traditional dance competitions in the past.

CAMP DOUgLAS
The Wisconsin National Guard Museum is located at his-toric Volk Field - Camp Williams, near the village of Camp Douglas. The surrounding area is famous for its tower-ing rock formations. The Museum is housed in an 1896 log lodge that has been restored to its original appearance. The modern interior contains 3,000 square feet of exhib-its, including full-scale and miniature dioramas, video and slide programs, and a light map of the Buna battlefield.
Follow the famed 32nd Division from the Mexican Border through five major offensives against German trenches. Called Les Terribles by the French, they adopt the RED ARROW as their distinctive emblem. Hundreds of Wisconsin Guardsmen fight with the 1st and 42nd Divisions in 1918. In World War Two the 32nd scores the first offensive victory against the Japanese, then logs a record 654 days of combat. Two battalions of artillery fight through Italy, and the 135th Medical Regiment supports troops from Australia to Japan.
Learn about the 1st and 2nd Regiments of Civil War Volunteers. Follow Wisconsin soldiers as they fight in Puerto Rico in 1898, then set the standard for National Guard excel-lence during the first decade of the Twentieth Century.
See how Camp Williams evolved from a swampy rifle range to a modern Air Combat Readiness Training Center. Two rooms profile 50 years of the Wisconsin Air National Guard.
Trace 20 years of the all-Wisconsin 32nd Division, called to a year of active duty in 1961, and the quarter century of service of the 32nd Separate Infantry Brigade. Highlighted are the NIKE air defense role, the Vietnam years, Reforger deployments to Germany, and service in Desert Storm.

Castle Rock Family ATV Club
The Castle Rock ATV Club (CRFAC) was formed in 2002 to organize an effort to establish and maintain an ATV trail system in Juneau County that all recreational ATV users could use and enjoy. The mission was to have our county trail system link to neighboring counties and eventu-ally be an integral part of a state-wide trail system. The goal was to create, maintain, and preserve safe operation and use of ATV trails and routes in Northern Juneau County.
We are a Non-Stock Corporation established in 2002 and registered with the State of Wisconsin. We are a self-supporting club. The club is governed by a set of bylaws, which establishes a seven person Board of Directors that manages the club. Generally, the Board
of Directors meets monthly (anyone is welcome to attend) whereas the
general membership meetings are held approximately 4-6
times a year which includes the annual meeting held in February of each year. Our main on-going goal is to establish and main-tain routes and trails in northern and central Juneau County, which include routes located in the Town of Necedah,
Village of Necedah, Town of Finley, Town of Kingston,
Town of Cutler, Town of Orange, Town of Armenia,
and Town of Germantown.

The CRFAC is a member of the Wisconsin ATV Association (WATVA). Its purpose is to help start, support, and promote local clubs including the Ride Smart Program, which trains local club members as ATV Safety Instructors. We have club members trained as ATV Safety Instructors and Trail Patrol Ambassadors. This pro-vides us the opportunity to offer Safety Certification Classes and patrol/moni-tor our routes and trail systems.
Our annual events include, but are not limited to, ATV rides, picnics, fundrais-ers (winter poker run), parade partici-pation, community service activities, and etc. We try to be an environmen-tally conscious club. We participate in highway/road litter pickup through Adopt-a Road/Trail partnership with the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge. Most recently, the CRFAC adopted Speedway Road within the Refuge in keeping the road free of litter, in promoting safe riding, and in engag-ing in education of ATV use in the National Wildlife Refuge System.
We strive to have a good time, ride safe and smart, and keep club members informed via membership meetings, our web site, and periodic group emails (please keep your email address up-to-date to receive event reminders and other club informa-tion). Our web site is www.crfatvc.com and our mailing address is PO Box 185 Necedah, WI 54646.
We welcome you to join our club, with your help and our members the trail/route system can only get better.

Motorcycle AdventuresWhether they are participating in the Prime Time Jimmy Kline Ride, taking in the vast scenery of the county, or on their way to Bala’s Harley Davidson in Mauston, the roar of motorcycles can be heard through-out the area during warm weather.
The hills of Elroy, Union Center and Wonewoc offer amazing self guided motorcycle tours and bluffs can be seen in many areas such as rural Mauston, Hustler and New Lisbon.
Motorcyclists can take North Hwy 58 to Necedah and take Hwy 21 to check out the National Wildlife Refuge, cross over to New Lisbon and Hustler on Hwy 80 and then come back to Mauston on Hwy 12/16. From there, they can drop down to Lyndon Station and explore that part of the county by taking county road HH.
The Prime Time Jimmy Kline Ride, held in August, begins at Point Bluff Resort in Adams County and travels through hills and valleys, across the Mississippi River before arriving in Lansing, Iowa. Funds raised go to fight cancer.
For more information about the ride, contact ride organizer Dennis Nielsen at 608-547-2697 or log onto: www.primetimejimmykline.com.

Pathways to Adventure
Snowmobile Adventures
Snowmobiling in Juneau County is a lot of things. It’s shooting along a well-groomed trail with your friends on a clear, crisp day watching the pines and scrub oak whiz by. It’s traveling on a moonlight night with somebody special riding behind you as you wind your way to that favorite bar and grill. It’s stopping to watch a herd of whitetails disappear in a flash or listening to the sounds of the woods before moving on.
We have hundreds of miles of trails that are well-groomed and clearly marked thanks to the efforts of our local snowmobile clubs. You’ll enjoy the many changes of scenery as you travel through Juneau County. The southern portion (south of Mauston) has rolling hills, deep valleys and plenty of forest land. The area is part of Wisconsin’s ‘driftless’ region that was spared the destructive force of the last glacial period some 14,000 years ago. You’ll find quiet beauty and quaint cities and villages as you travel the region. The northern part of the
trail covers 32 miles of an abandoned Chicago & Northwestern Railroad bed and has no more than a 3 % grade at any point. The trail passes through three tunnels as it makes its way toward Sparta and we recommend flashlights and jackets for tunnels. The Elroy-Sparta State Bike Trail links with the La Crosse River Trail in Sparta.
The '400' State Trail is often called the most scenic trail in the Wisconsin State Trail System. It's named for the Chicago & Northwestern passenger train that traveled the 400 miles from Chicago to Minneapolis in 400 minutes. The 22 miles of smooth, hard-packed lime-stone parallels or crosses the Baraboo River the entire length between Elroy and Reedsburg. A recent addition to the trail links Hillsboro to the south.
The Juneau County Omaha Bike Trail is 12.5 miles of seal-coated trail owned and maintained by Juneau County and has a separate trail fee. It also follows an abandoned Chicago & Northwestern Railroad bed all the way to Camp Douglas and opened in the spring of 1992. The Omaha Trail is the most peaceful and secluded of our trails.
For more information on these trails, as well as trail maps you can download, visit our website at www.www.juneaucounty.com

county is much flatter than the south but has much more forested land. Pine woods are the primary feature but there’s lots of scrub oak and aspen to make your journey interesting.
The northern trail takes you through the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge with its large expanses of prairie and wetlands. Here, the endangered whooping crane is being trained to migrate to Florida and return to NNWR to help establish a breeding flock. Chances are they will be sunning themselves in Florida when you travel the refuge but if you listen really close, you might be able to hear their calls.
For those of you who crave competi-tion, several of our businesses on Castle Rock Lake sponsor sanctioned time trials on the ice during the season. If the ice is right, you can even traverse the lake to visit the eastern shore but we urge you to be careful. It’s a mighty big lake and it takes a while for it to freeze over so it’s safe to use.
We encourage you to come and visit us during the snowmobile season.
Bike AdventuresThe many bike trails of Juneau County are just waiting for your visit. They all begin (or end) in Elroy WI, located on Hwys 80-82 in southwestern Juneau County. The Elroy-Sparta State Bike Trail is the “Granddaddy of All Trails.“ It was the very first Rails to Trails Conversion in the United Sates in 1965. The hard-packed limestone

The whooping crane success story began in 2001 when eight chicks conditioned to follow their ultralight surrogate par-ents began their first fall migration south from the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge in October. Seven of the whoop-ers safely made it to Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge in Florida and
five successfully completed an unassisted return migration
back to central Wisconsin in the spring of 2002.
That same year, biologists and pilots at the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge conditioned a second group and guided 17 juvenile cranes south. One was lost during migration when it collided with an ultralight but the survivors returned north in the spring of 2003. Also during
2003, another 'class' of chicks were hatched and brought to Necedah Refuge. This third class learned to fly longer and sooner than any of the previous classes and headed south in October of 2003. The story will repeat itself for several more years until a successful breeding flock is established east of the Mississippi River.
To ensure the impressionable cranes remain wild, project biologists and pilots adhere to a strict no-talking rule, broadcast recorded crane calls and wear costumes designed to mask the human form when-ever they are around the cranes. Residents in the seven-state, Wisconsin to Florida flyway, should keep their eyes on the sky in the fall for the telltale white forms of whooping cranes gliding on the wind.

Both on the Beautiful Wisconsin RiverGo Rolling Down the River & Stop in at the Rock
Two Great Resorts on One Great River!
The Lakes region of Juneau and Adams counties has something for every-one. Both Castle Rock and Petenwell Lakes are created by power dams on the Wisconsin River. The river forms the eastern boundary of the county.
Castle Rock Lake is the fourth largest inland lake in Wisconsin and offers plenty of fish-ing, camping and boating. Buckhorn State Park, Castle Rock Park and Germantown Park offers visitors plenty of space to picnic and enjoy the view. Many campsites and resorts surround the lake and boat launches are plentiful. Whether your thing is jet skiing or sailing, there's plenty of big water for you to enjoy for a day, a week or a lifetime.
Petenwell Lake is the second largest inland lake in Wisconsin, and is well known for its great fishing. Walleyes, northern pike, muskies and pan fish are plentiful and there's plenty of public boat launches available. The lake is 23,000+ acres over a 36 sq. mile area. It was created in 1948 by dam-ming the Wisconsin River near Necedah. Its maximum depth is over 40' and is well-known for its excellent fishing and waterfowling. American eagles winter at the dam and can be observed daily during the season. Camping at Wilderness Park on Petenwell Lake ranges from full hookup to primitive and the scenery is great.
