KENNEL CLUB EVENTS DURING THE PANDEMIC
Continued on page 3
On May 13, the Kennel Club issued a statement
to emphasise that the safety and security of competitors, spectators, volunteers and staff at Kennel Club events continues to be of paramount importance. In light of the continued restrictions as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Kennel Club has taken the decision with regret to extend its strong recommendation that
clubs and societies cancel forthcoming events until the end of September and that serious consideration should be given to events due to be held after this date.
This latest recommendation is based on all advice issued by the Government so far which continues to restrict non-essential travel and maintain social distancing. The Kennel Club also recommends that alternative arrangements continue to be put in place regarding other activities such as meetings, seminars and training classes.
The latest advice on the situation regarding Covid-19 is regularly updated and changes daily and we strongly suggest that clubs and societies keep

The show scheduled pedigree classes
across the seven groups, as well as novelty categories open to pedigree and crossbreed dogs alike, such as Prettiest Bitch and Best Rescue. A grand total of 39,276 entries across 21 classes was received.
The Kennel Club website reached 28,529 users and had 56,198 page views and the term ‘online dog show’ ranked number 1 on Google. The show highlighted pedigree breeds, as well as helped to educate the general public on which breeds are included in which group.
This is tremendous engagement for the Kennel Club with its customers during the current lockdown, a situation which could quite have easily made people feel cut off. Instead, they have loved sharing their photos and videos
of their beloved dogs with the Kennel Club!
Via the press, the online dog show has reached an additional 21 million people so far – having featured in the Mail Online three times, Hello! Online, as well as in print in
the Daily Mail, Daily Star, Scottish Daily Mail and the Sunday Mirror. The show was also mentioned on the Jeremy Vine Show on Channel 5.
There is still national press interest in the winners and Channel 4 are featuring the winners and some entries on a special programme they are currently making which will be screened later this year. There has also been coverage of the show via radio and newspaper at regional level.
Photos and the final list of winners can be viewed at bit.ly/3g0zJhh
Launched in mid April, the Kennel Club online dog show ran over three weeks and reached a total of 2,474,742 people across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

NEWS from the Kennel Club
More news >>>
In April, the Kennel Club, the Kennel Club Charitable Trust (KCCT) and the Kennel Club Educational Trust (KCET)
announced their intention to support canine organisations in their communities which may be suffering genuine financial hardship as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Many applications were received with difficult decisions having to be made for where funds needed to be allocated most urgently.
Decisions have now been taken to the amount or monies and the organisations where monies will be donated. Twenty rescue charities will be receiving money from the KCCT.
One of the charities to receive help has been Friends of Animals Wales, through whom Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his fiancée Carrie Symonds
acquired their Jack Russell Terrier ‘Dilyn’ last year. Eileen Jones, rescue coordinator for the charity, said: “We are very grateful for the extra funds provided to us by the KCCT as we have been very much affected by Covid-19. Our Community Respite Care Project
has seen an increase in requests for help and we currently have an additional 18 dogs in our care as a result of current health or housing issues. Some owners are hospitalised, some sadly now deceased.”
Revd. Bill King, Chairman of the Kennel Club Charitable Trust said: “We have received
a significant number of applications for our emergency funding and have had to make some very hard decisions on where funds need to be placed as a matter of urgency.
“We would like to say a big thank you to Our Dogs newspaper for their support for the KCCT Emergency Relief Initiative. Thanks to the campaign, the Trust has received over £40,000 generously donated by readers.
“We are particularly grateful for the donation of £35,000 from the British Chihuahua Club Rescue Association. Margaret Foote, the co-ordinator/treasurer of BCCRA explained that it was after seeing the appeal in Our Dogs that she wanted to contribute as she wanted to support smaller breed rescues, following help from a small rescue that she had received.”
Making a donation to the KCCT is very simple. If you wish to donate online, please go to the secure Virgin Money Giving website at https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/KCCT.
A full press release, including details of how you can donate by text, can be found at bit.ly/2zR7mBx

NEWS from the Kennel Club
INTERNATIONAL CANINE HEALTH AWARDS
The International Canine Health Awards, which are organised by the Kennel Club Charitable Trust and underwritten by a major gift from Vernon and Shirley Hill of Metro Bank, highlight those individuals who go one step further to promote the health and wellbeing of dogs through their work in the world of veterinary science.
Whilst this year’s ceremony was unable to go ahead in the
wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 winners have been awarded their respective prize money and invited to
next year’s event to receive their commemorative plaques.
Launched at Crufts in 2012, the International Canine Health Awards were developed to recognise and reward innovative researchers, veterinary scientists and students who
A pioneering professor in veterinary molecular genetics, an internationally renowned professor in canine haematology and hereditary diseases, an MPhil student researching the pathophysiology of diabetes in dogs and a devoted Deerhound breed health coordinator have been announced as the winners of Europe’s most prestigious veterinary awards.
In May, the Kennel Club went through a rigorous audit which
analysed its GDPR policies and procedures. We are therefore pleased to announce that the Kennel Club has been accepted as a Data & Marketing Association (DMA) member.
Being part of the DMA, a not-for-profit trade
association which helps regulate the marketing industry, ensures that the Kennel Club is compliant with the law while ensuring that its direct marketing is valuable to the customer and to it as an organisation. The DMA logo will now appear on all the Kennel Club’s communications,
and shows our customers that we are committed to protecting their data.
Being part of the DMA also means the Kennel Club has access to free legal advice, so if it has a query on its data collection, email and
direct marketing or what it can and can’t do with its data then it can turn to the DMA to provide impartial
advice. This will help the Kennel Club make sure it is making the most of its data, while still complying with the law.
KENNEL CLUB BECOMES DMA MEMBER

Nominations for the awards were judged by a distinguished international panel of influential veterinarians and scientific researchers.
Professor Dr Tosso Leeb was awarded £40,000 for the International Award; Professor Dr Urs Giger, £10,000 for the Lifetime Achievement Award; Dr Valeria Bergomi, £10,000 for the Postgraduate Student Inspiration Award; and Dr Sarah Helps, £1,000 for the Breed Health Co-ordinator Award (accepted on behalf of the Deerhound breed).
