www.davislake.org Board of Directors Changes
The DLCA board of directors has accepted the
resignation of Brent Whittington, effective
May 1, 2008, due to job and family responsi-
bilities. Brent was elected to the board in
2007, served as president, and was instrumen-
tal in starting our volunteer program and get-
ting a reserve study for the community. The
board thanks him for his service.
With Brent's resignation, the board has voted
to appoint Betty Lee to fill his remaining
term. Betty currently serves, with her hus-
band Battey, on the Architectural Review
Committee and will now be our ARC Liaison
to the Board.

Recently I practiced my driving skills at the NASCAR Speedway Park at the Concord Mills Mall. I was outside for maybe 30
minutes. It was a warm day so I wore a tank top. Since I didn’t plan on being outside for a prolonged period of time, I didn’t use
sunscreen (except on my face). When I got home I noticed that my shoulders were burned. I try my best to take care of my skin,
so I was a little disappointed that I didn’t take precautions. So it is time to remind ourselves of our summer skin routine.
Know how long it takes your skin to burn. Check which body parts burn faster and at what altitude you are at. I don’t rec-
ommend testing this often, but it really does help knowing.
Determine the SPF you need (at least SPF 15 for all skin). Take the amount of time it takes for your skin to burn and divide
by the minutes you plan on being in the sun. Also, check with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure any medications you may
be taking doesn’t make you more sensitive to the sun.
Cover up. The darker the clothing the better the protection. Also, wear sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat.
Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going outdoors, even on cloudy days. Thrown out sunscreen older than 3 years.
Stay out of the sun from 10-4p.m.
Now, that we have made it through the winter ho-hum, it’s time to bask in the warmth of the sun. Let’s do it responsibly.

Trainer Tips and Tidbits Summer, Sun, and Skin By Caroline Richard
BOsS (Business Owners Spotlight) Wayne McNeil started his own business in October 2000, but has been in home improvement for
more than 25 years. He likes working for himself and enjoys the feeling of satisfaction after a job
well done. The best reward is a happy customer.
Wayne had been looking for a home in Davis Lake for about a year. He missed out on a couple
homes, so when the house off Chestnut Knoll became available, he moved quickly to make the deal.
He liked the fact that home owners in Davis Lake take pride in their homes and yards. He thought it
would be a good place to live--and it is!
Wayne used to have a vinyl siding company by the name of Carefree Exteriors. He eventually sold
his half to his partner. When it came time to name his new business he thought about the service that
he provides. One of his main products is a high end coating for all kinds of surfaces that is cost ef-
fective and virtually maintenance free. So he came up with Carefree Coatings as the name. His busi-
ness does inside/outside painting, windows and small wood repair jobs.
Wayne is single and most of his family is from N. Wilkesboro. He has often said that his single
status allows him to be on call 24-7. For more information about the services and what some of his
customers had to say about his products and performance, go to carefreecoatings.net .

photos. Here are our favorites from each contestant. Be
on the look out for more of their pictures in the mast-

Go Green! source: www.treehugger.com
This month’s suggestions for preparing
earth-friendly meals will turn you into a
greener gourmet in no time.
1. Make It Last—Choose cookware
and utensils that stand the test of time
and won’t have to be thrown away with
your leftover casserole. Go for stainless
steel or cast iron Although a bit of an
investment, a good cast iron skillet will
last for generations. Likewise, choose
sturdy utensils rather than cheap ones.
Buy high-quality knives that you can
sharpen by hand, and use long-lasting
cloth towels instead of paper.
2. Energy Smackdown: Gas vs. Elec-
tric—Many cooks prefer gas because
it's easier to control temperatures; it also
offers instant-on heat, and doesn't waste
much heat when the cooking is done. If
you're a gas devotee shopping for a new
stove, know that the lower the BTU
output, the more energy-efficient your
stove will be. With electricity, the most
efficient stoves are those that use induc-
tion elements, which transfer electro-
magnetic energy directly to the pan,
leaving the cook-top itself relatively
cool and using less than half the energy
of standard coil elements.
3 Energy-Efficient Cooking—Make
the best use of the oven as possible -
cook more than one thing at once, for
instance. For small dishes, using a
toaster oven, or reheating in a micro-
wave will also save energy. When cook-
ing on the stove, use a properly sized
pot for each of the stove burners, and
close-fitting lids whenever possible,
which helps in reducing cooking time.
Pressure cookers are another great way
to save energy, reducing cooking time
by up to 70 percent.
4. Buy Local—The food you bring into
your kitchen is just as important as the
gadgets and appliances you have there,
so buy local whenever you can. Food
miles have risen near the top of eco-
friendly food considerations, and the
fewer miles from farm to table, the bet-
ter. Whenever possible, we recommend
supporting a community supported agri-
culture (CSA) co-op, buying from local
farmers' markets or purchasing directly
from farmers themselves.
5. Bulk Up—Buy in bulk and cook in
bulk; just make sure you can consume
what you purchase and produce. Pur-
chasing from the bulk bins mean less
packaging, and fewer trips to the store,
and can also mean financial savings.
6. Waste Not, Want Not—Avoid over-
sized portions; if you are regularly
throwing food away then you are buy-
ing, and cooking, too much. Reuse
what you can, like old glass jars or bot-
tles, grocery bags, and packaging you
can't avoid. Recycle any and all pack-
aging that you can not reuse.
7. Green Kitchens Can Be Clean
Kitchens—There are plenty of natural
cleaning companies that produce non-
toxic, biodegradable, plant-based deter-
gents. You can also create your own
cleaning products using everyday ingre-
dients such as vinegar and baking soda.
8. Remodeling? Recycle—Making
your old kitchen work is the greenest
option, but if you need to upgrade or
replace, look first at salvage and an-
tiques. Look for kitchen fittings, floors,
paneling, and cabinets that have had a
previous life. If you’re trading things
out, be sure to offer them on Freecycle
(www.freecycle.org) or Craigslist
(www.craigslist.org) before kicking
them to the curb. There are plenty of
green options for new materials too.
Green countertops made of recycled
paper and yoghurt pots, to bamboo and
cork flooring.
Preparations for the 2008 Triad Swim Sea-
son are underway and coaches Morgan
Allen, Ashlee Brust, Kala Brust and Laura
Donato are laying the groundwork for a
successful season for a Dolphin team of
over 120 competitors, ages 5-18.
Swim team families should check
their swimmer’s folder every day for
important and current team informa-
tion.
In addition to long-time team sponsor
(and former Davis Lake resident) Dr.
David Paquette (Paquette Orthodon-
tics), the Dolphins are proud to an-
nounce that Chick-Fil-A of Davis
Lake has become our second major
sponsor. Shelby Hepler, owner/
operator has generously contributed to
the cost of providing a pool bag to all
swimmers in 2008! Thanks to his and
Dr. Paquette’s generous contributions,
the team will be outfitted with team
shirts and bags. Please support these
neighbor businesses who support the
Davis Lake community.
Practice schedule:
May 19th - June 9th Monday - Thursday
(evening practice); 5:30-8:00pm.
June 11th - July 11th Monday - Thursday
(morning practice) Time TBA.
Be on the look-out for your neighbor Dol-
phins selling tickets for the Spaghetti din-
ner and Dive-in movie (Ratatouille). All
proceeds will benefit team activities and
all foods, supplies and efforts will be vol-
unteered by Dolphin families. See calendar
for dates.

Nuclear Safety by Kathryn McLaughlin
Davis Lake is within the10-mile zone of the McGuire Nuclear
power plant and very nearly within the 10-mile zone for the
Catawba power plant. Those who live and work with in this
radius are subject to special consideration if there is an emer-
gency.
There is a siren on David Cox Rd. which will alert our residents
to an ―event.‖ There are four classifications of emergency for a
nuclear station:
Unusual Event-- for a minor problem, no danger to the
public
Alert--an event that reduce the station’s level of safety, no
danger to the public. State, county and Duke officials
would get emergency operations ready for use, if needed.
Site Area Emergency-event that could involve major prob-
lems with station systems. County officials would sound
the siren. Radio and TV stations would provide information
and instructions.
General Emergency-the most serious classification. Sirens
would be sounded. State and local authorities would take
action to protect the public. Radio and TV emergency alert
stations would provide information and instructions. Sta-
tions are 107.9 WLNK and 103.7 WSOC.
Sirens are tested on a quarterly basis. The remaining dates for
2008 are July 9 and October 8. Tests last three minutes. In an
emergency siren would sound repeatedly.
The Duke Energy web site provides detailed information re-
garding emergencies and preparedness in the following areas:
-radiation-get the facts
-emergency classifications, outlined above
-special assistance-if one has a special situation, let Duke know
beforehand
-sheltering and evacuation-location of shelters (ours is UNCC)
and items to bring
-services provided at reception centers/shelters
-agricultural information-effect of nuclear emergency on agri-
culture
-nuclear security-how Duke keeps each plant secure
-pet information-state health regulations prohibit pets in recep-
tion centers/shelters. Tips on providing for pets in an emer-
gency.
