Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Lawrence:
I believe I’ve treasure hunted most of my life.
When I was young and lived near the White River, I
would always go down and search for the biggest fish
that I could find – among all the dead fish that
covered the river as far as one could see. To me it
was a treasure.
In second grade, I received a penny in change
that was a 1914-S – the oldest penny I had ever seen
at that time. Tom Hadley, a classmate, offered me a
quarter for it which I accepted. Then I pursued the
treasure hunt of coins, art and books. In spare time I
enjoy treasure hunting in antique and Goodwill
stores.
All these earthly treasures give a joy for a while
but cannot satisfy the deeper hunger we carry within
us -- that deeper hunger is for God. Our human
hearts were designed to be infinite so only the infinite
can satisfy the hunger. St. Augustine clearly
recognized this in the wisdom he left behind: “Our
hearts are restless, O Lord, until they rest in you.”
The deep hunger in our hearts is our hunger for
God. Did you ever imagine that what your heart is
experiencing is God’s hunger for you – perhaps it is
His infinite hunger for us that we experience.

for the Solidarity Fund for the Church
in Africa (SFCA). While the Church in
Africa is growing, many still lack
access to basic resources and pastoral
care. Many suffer due to high rates of
poverty and unemployment, illiteracy, and poor
education. The SFCA supports pastoral projects that
foster lasting peace and reconciliation in a continent

The stewardship way of life could be described as a
daily pursuit of the kingdom of heaven. In our Gospel
passage from Matthew today, Jesus
employs three parables to describe this
kingdom.
In the first of today’s parables, our
Lord reminds us that living for Him
and for His kingdom will be costly. But
the deep joy that comes in following
Him makes the “price” entailed worth
it. Jesus says, “The kingdom of heaven
is like a treasure buried in a field which
a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and
sells all that he has and buys that field.” Next, He says the
kingdom of heaven is “like a merchant searching for fine
pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and
sells all he has and buys it.”
In each of these stories, the kingdom of heaven is
somewhat “hidden.” We must intentionally search for it
amidst the noise of the world that bombards us. Yet, our
Lord reminds us that His Kingdom is meant for everyone
and He wants us to find it! He says, “It is like a net thrown
into the sea which collects fish of every kind.”
But Jesus concludes His teaching with a rather
ominous image, reminding us that every “fish” will also
be judged as good or bad. “The angels will go out and
separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them
into the fiery furnace.” This is a description that is
difficult to forget. Clearly Jesus wants to get our attention.
Let us pray for the wisdom to recognize the kingdom
of heaven in our midst and intensify our efforts to pursue
it starting right now. There is no time to lose, and we will
obtain the immeasurable joy that only comes when we live
as disciples of Jesus.

A SHARE IN GOD’S KINGDOM
Today concludes a three-week series of Gospel
texts in which we have listened to a total of seven
parables about the Kingdom. The believer is asked to
consider the request that God made of Solomon in
today’s first reading: “Ask something of me and I
will give it to you” (1 Kings 3:5). Today’s parables
about the treasure buried in the field and the pearl of
great price should prompt us to answer, “A share in
your kingdom, O God!” Today we discover that the
kingdom of God is beyond value, a priceless treasure.
Unfortunately, our culture bombards us with things
that it believes are priceless treasures—the bigger and
better SUVs, anti-aging and anti-balding creams and
salves, miracle diets, and so much more. Having a
share in God’s kingdom and helping to bring about
that kingdom are the greatest treasures that we can

SAINT MARTHA (first century)
July 29
Whether you find Martha Stewart admirable or
annoying, she has the perfect patron saint. Luke describes
Martha—saint, not Stewart—as “burdened with much
serving” (Luke 10:40). About Mary, seated, listening to
Jesus, Martha complained, “Do you not care that my sister
has left me by myself to do the serving?” Jesus’ response,
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many
things . . . Mary has chosen the better part” (10:41, 42),
suggests to some the superiority of the contemplative life,
leaving the rest of us, supporting families, earning livings,
(helping others?), as second-class Christians. But Luke
introduces Martha and Mary immediately after Jesus’
parable of the Good Samaritan, whom Jesus recommends
as a model of practical compassion, concluding, “Go and
do likewise” (10:37). Go and do! Sit and listen!
Discipleship is never either/or but both/and. Jesus
ministered in prayerful silence and hospitable service.
Monastic calendars add Martha’s sister, Mary, and
brother, Lazarus, calling all three “hosts of the Lord,”
recalling their welcome of Jesus to their home in Bethany,
reminding us Whom we welcome whenever we extend

PATIENT TRUST
Above all, trust in the slow work of God.
We are quite naturally impatient in everything
to reach the end without delay. We should like
to skip the intermediate stages. We are impatient
of being on the way to something unknown,
something new.
And yet it is the law of all progress that it is made
by passing through some stages of instability—
and that it may take a very long time.
And so I think it is with you; your ideas mature
gradually—let them grow, let them shape
themselves, without undue haste. Don’t try
to force them on, as though you could be today
what time (that is to say, grace and circumstances
acting on your own good will) will make of you
tomorrow.
Only God could say what this new spirit gradually
forming within you will be. Give Our Lord the
benefit of believing that his hand is leading you,
and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself in
suspense and incomplete.
