BUG Awards at Jim Pattison Toyota Northshore
In June, Jim Pattison Toyota Northshore gave BUG Awards to 2 of its staff members for Being Unusually Good! Congratulations to Sonam Choekyi and Marilou Lowe. These two ladies are the hardest workers around and are always going above and beyond. Thank you both for the amazing work that you do for the dealership!
Hyundai at FIFA Women’s World Cup
The FIFA Women’s World Cup was all the rage and fun in June, especially in Vancouver! Hyundai was a big part of the promotions of FIFA Women’s World Cup celebrations downtown, where we had booths and displays of Hyundai vehicles while chatting with the soccer fans as they pass by. David Bremsak, our Manager of Dealership Support, was on scene to represent Jim Pattison Hyundai and take part in all the soccer fun!

Birthday Celebrations at Jim Pattison Volvo of Coquitlam
Surprise! That’s how Jim Pattison Volvo of Coquitlam celebrates birthdays! In June, the team at Jim Pattison Volvo of Coquitlam celebrated Gar, Glenn and Dani’s birthdays with a surprise party. It was quite the shindig with cakes, flowers, balloons, and giant coneheads! Happy birthday!

Steve Wong Featured in Tech Pro
In the Summer issue of Toyota University’s Tech Pro, our very own Steve Wong at Jim Pattison Toyota Downtown was featured for his amazing story of building his workstation out of computer parts destined for landfill.
Steve’s story, like most computer savvy ‘kids’, started with a desire to create his own personal computer workstation in the shop but because of some fortuitous events it ended with him not only building his own, but building three more that have been placed around his dealer’s shop to help the other techs.
Steve is an avid computer geek who had previously built his own computers. When his dealer recently moved into a temporary location as part of a larger move and rebuild, he noticed that they were throwing out a lot of the old outdated computer equipment. With permission from his managers, he started salvaging components and soon had enough parts to build four computer workstations; one for himself and the other three for general use in the shop.
As well as tinkering with computers, Steve is a self-confessed Trekkie and says he is often guided by something Geordi LaForge said to Mr. Scott when Scott was trying to repair his older ship with parts from the next generation ship. Mr. Scott was full of doubt but Geordi was confident that the old technology would be OK and said “ ...just because something is old, doesn’t mean you just throw it away!”
This is a great example of a tech taking things a step beyond his work responsibilities to not just improve his own situation but help all his mates in the
service department. I think the best way to finish this story is to use Steve’s own words taken directly from his message to us:
I feel very blessed to have found a company and a career which allows such fulfillment in my life. It can be easy at times; it can be difficult at times. Regardless, each situation has its merits and always results in a learning opportunity and self-growth as an individual. I wake up in the morning excited for what the day will bring. It gives me a positive attitude, looking forward to the day and not knowing what it will bring but knowing my mind and body will be engaged and challenged. It removes that mundane quality of a typical 9 to 5 job and I believe
gives a very fluid foundation to improve oneself by always seeing and discovering new aspects of vehicles and technology (even on my own personal time) and at the same time gaining more experience and learning new ways to improve my work and habits. In turn, this translates into my personal life and shapes me into a better person outside of work also. That is, I think, the essence of Toyota’s Kaizen and I truly believe it. - Steve Wong

Help Fill a Dream at Jim Pattison Hyundai Nanaimo
On June 27, Jim Pattison Hyundai Nanaimo hosted a charity event to raise money for Help Fill A Dream. The dealership hosted a car wash and barbeque and collected donation for the great cause. Help Fill A Dream is an immediately responsive charitable foundation based in Victoria, and they provide hope, help and happiness for children with life-threatening conditions by giving them improvements to quality of life, facilitating the dream of going to Disneyland, meeting a celebrity or sports hero, and even providing financial support. The dealership collected $695 through this fundraising effort.
Management Conference
The Jim Pattison Auto Group held its annual management conference in June. In addition to crunching the numbers and sitting in meetings, they also took the time to do some fun team-building activities and celebrate the success of our year so far.

“I used to drive a RAV 4, which I loved. But I was starting to think about driving a hybrid, a bit more environmentally friendly. So I researched all the hybrids and electrics out there, and decided Prius V looked like the right one. Other people have had Prius' since they first came out and now it was my turn. I kept thinking I would go see about it in the fall. But then I got an email from Toyota saying they would like to talk to me about buying back my Rav 4. Apparently, they are in high demand. So I responded by email. Within 5 minutes of sending that email, Colin Gawreletz of Pattison Toyota in Victoria called to chat with me. I told him what I was looking for and they had the exact car in their showroom. It seemed like fate. So I went in and traded the RAV 4 for the Prius V. Since I live on an island, the ferry is always an issue. Colin assured me he would get me in and out in under 4 hours. We didn't quite make that - it took 4 hours - to a test drive and see the features, work out the lease agreement and get it insured. Colin was a delight - answering every question. Everyone else who worked with me that day was great, too - the finance man, the ICBC woman (I know, she doesn't work for Toyota, but still...), the receptionist. Great service. Oh, and I made the 3pm ferry - with some time to shop before I left. All in all, a good day. Thanks, Colin!”

“What an unreal experience. Mona and Jason took excellent care of me. They didn’t try and swindle me to get me in a car. They listened to my needs and worked with me to get me what I wanted on my terms. When the original plan didn’t work out (because I had trouble selling my current car) they bent over backwards to take the car in trade and still get me the deal I needed. There was never any pressure, and the other people I interacted with on my visits were very friendly and helpful. I look forward to returning to Frontier Subaru for my service, and will recommend them any time someone I know is looking for a new car. I work in customer service and they exceed expectations. “This review is in relation the the JP Hyundai Service Department. We purchased an OEM Advent radio/GPS system with a back-up camera in December 2013 for our 2010 Santa Fe. The unit was very expensive and was installed off-site by an independent company. This turned out to be an epic journey to get the product to perform as advertised. The unit was wired incorrectly at the initial installation and things went downhill from there. The vehicle made numerous trips to the independent installer, who were unable to get the unit to function properly and tried to provide another brand of unit in the place of the Advent brand. We had chosen the original unit as it looks like an original Hyundai product. After the third unit was installed by the independent dealer, with no success, the Service Manager got involved and all work was then done at the dealership. He was instrumental in getting one of his technicians to figure out the wiring problems (AM reception poor and no backlights working in the unit) and after many months of trying various solutions, the unit is finally functioning as advertised. I would not recommend this brand, but the former and recently appointed Service Managers worked extremely hard to ensure I was a satisfied customer. There were side issues relating to the unit being removed and installed so many times and they ensured that any items requiring repair (scratches to dash, console light not working and back seat panel required replacement) were fixed to my satisfaction.I have always found the servce department to be very good at addressing any warranty items and having the parts replaced in a timely fashion.”

Even though I may not look like a typical Volvo buyer, they took me seriously from my very first question and treated me well and fairly though the whole process. I went for several test drives before deciding that the V60 Drive-E was the car that would fit my needs. They also suggested I take the car home to ensure it would fit in my garage etc. The manager is also very approachable for any question or concern (pre or post purchase).
