Getting Lemons from Lemonade:

Urinary Tract Infection Data at BC Children’s Hospital

• Literature Review – predominantly CAUTI and adult based.

• CDC definition – 3 types of Symptomatic UTIs:• Catheter Associate UTI (CAUTI)

• Hospital Acquired UTI (HAUTI)

• Community Acquired UTI (ComUTI)

• NSQIP-P only provides an overall UTI rate.• We wanted the lemons back from the

NSQIP lemonade!

1. Determine the type of UTIs occurring in BCCH.

2. Determine pediatric specific variables related to UTI development.

3. Create a comparison database of cases.

• Reviewed literature further.

• Consulted with Surgeon Champions.

• Developed a variable abstraction form.

• Re-abstracted all UTI occurrences from 2011 and 2012.

• Abstracted all included NSQIP cases starting from January 2012 with additional comparison variables.

• Utilizing the comparison data base and UTI occurrence data, we completed a case control study.

• Results of this are still being analyzed.• We anticipate being able to do a similar

study for SSIs in future.

• Our overall goal is: To decrease the post-operative incidence of UTIs

to a occurrence rate of 1% as measured by Pediatric NSQIP samples within 1 year.
