Intro to Typography 1609QCA AT3

I chose to re-design the Fallen novels by Lauren Kate because I found this book to be a really good read. The original covers are really quite nice, however I just thought it would be interesting to see what I sort of cover I could create. The novels are about

angles and dark romance, I wanted to convey those themes through my designs, keeping up with the gothic colour scheme and imagery.

Fallen

The first book of the series is called fallen, and I wanted to convey the gothic themes as

well as suggest romance when I designed the title. I hand drew

the title and then created a vector and complimented it

with the smoke imagery in the background which when

opened up looks likes wings, referencing the angels in the

novels.

Torment

!   Torment is the second book of the series, which I have not read as of yet. To

go along with the title I photographed barbed wire

and duplicated and manipulated the image in Photoshop. I then arrange

the images to create the word ‘Torment’. The

background is also the smoke which resembles the angels in the novels.

Passion

!   Passion is the third book of the series and has strong

themes of romance throughout. I tried to

convey this by using pinks to contrast against the dark background colour and I also used flowing letter

forms. I drew the typography out and then cut around the letters. I then photographed the

arrangement of letters and manipulated it in

Photoshop.

TORMENT

Lucinda is sure that she and Daniel

are meant to be together forever. Now

they are forced apart in a desperate

bid to save Luce from the Outcasts–

immortals who want her dead. As she

discovers more about her past lives,

Luce starts to suspect that Daniel is

hiding something.

What if he has lied to her about their

shared past?

What if Luce is really meant to be

with someone else?

but sometimes it pays to just have a little faith.”

Luce would die for Daniel. And she has. Over and over again. Throughout time, Luce and

Daniel have found each other, only to be painfully torn apart: Luce dead, Daniel left

broken and alone. But perhaps it doesn’t need to be that way . . . Luce is certain that something

– or someone – in a past life can help her in her present one. So she begins the most important

who can curse your name.”

Passion

!   Besides the titles, I tried to keep the rest of the designs minimalistic and clean. I created a new symbol to distinguish Lauren Kate’s books, which is the feather you see on both the front and backs of the books. I also just used a traditional blurb and a barcode to finish the back of the

books.

!   Overall I wanted to convey the themes of dark romance and forbidden love, along with the concept of fallen angels. I believe I have achieved this with the typography I have

created, by using flowing and jagged lines. All of the books work with and against each other, with similar elements of

design across all three.
